Matt, I recommend a 6 point harness, since you can mount it easily to existing seat connections. A harness can be bought for $100-200, depending on the brand. For a cheap SA helment, check out racer wholesale. I purchased a SA 2000 Full face helmet from them (G-Force) for $230.00. The Alfa Club (AROSC) is a good group to run with, and relatively cheap compared to speedtrials. I think if you are going to make the effort to run on a track, it's worth it for the harness and fire extinguisher (especially on the 308's, a fire extinguisher is a great idea!). By the way, I'm STILL WAITING for my GT4. Hopefully will be finished by next saturday (sigh)... Dom |

I have installed roll bars i Ferraris but not a mondial. You can weld plates anywhere and then bolt the bar in 4 points. Takes some time but pretty easy. I installed the challenge kit in my 348 with all the rollcarge anchors etc. Simple weld in design. I have seen 2 mondials with rollbars. Look at the run groups you are going to go with some require 2 point bars some 4 point bars some 6 or 8 point cage |

BB, I see that Speed Trial USA requires a roll bar for convertibles, no exceptions. Have you ever seen a Mondial convertible with a roll bar? One of the links at their website took me to http://www.speedtrialusa.com/index1.html where they talk about a street bar. Do you know if this qualifies for the track? Do you know if it would be able to install in the Mondial? |

Look at spedtrialUSA.com. Anyone want to go out to Fontana and rip around the track on Saturday? One day is 200 and 2 days is 290.00.? I'm 90% of the way to going. I gotta wrap up a few details but if some of you are going then I can make it for sure. Those appointments I have don't really need to see me that bad do they? |

Matt, You have to have a helmet as far as I know. Racer parts wholesale and their sister co. have all the stuff about as cheap as you can get it. You can use cotton gardening gloves any close toe shoe long sleeve t-shirt and full length pants. That will run you in AROSC into groups. To go one level more to timetrial you need to mount a fire extinguisher within reach. The extinguisher can be a cheapo kiddie home depot special mounted from your front seat bolts on a metal strap. Thats the minimum. |

Billy Bob, Sounds like fun but I do not have the equipment for my cars. Are there any track events that do not need the whole setup? |

Forgot to metion for most clubs time trial needs are 5 point/cotton cloths/tech inspection/sa2000 helmet no motocycle helmets open face sa2000 o.k.. Check your run clubs but that is very common. Race groups need rollbars fire bottles etc.. |

Guys, I will do any track event. They are total fun. No Cops! I have posted to these boards several times to try and get a splinter group of Ferrariguys to run at the Alfa Romeo events. These guys are the coolest. There is no ego just fun. No posturing. No pissing contests. I even tried to start a splinter group of chat on Yahoo groups under [email protected] in an attempt to start banter about tracking these cars and having fun not sticking to originality or anything specific. But I had no takers but the group is still open. I wanted to talk about engine and car mods., event gatherings etc... Anyway the AROSC events are 2/03 streets of willow driving school, 4/03 big willow timetrial race, 6/03 button willow, 9/03 fontana, 11/03 laguna seca. Lets go have fun! PS it is cheap too. 170/weekend and 200/wk end for laguna. |

Matt- Are you asking about the helmet to just ride along, or to drive? For ride alongs I'm pretty sure you'll be ok, but for driving they, POC, may not allow the use of motorcyle helmets. All of the organizations I run w/ allow the use of motorcycle helmets for either driver/passenger. Gene, care to clarify? |

Gene- Could you please forward me the registration materials as soon as you get them; I'd like to sign up, or at lease find out if I, my car, will be eligable. Also, who tech's the cars at the POC events? Do they have marshalls that have to physically look over the car, or do you just turn in a signed form? Matt, Jean Louis & Dom- If you guys can't bring your cars to the track, I'll be more than willing to give ride alongs throughout the day; just bring your helmet. |

Matt, reconsider going to the track, I run my car stock - an auto racing helmet SA1995 or 2000 is the only thing required It is a lot safer running on the track than running the streets (Paramount Ranch or Ortega Run)- No CHP to worry about - you use the whole width of the track - and no opposite traffic - The track event is not wheel to wheel, You only pass on the main straight if you are that much faster than the car in front of you. Or you get passed only on the main straight if you are that much slower than the car behind you. Or else, just show up for a few hours to watch or ride along - its pretty fun - good driving edification - chances of hitting something is pretty low as long as you don't do something drastically wrong

Matt, The car was located in San Jose when I bought it. When I bought it, it needed 30k service, plus I decided to add electronic ignition, and stebro exhaust. I decided to get all that stuff done up there before I tried to drive the car back. But between the holidays, etc, it's been taking a LOOOONG time (We finalized the transaction at the end of Nov). Now he's having problems with the elec ignition set up. Hopefully, everything will be straightened out by next weekend so I can drive her home. Dom

Hi Byron, Currently, my 6-point is in the Alfa. I'm picking up my GT4 on Sat (I've been waiting over a month for all repairs to be done after I bought it). Wish me luck (if the mechanic calls me today and tells me it's not ready, I'm going to scream!!). I don't have a roll bar. The shoulder belts mount to the rear seatbelt mounts. I've seen lots of people do it this way, but I bet that a roll bar or roll cage would be better. It's hard to have a roll bar in a street car (My alfa is my daily driver). Supposedly, as long as the angle to the back mount is not too steep, you should be OK in the event of a crash. I plan on doing the same thing in my GT4. It too will be a street car, so I doubt I will be able to fit a roll bar. In the case of time trials, which are relatively safe, I think, the danger of a crash is small (though it does happen). The harness is there mostly to keep you in your seat. If you were to do all out racing, I definately would recommend a roll bar/cage. Dom Keeping my fingers crossed. I want my new toy tomorrow!!!

Gene, I just checked out WillowSpringsRaceway.com ... It appears that March 1 is reserved for FasTrack Riders - motorcycles. Are you sure about the POC date? The Pantera Owner's Club has the Road Course reserved on Mar1 ... does anyone have a contact there? I guess if I go... I can finally strap on my OMP harnesses and use my gate shift lock-out, eh?... Hmmm.... no extinguisher, though! DEFINITELY have to get me a roll-bar attachment for my digital video camera, too! Dom do you have a roll bar/cage in your GT4? I'm not sure if it is advisable to use harnesses for non-rollbar equipped vehicles... others may not agree, but that is what I heard.

I think a 5-point harness is a good idea. Actually, in my Alfa, I have a 6-point installed. That way, it mounts to existing Seat and Seatbelt connections, and no-drilling required. I plan to put a 6 point in my GT4, as well as a fire extinguisher (which I think is a good idea in 308 cars, from what I hear). Dom |

SA1995 or SA2000 racing helmet 2. battery is not loose - 3. taped front lights (fog lamps for us since we have pop-up lights) 4. remove all loose things in interior (mats, pens, papers, bobble heads etc.) 5. good tires optional but good to have: racing gloves racing shoes fire extiguisher

I've done time trials with the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Southern California. Good group of people. Usually have events at Willow Springs, Buttonwillow. Usually weekend events (3 practice sessions on Sat, 2 on Sun, + 5 timed runs at the end of the day). The only thing is that AROSC requires a 5-point harness and mounted fire extinguisher. I understand many other clubs don't. I think the safety equipment is a good idea though. Their website is www.arosc.org I should be picking up my GT4 on Sat, if all goes well. I definately want to continue doing time trials, though I am usually limited by availble time. If I'm lucky, I'd like to get in 3 or 4 time trials this year in the new GT4.

Would anybody like to volunteer to possibly set up a local track event for March? Gene, I know you've been talking about this for some time... do you want to take this on? Perhaps we can synchronize the Dromo1 event with a track event so that we can warm up with Karts and the following week, take our cars out onto a track? |
