Well, it all depends what they specifiy as amateur. Are we talking about any Joe Blow, or do you have to have a certain race car experience. |

Yes Jameel, that's as maybe, but they will be wanting applicants of a certain standard if this is not to descend into outright farce..;) |

It doesnt make sense to me to do this in the U.K. It should be done in the US. Theres already enough fan support in Europe for F1. If you hold the contest in North America it will increase the fan base and possibly bring more American sponsors on board. |

Planet-F1 only quoted scant bits of the full article, so here's the Full Guardian Article http://media.guardian.co.uk/marketingandpr/story/0,7494,1049292,00.html, Method to the madness: The concept has been devised by Jordan and SlaterHerd, a sports marketing company formed by former magazine publisher Victoria Herd and former formula one team owner and rally driver Robin Herd, and is set to hit television screens in the UK next year. |

Any publicity is good publicity. As even Senna's death proved. Besides I like contest where street people get a fighting chance. Probably for nil, but at least a try. However it is doubtful, that this deal will even come true: For years there was talk about a Survivor show in Russia, where the winner would be taken to the space station. Great concept, but not enough money came together. OTOH driving a Jordan shouldn't cost that much. Another reason why this is probably just gonna fizzle: Remember the hoopla about the Red Bull search for the new American F1 driver? Big announcements on Speedvision and in Racer and then it all flopped. I believe they're still doing the search, but so far nobody has really stepped into a F1 cockpit. |

Apparently the JORDAN team will be having an American Idol type competition to see who drives in an F1 race in 2007. This show is supposed to start airing some time next year. Does anybody know more detailed info about the contest? This is all being done to help improve F1 T.V. ratings and bring more money to the, cash, strapped Jordan team. I don't like any of those stupid reality shows, but I would definitely watch this one, if not participate in it. So what do you think, is this good or bad for F1's image? |
