It's a worthwhile question. I didn't understand the rules either in the first couple of years. I thought, that West wasn't sold in the US hence they were allowed to advertise, but that wasn't the reason. The whole thing is pretty silly IMHO.

Benson and Hedges is part of the BAT brands, along with Lucky Strike. I assume BAT has sponsored another sport using one of it's other brands, so they can't show their logos on Jordan and BAR.

Mild Seven is a brand from Japan Tobacco and West is some German brand or something. Like Andreas mentioned, both these two brands aren't sponsoring anything in the US, so their logos can be shown.

BTW, I think this question pops up almost annually, someone should make it a sticky or something.

Andreas, I understand. Thanks. I guess Benson & Hedges must be sponsoring something else too and that's why they had to run their usual logo.

If you have a tape of the race, take a look at the rear wing on Michael's car. It looks as if the Marlboro logo was poorly covered up. I understand that they use decals, but the way the black letters "bleeds" through is odd.

Andy, the tobacco laws in the US restrict the brand to use only one sport series. Marlboro is already supporting IRL. That's why they cannot show the logo on the F1 cars. Weird, I know. West is not sponsoring anything else here, so they can show their logo for F1.

Logos are ultra thin decals that are put on the car, not painted. Maybe the white blobs are decals as well and in this case maybe the rear wing was painted and the thin decal used to cover it up.

I noticed Ferrari wasn't running "Marlboro" on their cars or drivers' suits and Jordan was running their "Be On Edge" logo. But Mild Seven was prominent on the Renaults and West was run on the McLarens. Is the tobacco law in the US specific to brands that are sold here only?

Also, did anyone else notice the faint indications of "Marlboro" under the white paint on the Ferraris' rear wing? What's up with that? Is this a strategy to hint at the logo without actually printing it? Or was there only one can of white paint on the shelf at the Speedway K-Mart?
