Good question. A previous owner put them on and I don't know why. I kinda like them now, I use them as DTL.

fyi, the PCA (porche club of america) events typically require you to be a member. it is rare, but not out of the ordinary, to have a few empty slots open for others. to become a member of the PCA just like the F-clubs, you are required to supply a VIN - some have bought rusted out junkers to use the VIN (I know of two) and raced other cars out at PCA events.

But get out there, no matter what you are driving and learn learn learn. =)

also if you need a helmet, I can give you a great deal on Bieffe's, actually anyone out there. I dont mean to advertise, but just an offer. Just let me know.

Bret, check out the schedule for your local track and then contact the regional Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, etc. clubs that plan on attending. Just because it may be a Porsche event doesn't mean you can't sign up and bring your Ferrari. Like Rob mentioned, most clubs & tracks require a helmet and an on-board fire extinguisher. These clubs usually have 4-5 groupings based on experience. Usually an event is Saturday and Sunday and you normally get at least four 25-30 minute sessions in per day. Over a weekend, that's close to 4 hours of track time.

Hope you have fun!

This is a very good start. Thanks. I'll print it out and bring it to the old man's attention. He'll probably make me do some work or something for him to fund me in any of these things, but I think it would be well worth it.

Sorry Bret, I haven't had time to respond yet.

Here are some options...

Autocross - Cheap ($25) and only require drivers license and a helmet (they usually have loaners). Race the clock like the below picture, not as fun as track events, but still a blast and very competitive. [$25 a day]

DE/Track Events - Held with organizations like SCCA, NASA, PCA, and FCA. Safety is usually M or SA 1995 Helmet or better, then sometimes you need a fire extinguisher on board. They put you in groups based on experience and usually you can go as fast as you can. Different rules about how and when to pass. [$225 a weekend]

Competitive Driving School - Like the Skip Barber. Expensive as heck, but they teach you how to be a race driver. After 3-day school you'll have your competitive racing license. An alternative is the SCCA or NASA schools, which cost only a few hundred dollars, but you provide your own race car. [$2,500 for pro school, $400 for SCCA school]

Club Racing - Through SCCA and NASA. Requirements would be competition license, driving suit, gloves, shoes, nomex socks/underwear, SA1995 helmet or better, race car, legal roll cage, fire system, racing seat, racing harness, window net, cut off switch, and a few other little things. Now you're talking door to door racing. This is what I do in my 1st gen Rx7 race car. [$7,000 to $100,000+ a year]

Let me know if specific questions.

Yeah that would be great. Do they have these things regularly at large tracks (the closest to me is Lime Rock)? It would be a great way to start. I already started planting the seed about driving classes in my dad. We were watching American Le Mans this weekend and a Skip Barber commercial came on, "I bet you learn an awful lot about driving in those classes, they have a racing and a street one from what I hear." His answer was "Oh yeah, you'd learn a ton, look into em." My diabolical plan has begun.

Bret, you can always show up to a DE (driver education) event and run your car and it will only run a few hundred + a few shreds of tires and brake pads. I highly recommend it. not timed, controlled passing and instructors in car with you (for certain classes). requirement - helmet & car.

nice pic Rob! I love the sight of an F-car being raced.

Yeah true. Soon I hope to start tracking, not autocrossing I guess, my 308. I think next summer. I gotta con the old man into putting me through one of those racing schools. What's involved in tracking a car (ie personal safety equipment, car set up, etc)?
