jordan,

to make myself more clear, electronics can become expensive but not always a problem. valve adjustments and all involved in a major service is big money. the suspension (hydrulics on the rear)and general wear are also very costly. if it were not for the high maint. costs, a 400 would be a daily driver for me. i love a big comfy car!!!

Hey thanks for the advice on the 400! I didn't know about its electrical problems. I guess the guys at the dealership forgot to mention them *hmm...* :-)

Im learning new stuff here already!

Jordan,
I've been looking at 400's due to its V-12 front
engine and over 300 hp... since you are here in California, it would be hard to find a car
that would pass smog... ALL the 400s are gray market cars and most didn't have cats. If you find
one that is smogable and CA legal IMO it is a great car to have... less maintenance than the 308 series cars due to its chain driven not belt.
It is not as nimble through the curves as the 308s and it is more of a grand touring car.

Peter,

Sounds great. I love opening up the boxer.

Jordan,

I agree with Peter on the 400. It is a nice looking car but parts and maintenance are really high. IF you are looking at a carb 400. Forget it. Emmission laws in Cal will make it impossible to make it pass. Get a 308 or a 328 if you have the funds. My 308 is a carb and was dicey to pass but it is possible. Peter's is an injected model which is pretty much an non-issue for emmissions. 400's were also NOT originally sold in the US. they were imported just like the 512 BB's They had to be converted to US spec's. You need the DOT, EPA and in some instances, a BAR approval for the car. California is not 400 or 512 Friendly that is for sure.

jordan,

for a first ferrari, you may want to stay away from a 400, as they can break your spirits in a hurry...very complex electronics and costly to maintain. the 308 must be the best value in a sports car , ferrari or other.like matt, i have a 512 bbi and a 308 gtb qv. i just love the 308 and if you look hard enough (look at many cars before falling in love) you can find an awesome carb (the best) for great money. they are spectacular to drive and look at!!! ask matt about the e.p.a. issues on carb cars.

hey matt, i will be moved to san diego on jan 1...lets go for a rip in the bb's!!

Hey guys, I live in Irvine,CA and I have been a Ferrari enthusiast since I was 5. Im planning on buying a 308 or 400 in a few years so I would love input on those models or similar.

Its great to find this forum since no one I know has the same love for Ferrari's as me! If anyone in the area wants to meet up with me sometime, just e-mail me and let me know! I love to take pictures of Ferrari's but Im having trouble finding subjects...the coolest thing in my neighborhood is a Z3 :-)
