Not sure...but I think he had brake problems late in the race. The last few laps, right before the yellow & then on th eone final green lap, it did not appear that his brake light were coming on in th ebraking zones. I suspect he was downshift braking, and perhaps during the cooldown lap he just wanted to get into the pits. Also, I think he was waving out of the right side of his car at the othe rdrivers, since this was his farewell race. The one he almost had contact with--I don't think that guy saw Newman coming up on his left, and just drifted right into him. But Newman was definitely going alongside other drivers & waving--I could faintly see his hand through the windshield. A classy sportsman to the end!! |

What's the deal with his warm down lap driving? Did he not know the race was over? He shot down the left side, had contact with another car and then passed several on the warm down lap up right behind Miller. It's not illegal to pass on the warm down, but usually you stay in your finishing order being sure to wave/thank all the workers. He wasn't even waiving as I could tell and then while everyone pulled into the paddock he pulled down the hot pit lane. No big deal, just curious. |

What a stud! I watched it, too. Don't forget: it was also run in persistent rain. And despite this, he started 10th, kept it together (except for one brief off & on and a brief pit to clear mud from his radiator), and finished in 5th place!!! |
