Wayne,

I would agree with Billy Bob. Your clutch and transmission are fine. It must be in the linkage. If FOC does not correct the problem, there are many other shops that can do it.

wow thanks..Billy Bob...i'm gonna print this out and give it to FOC next week...i agree that its linkage problems or a mount problem....i don't think its the tranny or clutch...its all fine unless your under acceleration...anyways my 355 was a stick and Dougs is an F1..the stick is more fun on the street and the F1 is better on the track...i don't think the F1 is as much fun on the street..since we drive our cars all the time...but its awesome on the track....this is the first major problem i've had with the car really and its got 26K on it....anyways...keep on watching the Pulpracing website...we're getting out there again so there should be a lot of stories coming up...Doug just had a baby so he's been out of commision and i bought a motorcycle...thanks...wayne

Forgot to ask Wayne...disn't you have the 355F1? If yes...why did you go back to a conventional gearbox? Problems? I suspect many with the F1.

Well lets see what the FOC rep can do. Paul is a lead technician at FOC he should be able to fix it. I would be surprised if he could not. I have some ideas for you however. First I would dump the gear oil to inspect for metal. Metal bits can jam the shift rods. Second, I would disconnect the entire shift linkage and inspect for things like a crack in the stick shift box or cracked bushings or housing that mounts the dhift cables, even a bent shifter. If they pass then I would check for secure motor/trans mounts. Then would engage the gearbox fully in 2nd gear and then place the stick in 2nd. I would then tighten all shift cable connetions in that position. Then check that you have all gears working in a static position. If that passes then start the car and run all gears and let off the clutch just to feel for gear engagment. If that passes I would test drive the car. Hopefully this is all a linkage problem. If not it is a gearbox problem. Third, I would drop the gearbox and to inspect the gears. You can have things like a broken synchro spring in second or bent shift rod. Or trapped shift rod by bad clearance between the little metal pills that slide between the shift shafts that prevent engaging 2 gears at a time. I read the Doug and Wayne stories. We have some mutual friends. You guys are a hoot! Let me know what happens. I'd love to take your gearbox apart for you. I'm not a mechanic but I have successfully rebuilt about 6 Ferrari gearboxes.

they put new cables at FOC and it didn't correct the problem....i brought it back in to FOC and he messed with the cables and then it wouldn't go into 4th...oh its a 6 speed...so he readjusted and it went back to the old problem of not going into 2nd under accelleration...its only under accelleration...which is most of the time...its a on going problem that arose 6 months ago....anybody who drives my car cannot get into 2nd gear anytime...i'm used to it so i can get it in 50% of the time.....i don't think its the trany and i don't think its the clutch...but i'm meeting with the Ferrari rep next week at FOC and the car just went out of warranty so hopefully they will take care of it for me.....any ideas ..thanks...wayne..ps will be at autocross next weekend co-driving NSX ..thanks..www.pulpracing.com

Wayne,

This a new problem or old one? You have the 6 speed not the F-1 right? Did FOC replace cables and adjust cables from the transmission first or just new cables? Does the 2nd gear work if your double clutch it?

Alan who used to work at the Auto Gallery has a lot of knowledge on the Modena tranny's, he might be able to diagnose the problem. He's opening up a shop soon, see the thread earlier this week or last in this section. If Alan's number isn't posted, I might be able to get it from Matt Lemus and get you a referral?

The others should be able to point out some others/alternative ideas.

Sunny

P.S. nice site, btw, and hope you make it to the NSX autocross.
