I thought it was Danny Sullivan that was doing the search.

So, is this an open casting call? If so, try and get in for the free day of bad-ass karting!

Sounds cool. Al I know is that Eddie Underacheever was doing this search thing last year for Red Bull. It was broadcast partly on Speed, but never really got anywhere or I simply lost track of it.

I love the underlying idea. Hopefully this time it will have more success/echo in the press.

'Search for the Future American Formula One Champion' Continues

*Race fans welcome to attend*

WHAT: The Red Bull Driver Search program is designed to directly address the lack of American presence at the pinnacle of motor racing: Formula One. After a successful launch in 2002, the Red Bull Driver Search has continued in 2003 and this year's objective is to add 2-4 promising young American candidates to the four who were selected last year. The four winners from 2002 are competing this year in Europe in Formula 3000, Formula Nissan, Formula 3 and Formula Renault. The goal is to develop young American talent and one day place these drivers in Formula One. Only twice has the United States flown the winning flag at the world championship, the last by Mario Andretti in 1978.

WHEN: Tuesday, Aug. 12, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (PDT).

WHERE: Infineon Raceway Karting Center, Infineon Raceway, Highways 37 and 121, Sonoma, CA 95476. Competitors will race on the state-of-the-art 16-turn, three-quarter mile kart track.

COMPETITORS: Twenty-eight drivers will participate in the competition on Aug. 12. These drivers advanced to the test at Infineon Raceway by virtue of their performance at indoor karting events held around the country. In addition to Infineon Raceway, other tests are being held at professional outdoor kart tracks in the Northeast, South and Midwest.

FORMAT: Drivers will compete at Infineon Raceway in practice sessions, qualifying sessions and an eventual main event. The main event is tentatively set for 4:30 p.m. (PDT).

KARTS: Rotax JR Fr-125 karts provided by Red Bull.

GOAL: Twelve drivers from the outdoor kart track competitions around the country will advance to the semifinals at Sebring (Fla.) on Sept. 3-5, including three from Infineon Raceway. They will be joined by 12 other candidates who were selected by "undercover scouts." This 24-person field will be trimmed to 10 drivers, who will attend the Formula One United States Grand Prix in Indianapolis in September.

JUDGES: The judging will be led by Danny Sullivan, former American Formula One driver for Tyrell-Ford, 1985 Indy 500 champion and 1998 CART champion. Sullivan will be available for interviews.

LOCALS: Tad Funakushi (Galt); Nick Green (San Jose); Wesley Boswell (Alameda); AJ Pifferni (Santa Cruz); and Benny Moon (Shingle Springs).
