Hermann Hesse on FChat. We're getting pretty fancy here. What's next, Faust, Guenther Grass?
:-)

As close as the heroes and worshippers roles are, so close will I get with my helmet: I'll take it one of the masters in helmet design, Mike Charness from this board (he did an helmet for an Enzo owner). But in my case to make the replica even better. It is a narrow edge. Just as in life.

>Luciano, I never cared much for Hermann's writings, so I guess we won't find agreement on this one either.
>Personally I don't understand why somebody would want to wear their own helmet design when there are so
>many great heroes out there you can pay tribute too.

_Quoting_ Hesse:

"It is just the same with mothers. When they have borne their
children and given them their milk and beauty and strength,
they themselves become invisible, and no one asks about them any more."

"But that is sad," I said, without really thinking very much about it.

"I do not think it is sadder than all other things," said Leo. "Perhaps
it is sad and yet also beautiful. The law ordains that it shall be so."

"The law?" I asked curiously. "What law is that, Leo?"

"The law of service. He who wishes to live long must serve, but he
who wishes to rule does not live long."

"Then why do so many strive to rule?"

"Because they do not understand. There are few who are born to be masters;
they remain happy and healthy. But all the others who have only
become masters through endeavor, end in nothing."

ie. we are in accord. One is always paying tribute (to great, perchance invisible "heroes"),
wearing replicas as well as wearing a 'personal' design.

>Aside from that I like to get as close as possible to the real deal

Indeed. And you and Hesse are very right,
the way to do so is by paying tribute.

Greetings.

I have had a chance to hold many of these helmets and there are a few things that stand out to me:

1. Most helmets make use of flourescent (ie 'dayglow') paint for base colours or trimmings. The reason you don't see it on TV or in pictures is that the film is not colour sensitive to effect of these paints.

2. The paint on MS helmet (both when he used Bell and now with Scuberth) is nothing special. All the graphics are done in decal that is clearcoated and the trimming does leave a little to be desired.

Now this opinion is coming from a total freak when it comes to helmet paint. It is the one thing I am totally anal about and I demand my helmets to be PERFECT in every detail. The best painter around is Mike Fairholme. He is the official painter for Arai and does all the Arai helmets you see in F1. All logos are painted on and all of his paint jobs are 100% perfect from every angle. The quality of his work is amazing. Expect to start paying about $1000 and up for paint if he does it; then again when you are the best, the price is secondary.

Byron, when you look really close you discover another secret about his helmet: The horse is not painted, but a sticker. So I'm pretty close with my replica.

Just back from the race in Indianapolis & wanted to mention that I had always thought that Michael's helmet was the same red as the car from the pictures I'd seen. In real life yesterday, I can tell you that it is dayglow orange, which was a surprise. Many of the others that look green are also the dayglow green. Much more colorful than they appear on TV.

Luciano, I never cared much for Hermann's writings, so I guess we won't find agreement on this one either. Personally I don't understand why somebody would want to wear their own helmet design when there are so many great heroes out there you can pay tribute too.

Aside from that I like to get as close as possible to the real deal by chaning/improving my replica. It is a challenge. Just like it was getting all the bits and pieces for the replica Schumacher racing suit.

Schuberth has more interesting/beautiful designs than the MS one.

Perplexed as to impetus for wearing replicas.
Paraphrasing Hesse: the true human profession is locating the self.

Actually I would mount both onto their respective helmets. There are very good Gilles' helmet replicas available.

Senna's and Gilles' helmets side by side. What a shrein.

BTW: In Orlando there is/was a motorsports themed 'restaurant' where they have replica (or maybe the real ones?) helmets and suits of famous drivers. I believe Mansell and Senna are there. But to top it off, they put them onto mannequins and onto pedestals. It does look cool though.

It's one of my prized pieces. I also have a signed Gilles visor from '80. Not sure if I want to helmet that one, though.

BTW: That's exactly what I did with my Irvine helmet. First I bought the signed visor, then I found the helmet, that it belongs to. Not quite a Senna, but still...

Juan--how much? I've got a signed Senna visor that would be cool to match with a helmet. It's from '88.

Juan, your helmets are absolutely incredible. Finally somebody has the good sense to offer Senna's helmet in full size at an affordable price.
I'm not in the market, but I will certainly pass the word on.

Yeah Anthony, but I hate the non tobacco look. After all it is the Marlboro-Ferrari team and not the white-blob-Ferrari team. Anyway.

Planning on doing something blasphemous with it: Take it (along with Schumacher replica racing suit) to an oval for some good ol' US oval "racing". Hehe. Headlines: "Is MS planning on retiring in the IRL? He was spotted at the Joliet Speedway doing practice laps in an Indy car."

...just wait and see.
:-)

Jay, hope you find the $$$. Good luck!

Andreas, I am so tempted to buy one! If my car was finished I would in a second. I'll drop you a line at the end of summer, hopefully I'll have the Dino GT4 on the road by then and I'll have some spare cash.

Anthony, will do.

BTW: Let me take that back about the missing horse:
Upload

The Schubert logo was only a sticker, which came off easily. Then I simply applied one of the transparent horsey stickers. Voila!

I still need to find all those Marlboro stickers.

BTW: I checked the manual and you can even order a red tinted mirrored visor, just like the original. Will do of course.

There is an ad in the Clasified section in this weeks Autosport:
"WANTED 2002 FULL SIZE MICHAEL SCHUMACHER REPLICA HELMET. Can't afford to pay thousands."

Andreas, if you e-mail your contacts details to me at [email protected] I'll give the guy a ring and tell him to look on here for pictures. :-)

I'm glad I posted this, because I'm learning a lot of new details now:

Obviously there are some differences when comparing it to the real deal. Need to get started on finding all those special decals.

And no, it doesn't have the prancing horse, but that might be something a friend of mine (an artist with the paintbrush) could add. It currently has the Schuberth logo.

The visor can be taken off and that's my plan for getting it signed. Thanks Anthony for the offer with Rachael, I might take you guys up on this as soon as I find a replacement visor. I actually have a lead into the Ferrari F1 team myself now, but your connection is definitely around less corners.

As I mentioned, the helmet itself is very decent and I'll be using it for 'racing'. It has some fancy built in air channels and it is fairly light. Compared to the Eddie helmet you can tell technology developed further. Eddie's helmet I had to drive always with the visor never fully closed to prevent it from fogging over.

Finally if anybody else is interested in this helmet, please let me know, I kept the biz card from my dealer. Don't know what the official price will be, it might be the same, less or more, who knows. But I'm pretty certain he could get some more. He is btw from Austria.

That price is pretty unbelievable! Are you sure they didn't miss a decimal point? I won't tell you how much my friend paid for this helmet, but he is now selling it for 45K!

"Michael won pole position in this helmet and was winning the race out-right when a cracked exhaust pipe melted a suspension strut forcing him to retire on lap 55 (78). This helmet is perhaps the most photographed of the season, as it was the first in his new race colours. It can be differentiated from his others by the black Marlboro lettering which was never, and will never be repeated. Michael has decided to use a different manufacturer for the 2001 season. The visor for this helmet is "mist resistant" and has a reflective lens which gives Michael 270 visibility without turning his head!"

A decent replica is usually over 1000. You got yourself a bargain there. Rachael can get the visor signed for you if you want. Can you buy a spare visor for 'race use' and have the signed one on it for display?

PS Does it have a prancing horse in the yellow section on the back?

For comparison I shot them together with my Irvine helmet. That one is still the nicer one from a pure F perspective with the horsey, but there is something about a Pentachampion.

Wasn't quite sure, whether this thread should be here or in Collectables, but what the heck:

I was always looking for a Schumacher 1:1 replica helmet. I know you can buy them in the States from eg. Exoticar for insane amount of about 3.5k US.

However last week at Goodwood I found a replica from Schuberth (his new helmet manufacturer) for a merely $ 500. Yes, that was a sales price and not the regular, but still. Had to go for it.

The helmet is btw top notch hi tech and of course will be used by me going forward. It only lacks the Marlboro stickers, but I'm sure over time I will find those.

Next project: Get Schumi to sign it...
