Quote from Nuvolari it always amuses me of how fans loose perspective I think you meant "lose", not "loose" - a common mistake made by many. |

Jordan I hope you're joking about buying FIAT shares. That would surely set your Ferrari fund back in direct proportion to the dollars put in. |

Tazio, lighten up dude. It is fitting to say "WE" won because "WE" bought the Ferrari shirts, caps , and like you said, the lucky few,the actual cars themselves. Each one of those dollars spent on posters, etc.etc finds their way to the racing effort. I for one have been a fan since I was a kid, regardless of whether or not they were wining.

I actually own shares in FIAT, thus when I say "we" won, I mean it. |

"I think I enjoyed pulling for Ferrari more when they were struggling" I always sort of liked the Berger/Alesi pairing. |

It's not the fans who claim "we won" with whom I have a problem. It's the members of that same crowd who immediately proclaim "they lost" during times of failure. If you are going to consider yourself a "we", then it should be through thick and thin. I think I enjoyed pulling for Ferrari more when they were struggling--what can I say, I'm a Cubs fan. During their dominance I've switched to pulling for individual drivers, ala the medieval reference. |

I think (I am a ___ participant th/r/ough spectating), therefore I am (a participant in the spectacle). The id is not completely self-contained. Sometimes that which is separate from ourselves becomes part and parcel of our identity. I think the definition of the word "vicarious" neatly sums up this part of ourselves. |

>>I see the feather ruffling has begun << don't think so, but the irony of your user name, and your question, are imiscable. don't you think? personally, i don't think "ive" won with ferrari, but that's just me. sports, unless your a player/owner/coach/member of the teams is an excercise in avid spectating, and vicarious fullfilment (like the internet), and as such , people like to lay claim to something they "feel" that they're part of. nothing wrong with it, but congnitivly it may be hard to dissociate the subconcious idea of "being there" v. "seeing it." anyway, what i find even more comical (in a macabre way) is all the sports fans you see who are 300+ lbs. , watching football, baseball, etc yelling and screaming about an athletes performance while on the mobile to order another extra large sausage pizza, and have never lifted a weight, ran a yard or gotten hit. that, i think it's funny ,and translates well to race fans who enjoy "talking it up." personally, i only watch the f1 airings, and aside from that, don't watch much tv let alone sports, so i don't think i've got the time to associate my likeness with a vicarious entity. yay. oh, and if i have a track event the weekend of a race, boo hoo, i'd rather be out driving. i must be a psuedo-fan. |

Is your name really Tazio Nuvolari? If not, aren't you "attaching" yourself to something/someone without really being a part of it? Hey, it doesn't bother me at all, just seems ambiguous..... |

WE WON is appropriate as far as I am concerned because the team I chose to support/follow won thus I won too (because I chose the right team). Thus the same as backing the right horse ... Pete |

While it is true, that the Ferrari team would have won with or without my (and others) support, it is just a lot more fun to pick a side. I remember once sitting in the grand stands of Monza with fans in red on my left side and fans in silver on my right. It was the battle Hakkinen vs MS. Needless to say I kept my mouth shut. But what is sports without picking a side? A rather dulldrum contest IMHO. F1 to me (and to Derek Daily from whom I borrowed this idea) is like the old jousting tournaments in medieval times: You pick your knight in shiming armor (the comparison with helmets and helmets design works too) and root for him in the tournament. What's the point of watching F1 without picking your favourite? |

As an avid fan of sports I have often wondered why people refer to their favorite sports teams possessivly? With regrards to motor racing, why do you read and see all these Ferrari fans for instance proclaiming that 'WE WON' at the end of this season. Even if you are among the lucky few who own a Ferrari, you still only watched it happen. Some may argue that by owning a Ferrari, you have supported the team but if this is true where do you draw the line? If I buy a Hugo Boss shirt can I clam victory for Mclaren or cheer on Williams if I have an HP printer on my desk. The point I am trying to make is that it always amuses me of how fans loose perspective and talk of the team as being their own. While it might be in spirit I think it is a much more fitting tribute to proclaim that 'They won' and that 'I' was able to watch it. Well that is my rant for the day, I'm sure it will ruffle some feathers. |
