I raced shifters for years and always thought of them as really quite a lot of fun. What I liked better than shifters was 100cc direct drive Formula A karts. These are hard to come by in North America but the norm in Europe. They will lap a tight course faster than a shifter and are nice to dive because they are so light and nimble. |

MRP? I know Garry Lobaugh. They do a nice show for arrive and drive not too far from Chicago. I've done shifters there, pretty intense. |

Jumping into shifters is a pretty big bite . Depending of where you live you may have local resources that can mentor you. I have non-shifter and a shifter. I also bought my 4 year old a kadet kart so he can get a taste of driving. Good luck. |

www.ekartingnews.com is the best on line forum for karting info. A shifter is a hard kart to start racing in. I would suggest running a clutch kart. The TAG class is a entry level kart. TAG stands for "touch and go" they have electric start and are low maintence engines.

dave, a good site for beginners is the woodbridge kart club in woodbridge va. the site has lots of info and a classified for used karts. best to try to locate a local track and see what are the most popular classes in your area. a 125 shifter is beaucoup pronto dude.i,d run kt 100 to start with then move up to the 125's. if your able to travel, the mid west is full of great tracks and plenty of competition in the 125 classes. it is a very competitve class full of young hotshoes.the world karting assoc. has a good site also. as for the little woman, just take her to the track and walk around the paddocks karting people are very friendly and she'll see it as a family activity. then you'll need a RV to pull the trailer so you can make a weekend of it. good luck rc |

David: I have a 125 shifter, Honda powered. Where do you live? There are other guys on the board who also race them. |

I've tried the racing karts w/o shifters, but not the biggies. Not sure where you live, but look around for a track within driving distance. A bunch of us rented out a track in Michigan last fall and had a blast. Final tally was 8 broken bones, a bit of road rash and total exhaustion. |

As I've never driven one myself I do know something about shifters, but so do some other Fchatters who do drive them. Maybe do a little search in the archives and you'll find some info on the, check out the off topic archives for instance. If you got any specific questions, just shoot Take a look at these : http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/132929/183913.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/132929/183286.html |

I'm interesting in racing shifter karts... but it's difficult to race by yourself, and even more difficult to convince your wife you need a shifter kart when you don't know anyone w/ one or have a place for one. Does anyone have any experience with them? Thanks in advance David |
