FORMULA 1 Mugello Test, Day 4 Records Continue to Tumble Mugello, Italy, Feb. 19 The track record at Mugello has taken quite a pounding over the past few days, with the standard being raised daily. Monday was no different, as Ferrari continued with the fourth day of a six-day test, as Rubens Barrichello smashed it once again. Barrichello, who drove the newest F2001 in the morning before handing off to Michael Schumacher, completed 43 laps with a best of 1:22.139, obliterating the 1:23.350 set by Saubers Nick Heidfeld on Sunday, which in turn had bested the 1:23.780 set by Schumacher on Saturday. This was the last test for Barrichello prior to the season opener in Melbourne on March 4. Asked about the days performance, he said, "My lap time? I am not surprised, but I am certainly happy with the work we have done so far." Schumacher took over in the afternoon, logging another 19 laps with a best of 1:22.923, a stunning time in itself. "Today's times confirm that the car is very quick," the World Champion said. "Right from the start, I have had a positive feeling about the car, and that continues to be the case with every day that passes." Schumacher will continue testing at Mugello tomorrow. Testing times, Mugello, Feb. 19: 1) Rubens Barrichello, Ferrari F2001/Bridgestone, 1:22.139 2) Michael Schumacher, Ferrari F2001/Bridgestone, 1:22.923 John Gardner, News Bureau Editor, RACER and Champ Car |
