The hydr. fluid for the shifting would indeed require cooling, operating at 3000+psi the pump alone heats the fluid a LOT this is still discounting all the other heat generated by engine, cooling system and brakes. On a simple hydr. tool circuit we figure 3 times the fluid needed to run it, a cooler is also used and the lines running to the tools 100' supply and return also help with the cooling and we do not have to worry about wt. and space |

I'm not an engineer, but I could imagine that the hydraulic fluids used for the gear changes heat up and probably have their own cooler. That thing could be mounted anywhere on the chassis. Just my 2 rubels. |

I noticed the gills in Spain and in Austria. They were only on the right side in Spain, but on both sides in Austria. It seems to me that gills of any kind are an afterthought. Something you do to solve a problem you discovered in testing, not something you design in from a clean sheet of paper. Perhaps these gills help solve the problems that delayed the GA's debut. What hydraulic system could these gills possibly be helping cool? The only hydraulics I can think of in an F1 car are the steering, brakes, and transmission. I'm pretty sure the steering power-assist and transmission are electric, and I don't see why you'd need those gills to cool the brake fluid in those places. So what hydraulics would need to be cooled in the sidepods? |

They're part of the 2003 car, which hasn't been used before, that's why you haven't seen them. They're only on one side and according to Steve Matchett's speculation for cooling the hydraulics. |

I reviewed the Austrian Gp the other night and I noticed that on the sidepods? of the car there were GTO-type slats which look like gills. Every pic I've seen doesn't have them. Were these introduced for this race or am I imagining things? |
