I was in Los Angeles for 6 days from last Monday to Saturday doing some sightseeing. The first 4 days we had awesome weather; sunny skies, very few clouds and temps in the 80's. On Thursday when at Universal Studios, I noticed a small fire starting across the valley behind Burbank; it looked fairly small and I was sure to listen out for it on the radio and on the news. At the time, I assumed it was an isolated incident. Sure enough, when I woke up Friday morning, the air seemed to be extremely smoggy. It wasn't until after I had driven to the Getty Center that an enormous smoke cloud had moved right over the L.A. basin and obscured the sun, resulting in everything being lit in an eerie orange. From the Getty Center, downtown was not visible and Century City was partially obscured. I'd say visibility was <5 miles. While having lunch there, myself and a group of strangers were asking the guy behind the food counter what had caused the weather... As the day moved on, so did the smoke cloud... partially. At around midday, I drove from the Getty Center to Long Beach to see the Queen Mary. During the journey on the freeway, I stumbled across a crashed car lying on its side, engine ablaze, in the middle of opposite traffic... After finally getting to Long Beach, the sun had regained a yellow color, yet visibility was still only a few miles. When getting out of the car, I noticed the soft top on the Boxter I had hired was covered with a thin sprinkling of ash. The following day (Saturday) I spent shopping in Santa Monica before leaving that night from LAX... and from what I've heard, it seems like in the nick of time before things got REALLY bad... :-( I loved my stay in L.A. and hate to see this disaster unfolding in California... I hope it's all under control soon and as few lives and homes are lost as possible.

Here are pictures from my hosue in Porter Ranch. My neighbor Scott took them. My 308 was on jackstands in teh garage and I was worried for a while. My friend Riichard took the wheels off his and brought them over. The fire seems to be gone but just incase, the 308 is ready to get out.

Pete, you just have to get a routine going. In all seriousness, here's my car with ash and here's how it looks now. The only thing I did was a 15 minute wipe down (paint, bumpers, windows, chrome) with a microfiber cloth and a spray bottle filled with 1/2 water 1/2 quick detailer solution. Covered when parked for more than an hour, even inside the garage. Sunny

i live in san diego and the raining of ashes has been really bad. my cars are tucked away and covered but what saddens me is that it will be a long while before i will be able to drive them again. the dust and ash will be around for a long time...no rain to wash it away! does this frustrate anybody else as much as i? since living here, i have noticed that i have to work so hard to keep my cars clean even w/o the fire...how do you all do it? the thing i miss most about the east coast is you can take a car out spottless and bring it back spottless...addmittedly, you do have to pay attention to the weather report though!! on a more serious note...i hope you all are well and the fire has not touched any of you or loved ones...hope for rain!!! |

My 355 looked like I'd smoked a CARTONS of Camel lights while driving and never used the ashtray. Jay was nice to dust the exterior before we left the cafe and 110mph through back bay blew off the rest! |

I walked outside to empty the trashes and it smelled like a giant Bar-B-Que (not the trash ). I thought I actually smelt kind of good but it the ash is messing up everything. Our side walk and porch is covered in ash. And our cars...it looks like somebody painted our cars grey over night! It's horrible, when will it end! |

After comming home from CC, I parked my car outside for an hour before my wife and I went a few places today. When I came outside, my car had a nice coating of moisture mixed with ash. The car looked terrible. The ash got into everything even the inside. I did not have time to give it a bath. With the fires still burning, I will wait until next week end. Rats. Any of you have this problem? |
