Bah!!! So much promise! Well, at least they know what to beef up for next year. Then again, this is a great show by Prodrive!

7.5 hours in, the Prodrive 550 has lead the GTS class the entire way. The vettes are still close, but they just pitted and are now 2 laps down.

Yes! I honestly wish that the 550's sweep Le Mans this year. Don't get me wrong the c5r's are brilliant cars, but the 550, get's my backing!

There are 4 Ferraris in this years Le Mans 24 hours. The 550 in GTS and three 360's in GT. The best shot will be the 550 as it's the top qualifier. The 360's are up against the tough GT3's.

Ferrari 550 from Prodrive leads first two qualifying sessions at Le Mans in the GTS class over the Vettes and Vipers

Audis Take Command in Second Le Mans Qualifying

After Jan Lammers set the pace in this afternoons opening qualifying session for this weekends 24 Hours of Le Mans with his Judd-powered Dome, it was back to reality in the second session this evening as Audi Sport Team Joest moved back to the top of the time sheetsalthough certainly not for lack of trying by the flying Dutchman.

Rinaldo Capello, driving the No. 2 entry he shares with Johnny Herbert and Christian Pescatori, eclipsed Lammers first session time eight minutes in, with a lap at 3m30.347sec after eight minutes of the two-hour session to knock Jan Lammers off the top spot. The Racing for Holland Dome team lost another place moments later when when Tom Kristensen's R8 jumped up to second, giving Audi a one-two.

Lammers continued to impress, however, improving his own best time to 3:31.057. Still, he remained third overall.

With most teams planning to concentrate on race setup in tomorrow night's two sessions, Capellos hot lap this evening may have secured the pole for the Italian driver.

Behind these three was a hotly contested group. Olivier Beretta was the first to make his move in the ORECA Dallara, but a couple of moments later Mark Blundell and his MG-Lola pushed him back to fifth. However, Blundell then clipped a Porsche GT car through the new Tetre Rouge esses at an estimated speed of over 135mph. The car hit the barriers and suffered a broken steering arm.

That opened the door for Michael Krumm to nail down the fourth spot in the s Audi R8 beat his time to knock the leading LMP 675 car off the second row. With the second MG missing the session after Johnny Kane blew an engine in the first qualifying period, it completed a tough day for the British marque.

Max Angelelli gave Cadillac something to cheer about, managing a time around five seconds faster than the marque achieved in the Le Mans test day last month en route to eighth overall, one place ahead of the latest entrant from Le Mans-based manufacturer Courage.

Bentley had a disappointing session, placing 10th overall, and the lone EXP Speed 8 entry suffered a minor fender-banging incident in which Andy Wallace was taken off by a slower car as he approached Indianapolis corner at full speed. Fortunately, the car was not seriously damaged.

In the GTS class, Corvette driver Oliver Gavin dueled with Alain Menu's Prodrive Ferrarieasily quickest in the first sessionfor the fastest time this evening. Menu again came out on top, although the American cars appear to be closing the gap.
