Id Say on average I drive the Lusso two or three times a week. Sometimes just to the grocery store, or sometimes on a two or three hour cruse. The longest trip was the trip to the "Best of France & Italy" in the San Fernando Valley, probably five or more hours of drive time. This is why I am excited about this group and the once a month drives. As far as a ride, you bet.

Steve, glad to hear your car is going to be driven. If you ever plan to participate in any other events up this way, let me know. I'd love to get a better look (and maybe a ride?). |

Hey Group, on the main board on the "ferraris on the street" there is a post by Red that shows links to pictures of Auto Exotica (spelling) It looked like a fun picnic. Does anyone know who the group is or how to get affiliated? Thanks all |

Wayne, youve got a good memory. The wheels (rust in the centers) and the paint are definitely the weak points on the car. The good news is the wheels you saw are loaners so I can drive the car. I have five nos centers being relaced with stainless spokes and refurbished rims even as we speak. Yes there is a hole in the rear quarter where some bonehead mounted an antenna. I cant imagine putting a radio in this car, at highway speeds the din is such that a radio would need to be at ear bleed levels. Enzo placed the most beautiful twelve cylinder music box in the car as standard equipment, why try to drown it out. Needlessly to say the hole will be welded up prior to painting. The paint is the other area to be dealt with. The body is pretty straight, there are a couple of spots where the trained eye can see where some previous work done on the car. My paint guy pointed them out to me, I didnt find them on my own. The paint that is on the car now is lacquer and was not sprayed properly so there are two large areas where the paint has checked on the roof and hood. I have decided to do an economical paint job (if there is such a thing) at this point in time. The only places that will be taken down to bare metal are the roof and hood to get rid of the current paint flaws. This will get the car to a very presentable driver level. I dont want to do a full concours restoration. I would be afraid to drive the thing, and that is why I have it. As for color, I am trying to figure out that one now. I agree that bright red is out. I think the reason so many Lussos are painted silver is that silver shows the lines of the car better than any other color, but I agree that there are too many in silver. I may go with a silver/blue or Mercedes has a new medium blue they are using on the new sl class called Aegean blue which I think would look great on the Lusso. But I want to look at the period colors before I make a final decision. So to answer your question I am going for a nice driver. The interior is great except for a wrinkle in the leather on the dash which bugs me. The engine compartment is detailed nicely and shows very well. So with paint and wheels I should have a very respectable car.

Steve, if I remember correctly, it seemed that your car was in need of quite a bit of cosmetic "refreshening" (paint, chrome, wheels, etc.) and doesn't it have a hole in the bodywork somewhere (rear fender?) that was possibly the result of a radio antenna having been installed and later romoved? Besides paint, how far are you planning to go as far as restoration? I'm just curious. By the way, I'm in no way intending to put your car down. I pretty much just say what I'm thinking most of the time but I just realized that my description of your car might sound insulting. That wasn't my intention. Anyway, back to my point. I'm curious whether you mean to completely restore it or bring it up to "nice driver" condition and just enjoy it. As far as colors, I don't know of any specific resource for all of the colors available in that era but I'm curious as well so give me a little time and I'll see what I can come up with. i agree, though, that the color doesn't compliment the design very well. I'm not sure if it's the darkness, though, because Lussos are gorgeous in black. Anyway, whatever color you choose, please don't paint it silver (too common) or bright red (worst color for a lusso, IMO). |

Wayne, that was me. It seems that there are a lot of classic Ferraris coming out of Japan now, and have been for some time. Lots of cars went to Japan in the late eighties. In fact the robust Japanese economy of that time was a major factor in producing the bubble in the vintage car market, especially Ferrari. When I was searching for my car (Jan thru July, 2002) I ran across about a dozen cars that were either in Japan or recently imported from there. My car was a European delivered car but ended up in California about 1973 and stayed here until around 88 when it went to Kobe Japan. Its nice to have it back in the US, and back on the road, it has apparently covered less than 3000km since 1988. The color is rare but not original to my car, I think it was originally burgundy. I am trying to find a source of colors that were available in 1963, any leads would be appreciated.

Steve, that is truly a rare color. I saw an identical Lusso (same color/condition) at this past "Best of France & Italy" gathering here in the San Fernando Valley. I believe the owner said he had purchased the car from Japan. That wasn't you was it? |

Glad you like the Lusso. The color is purple; Ferrari calls it aubergine (eggplant). Unfortunately the paint is the weak area of the car, it is lacquer and was not sprayed correctly and there are a couple of areas on the car where the paint has checked and it is quite distracting. Even more unfortunate is the fact that I was rear ended in a parking lot around Christmas. The damage is very minor but color matching will be problematic. I am going to have the car resprayed soon and am now trying to choose a color. I will probably not go with the current color, its too dark and does not show the beautiful lines of the car well. I am planning to make the Ortega run, have not talked to the FCA folks yet. So hopefully will meet some of you there.

Steve, welcome to Ferrari Chat... That is a beautiful Lusso. Exquisite. A good number of us go out on drives all the time, usually on sundays. We are trying to spread out the drives from Ventura all the way south to San Diego. The emails are usually sent out to all that are on the So Cal Contact List: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/167223/186853.html?1042500637 Are you going to the Ortega drive on 2/23? If so, I look forward to meeting you and seeing your car in person! Soon after that event, we plan to have a go-karting event in March and some possible track events as well. |

I just joined FerrariChat and look forward to conversing with many of you in the SoCal area. I purchased a 1963 Lusso last summer and have had a blast with it so far. I am a member of both FOC and FCA and have enjoyed events with both but wish there were more driving events. Looking through the FerrariChat web site I was pleasantly surprised to see that you guys try and have at least one driving event per month. I live in the San Diego area and would like to join some of the events that are not too far from home. |

Bill, welcome to Ferrari Chat. It's always good to have some seasoned Ferrari Owners here on the board! A bunch of us get together all the time for weekend drives, usually on sundays. Hopefully, you'll get your engine in your very soon - so that you may join us on one of our outings! By the way, I know this is very short notice, but for those of you that are interested... I am going on a drive to Ortega this Saturday with members of the NSX Prime community (just a primer for the 2/23 FCA Event...hehe). There will be some 20+ NSX's there and they are very welcoming of FCars. For those that are near (or are crazy enough to drive down to OC early Sat), some of us will be meeting in Irvine at 8:00am on Saturday and drive down to meet the rest of the group off Ortega Hwy. The drive will take us to Lake Elsinore with some of the group continuing on to Calabasas and some turning back after lunch. I plan to drive on to San Diego, as I was heading that direction anyways... (just with an Ortega detour!!) Let me know if you want to go and I will RSVP for you and give you additional meeting details. B. |

Hello, all...I'm new to this board, but not Ferrari. My wife and I have been on the last 3 Ortega Runs, and had a good time. Terrific food at the Thornton Winery! I love to go on weekend drives...as soon as I get my engine back into my car, I'll be ready to go anytime! Low-key Sunday morning runs (to keep her feeling good) are my favorite...no big deal, just some fun driving, and perhaps a light meal(if there's a secure place for the cars) By the way, the Palm Springs Concours is a really nice two day run...also a chance to show-off the cars. |

FCA - I called Tom Brockmiller, the event chair. I believe it is open to members and non-members... he was very welcoming about having us go out for the drive with them If you call him, he will fax you a form to fill out (and return) - that is, if you plan on having lunch with the rest of the group. Otherwise, you can choose to just do the drive and have lunch on your own. |

Ron, It's no infringement whatsoever. I failed to realize the significance of that "special day" on 1/26!! If you would like to set up a day like that at your house, I have absolutely no problem with that. With the big screen, it's probably not a bad idea at all!! Well, I'll be in Dallas until 1/25, so I guess that means I'll just have to take an evening flight back to be at your place on sunday. Besides... there's always time later in the spring or early summer for BBQ parties at my place! Your call, guys. B. |

Here's another idea, although I do not want to interfere with plans for a ride to OC and possible BBQ at Byron's. But since 1/26 is a special day.... How about a ride on the morning of 1/26 then a Super Bowl party? I will be happy to have it at my house. The back "yard" is really set up for entertaining. We could have a drive then BBQ. Wives & family would be welcome. We have a big BBQ area and pool/spa. Too cold for the pool but the spa would be nice. Big screen tv, lots of room in the house...or the same thing at Byron's as mentioned below if that day works out for him and he would want to do it. A Super Bowl Bonanza...? Let me know what you think. |

We can do sort of a 3 part day, for those interested: 1) For those coming down from LA, I hear talks of a banzai run - a Long Beach/PCH run first thing in the morning?? 2) Then meet in Irvine for the local Orange County drive... Irvine to Newport to Laguna type of thing... (tbd) 3) Then come back to my place for an afternoon BBQ with food, drinks, karaoke, and good company I'll start a new thread if there is some interest and this date looks good. |

Byron, I like the BBQ idea. BTW, it's all about the food. JL - ortega Highway starts in San Juan Cap and goes to Lake Elsinor.

If you would like to meet the 25th or 26th I'm in As for the Ortega Run, Can you guys give more info as to where Ortega hwy is, and what the drive consists of? I am hopping to have my car serviced the beggining of Feburary (Major) hopefully it will be done by then, it sounds fun. |

Haha... too funny, Matt! Me neither, to tell you the truth. I know a great place, Chez Mikkie D's, down the way over there... hehe... either way. It's more about the drive and the company than the food anyhow. We can always do this... do the drive... then come back to my place and have a BBQ... how's that? As people come by in the morning, just bring some food items (marinated or non-marinated)... quick drive 1-2 hours... then back for food and refreshments... why not? Some beer and karaoke'ing is always good for the soul! Or maybe a dip in the spa (for those that are aching from uncomfortable seats ;)) Any thoughts, anyone? |

Ok, how's sunday 1/19? We can meet in Irvine and have a leisurely drive down to Newport, then over to Laguna... if it is a clear day, we can go to the "Top of the World" overlooking Laguna Canyon and then head south and have brunch/lunch in Dana Point or at the Ritz Carlton? Or, we can stay in the laguna area and have brunch at Las Brisas on Cliff Drive. Then take a leisurely drive through Laguna Canyon Road back to Irvine. Then everyone is welcome to come back to my place for some drinks/socializing. I'm open to any other ideas you may have! Byron |

Hey Gene - I was looking at this event as a good February event as well... Matt, what do you think? I know that Jean-Louis wanted to get something together in the next 2-3 weeks, but that may be a bit difficult to coordinate. What do you guys say we make the FCA-SW drive through Ortega our Feb. Drive event? Then maybe, just maybe.... Gene can set up a track day for us in March... Gene, you might try SpeedTrials - I believe that have blocked rates for Willow Springs. |

The only problem with the west side beaches or the south bay is that you would not really get a chance to open it up. The 405 is the worst, even on the weekends and the beach communities are very crowded. However, this would be a great place to just have a liesurely drive, sort of a low speed parade through some of the yuppiest areas. Then we could all converge again on a restaurant with the F cars all around. For a nice drive midway between OC and north LA we might try the road up into the Angeles Crest Hwy off of La Canada or up Azusa Blvd into the mountains. For OC we could do PCH down the coast maybe to Laguna, or over the Ortega for a really long drive. We could do Carbon Canyon off the 57 to Chino Hills or Chapman into the hills. I'm sure that Byron can come up with other suggestions. First decision to make is what is the general location for the next run. Midway is fine with me or OC, either one. I hope the timing works out for me. Mine may be in the shop for a new timing belt then. |

Alright guys, I know that we just had our last meet, but i think it would be good if we started to plan one out maybe 2-0r 3 weeks from now. I was thinking that any of the Ventura guys can stop over in west la, I live off of the 405 and wilshire and then we can drive down to the Beach and cruise the south bay or Byron can come up with an interesting drive in orange county. Lets all put in some 2 cents and figure out what works best for the majority. JLM |

I can't wait til I can join you guys, however I might need to hold off for the summer. My schoolwork load is just so rediculous! I live near Byron in Irvine, so when you guys come down to OC I might need to pop over for a few minutes |

Byron and I came up with a idea to get together once a month for a drive. It would rotate from North LA to LA to OC to even SD twice a month. Sound good? |
