Ron,

Thanks, the two things that must happen before I even think about buying a ticket are pictures and a PPI. Otherwise I won't be coming out.

Their are lots of cars for sale, but I want a Red or Yellow 1977 GTB with a good service history from at least the life of the current owner. That's tougher to find than you think.

Sean, one piece of advice, since you are posting this on an open forum.... Remember there are a lot of 308's for sale all over the country. It sounds like you would be coming a long way and doing most of this long distance.

The advice is, if the owner is uncooperative or you feel any doubts about him or what he is saying, stay away from him.

There are plenty of us in So Cal who can help you out, even on short notice. Get him to send pictures also. He should be able to do that in about 5 minutes.

I hope it works out but be careful.

It's a 308GTB. My uncle is hopefully going to look at it for me on Wednesday. The owners seems like a kind of busy person and doesn't seem to have a whole lot of time to show the car.

I'm having difficulty getting him to bring it to a shop for a PPI. Not that he thinks it won't pass, he simply does not have a bunch of time to screw with it and he's been up front about this from the beginning (as in "This is a busy week for me" when I first called him Saturday. I may have to wait until next week.

Sean, if I can be any help let me know, What kind of F-Car are you looking at?
BTW anytime someone calls me GENE I know its a tlemarketer. LOL
When I was younger I got harrased a little becasue people thought it was a girls name, but as I got older the ladies really like it.

Jean - nice name. Almost named the last boy Jean-Luke but my wife decied people would call him like the name GENE! She thought Jean Alesi is cute and that it would be a good race car drivers name.

Anyway, I should have mentioned I definitly get the PPI before I fly out. If it can't be done this week, I'll fly out next weekend.

I didn't think driving w/o the plate is a problem as long as I have paperwork (title, bill of sale, etc.) but I figured I'd get more attention in a red car and get pulled over by every cop between LA and Kansas because of no plate.

Sean, I would have the PPI done before you come out to Los Angeles. I remember that I was very excited about buying a car in San Francisco, the seller said that it was a perfect car, yada yada yada. I ahd the car inspected by a mechanic but I was so excited that I wound up flying up before the mechanic was done with the PPI. Needless to say the car was a piece of cr ap. Have your PPI finished before you get on a plane, not only is it a waste of Airfare, but you also pump yourself up more and then could potnetially get let down. My 2 cents.
With regards to License tags you can drive around without a plate without a problem, and all the other things you mentioned seem to be appropriate in what you need to do the transaction.
I had a recent Oil change done at Black Horse and they did a great job and were very thorough in going over my car.
JLM send me an e-mail if you want to discuss further.

First, the car is LA and I think I might be flying out this weekend to look at, and maybe buy it.

I'm thinking about driving it back with my dad. It would be a long trip, but it would be fun and a good chance to spend some time with my dad.

In lieu of that, can anyone offer a name for a decent transport service that offers reasonable rates. I don't need the car right away and I have an uncle in LA who can store the car for me for a few weeks if necessary?

Second, I think the PPI will be done by Blackhorse Motors. Anyone delt with them? Research seems to show they are a good independent shop.

Third, I'm pretty sure I got this right, but if I drive it back, all I need is what my local DMV requires for registering a car (signed & notorized title, odometer disclosure statement, signed bill of sale - paper saying X sold to Y for $$$). Would I still need to get a temp. tag from CA since I won't have a license plate?

Thanks for your help.
