Interesting. Unless I missed something, the announcers never let on to this. In the dark, or in on the ruse, I'm curious to hear more.

Jack:

The bumping would have been in that session, which was cancelled. There are all sorts of rumours running around about that issue.

Art,
I've been following this thread, hoping to stumble across the answer to what is probably a dumb question. Anyway, here goes: At what point exactly did they do this? I was watching the final day of qualifying, and from the telecast, it seemed as if there were no cars planning to attempt a run later in the day. I assume you're talking about final qualifying, the sunday before the race. Even the television announcers stated how there weren't any cars prepping. What's the scoop?

Rob:

There were 3, 4 cars ready to attempt qualification when they eliminated bumping. My understanding is that they were good cars, with a good chance of qualifying. I'll keep you posted on this, something may come of it. Maybe not, but we'll see.

The slowest car in the field of 33 is on the bubble regardless of the day it qualified.

Rob is right: the IRL couldn't fill the field, due to the economy, the CART schism, and the lack of sponsor $$$.

If keeping Sarah in the field was the motive, it would have made a lot more sense to over fill the field as happened with Lynn St James 35 cars that year

I heard they couldn't fill the field. Haven't read anything else. She brings much attention, which is good for George.

I'm not saying the rumor is false as nothing surprizes me anymore, but the last I saw Wardy on the tube he was still in hope of a ride and it did not look good. Sarah was the 2nd slowest in the field but qualfied on pole day putting her in the 8th row, don't know all the rules but would that help her from not being bumped?

I'm just glad they filled the field

Don't y'all love the 107% rule in Formula One?

There were several cars there that were faster than the back end of the field, with competent dirvers waiting to qualify, and they eliminated the bumping, you figure it out. I just reported the rumour.

If there was a faster car than the slowest one, Sarah would not have been bumped because Airton Daire (sp) was the slowest in the field

Once Sarah Fisher qualified for the race (at a relatively low speed), for some reason bumping was eliminated. There is a rumour running around the pits, that this was (it has only happened once in the past, to my understanding) done because Tony George didn't want her bumped. Standing in line for qualifying was Jeff Ward (a high finisher in the past) in a Target car, which rumour has it was every bit as good at the car on the pole.

Any comments?
