Always be hesistant about ebay cars. There are some really nice ones but there are also a lot of really hazy condition ones that look immaculate in pictures. I have almost bought cars that were perfect in pictures but when seen in person close inspection revealed repaint/prior accident/scratches/dings/etc. If you consider any out of state car never base your purchase on pictures alone fly out to see the car, it is well worth the time and money especially when considering the money involved and how much it may bother you if your car shows up with a minor/major blemish.

Byron,

I can send you some pictures as well. But I don't think this site allows that. I would prefer to do it through Outlook. My e-mail is [email protected]. Please send me something and I will reply with details and pictures.

Thanks.

Matt,

Thanks for the tip. I would of course have the dealer do a point-to-point inspection but my concern was that if th car was Euro...history of maintenence may be more difficult to dig up?

I found another 2000, 5K miles, red/blk Euro, asking $120K...talking to the guy but he is a private party so that still leaves the 996 in the air...

Jimmy,

Ferrari's Speedo's are very easy to disconnect.

Check seat condition, tires, repair orders and the like to verify milage.

all ferrari's are TMU :-) seriously you can play with the miles on any of them, when purchasing you need to check records and condition to make it is consistent with the stated milage

Curious, but I just spoke with a couple of Ferrari dealers locally and they all claimed that Euro cars are classified as "TMU"...True Mileage Unknown.

Are they saying that to scare me? Or do they have a point there? Both (F of SF, and Autogallery) said that those cars may be tampered with in their odometer readings.

Thanks

Guys,

I love how supportive you all are in helping me with my Ferrari purchase. Matt, I can't say enough...

Jeff, thank you for your offer. I'll keep it in mind as things can change. However I am somewhat set on finding a 360 in the same price range as Marty's.

At 6pm this evening (5/1) I called Eric over at Ron Tonkins and it was claimed to be sold. I did tell them if it falls out (unlikely) that I would buy it. In fact I was going to tell him to send me the paper work and I was looking forward to receiving it next Tuesday. But oh well..

What I did decide is to focus on a used 360 6-Speed, prestine condition, Euro or US, 6-Speed, around low $110K ish or better. However I do prefer to go through a dealer since I do have a 996 C2 that I need to trade in.

Well...that's it for now. I literally skipped a heart beat when I thought I was going to be getting Marty's ex-car next week...

Again. Thanks to all!! I still can't say enough.

Jimmy,

I can vouch for Marty's car.

It's a great, well pampered car. You will not be disappointed. It looks great in person. I had the pleasure of driving next to it for many miles in Feb.

It's perfect.

If Tonkin is selling the car then it is Marty's old 360

I think it may be Marty's car. The dealer told me that the car was traded in on a 575M. And that the previous owner was a doctor.

Does anyone know the history of that car? And the trade in value?

Thanks

I am the original owner of a Yellow/Black 98 355GTB F1 with 6700 miles. Car is in perfect condition and never tracked. Would take 100K for it if you are interested.

Tom,

It might be Marty's. Do you know anything about his previous car? Heard he got a 575M.

I am just worried about buying a used car that could turn out to be a nightmare. Heard the maintenence cost on Ferraris could bankrupt a person.

Also not particularly fond of a tracked car or even one that has body panel replacements.

Okay,

Here's what I have found out about the car.

It is a Euro model converted and done. It has
16K miles, and has the 15K service completed.

No damage whatsoever. 1999 model with red/blk.
Only options are red calipers and challenge
grill.

In another sighting, I saw a 2000 with 7800
miles for $120K. Also Euro, but the kicker is
that this car is an F1...not sure I really want
an F1...

Thanks

Jimmy,

I agree with Byron.

After the warranty is over, Euro and US are the same.

Look for recent service, 15k done, how many onwers, etc.

Also nake sure they have the EPA/DOT papers.

If it's a F-1 transmission, See if the software is still version 1 or if it has been upgraded to v 2.

Jimmy,
There's nothing wrong with a Euro, as long as the right maintenance schedules have been followed. The only thing is that you will have to get used to the gauges in Km's instead of miles in some cases. With 20k miles, $113k seems just a hair on the steep side, to be honest. For a 1999 model with 20k miles (if the service hasn't been done yet), I would expect to pay maybe 5-7k less than that.

Make sure you get the whole story on the car... who imported it, who did the DOT/EPA conversion, why the person is selling it, etc etc... and most of all a good PPI.

If you can get it... go for the 360 over the 355... that would be awesome... totally different cars, but one is definitely in a class of its own.

Okay,

This one really deserves some attention. I have just located a Euro 360 w/ less than 20K miles (1999). Asking $113K. Claims it's flawless, but I have to check it out in person. All DOT and conversions done.

Since I do not have any experience with Ferrari's, please offer any insight you might have if this is a good deal. It was close enough in price to used 355s so I thought it was worth mentioning.

What are the downsides of a Euro model? Is it hard to figure out of it has sustained damage?

Thanks again in advanced.

Guys,

I will check all the leads. Again thanks for the info. Matt, Byron - personal thanks.

Curious, but what does a 360 6-Speed Modena run these days used? Seen some Euro models...what's the catch there? I might consider one of those as well.

Thanks.

Jimmy,

Found one:
1995 F355 Berlinetta, Red/Tan, 24k miles, 15k service done in June 2002, never tracked. Tubi Exhaust, Alpine stereo/alarm. LA Area (310 Area code). VIN# ZFFPR41A9S0102670 I believe the asking is in the neighborhood of $80-85k.

Contact Information: Martin of Cavallino Motors 305-867-7676

I bought my car from Martin - good guy... just spoke to him - give him a call and tell him I sent ya. He'll provide you with the seller's info. The site where you will find pictures of this car (and mine) is http://www.4ferrari.com (he is a sponsor of this chat board)

Hey Jimmy,
I recently purchased a 97 Berlinetta with 23k miles in perfect shape with a tubi installed for 86k there are a lot of good cars out there, and don't be afraid of a car with a few miles on it if it runs well and has service records.
Good Luck.

Guys,

Thank you very much for the insight. Should I save my time and just go straight through a Ferrari dealer? It might be more reputable that way. Besides I am looking to trade the 996 C2.

I get the feeling that I am going to pass on this fine example at $90K, unless they will come down on it. It does seem a bit much after reading what you guys are saying.

Byron - thanks for the help, though I am looking
for a Berlinetta. Had a Supra Targa and
the roof rattles a bit too much in my
opinion.

Again. Thanks in advanced.

If anyone knows of a good conditioned used F355 (with preferrably the 30K done) please let me know.

Jimmy,

Also 95's had a valve problem. Make sure that they were changed.

Also 90K is about 15k- over market for that car. Regardless of miles, .....Unless it's a spider.....then it's 15K under market and I would question it. regardless...PPI it.

as others have noted this price is a little steep especially if from a private party. Some prefer the 95 because I think they had higher hp due to OBI and not the emissions friendly OBII in the 96. That said some have had valve guide issues with the 95's and many feel they will not buy a 95 unless the valve guide issue has been fixed buy the current owner. I know other 95 owners without the valve guide issue. There area ton of 355 out their now so look and negoiate hard. As others have said, some have gotten good cars in the 70s. That may not happen for you but I don't think you should be paying 90s. Search the site- there have been a lot of 355 discussions lately

Jimmy,
I agree with Gene... for a 1995 Berlinetta (I know you're looking for one), $90k is a bit steep. Not too long ago, another FChatter bought a 97 or 98 berlinetta for $75k. The prices are coming down a bit on the F355's....

Whatever the case may be, it is vitally important that you do a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) with a reputable 3rd party independent mechanic. It is one thing to say that you've done the 30k, but only a mechanic and a good ppi will reveal what's truly "lurking" under the hood... the last thing you want to have is another $10-20k in repairs right after you pick up your car.

I can put you in touch with someone that may be able to help you locate a good GTB (it may be from out of state, but that shouldn't be a problem)

Berlinetta, GTS, or spyder?

if its a B or a GTS then its kinda pricy.

if its a spyder then at that price it has to be prestine - garage queen driven less than 800 miles per year with maintenance books and records.

Guys,

I am in the market for a used F355 and have located what I thought was a fine example.

It is a 1995 model with less than 6K miles. Although I have yet to see it in person I was told that it is in pristine condition (and the pictures I saw were pretty evident of the claims). They also mentioned that the 30K service was already performed, with no accidents or body panel replacements in the cars history.

They are asking $90K and I wanted to know if you guys had any opinions about this.

Since this will be my first F-car please let me know what to look for in particular to the F355 1995 model year.

Thanks in advanced.

Jimmy
