Hi Ton,

Has your mechanic managed to get hold of two sets of gas struts? There are a set of generic, "no-name-brand" stuts on e-Bay at the moment: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2408334336&category=6775

well ton

the race pads are a lot better when you brake the car hot from the higher speed and on the race track the discs are a lot more but i allways have to check the best price from them when you need them but they hold long so first have to messure them when the are thick less then 20mm you need to replace them

Is that for the pads or the discs? And what is the difference between the racing and the normal ones?

Ooooooh that hurts!!!!

I bet you did that on purpose!! :-)

No just kidding! I can imagine that you took the car out for a ride. The weather was absolutely beautiful. I really hope that you had a great time (I don't doubt it). I felt bad about not having the car today for the same reason. But there will be more sunny days (I hope) to come!

Ton

btw I posted the question in the tech section. Thanks for the advice.

Ton,

Avec la "carte blanche" pour le mechanic tu es absolument correct! :-)
About the ball bearings I would strongly suggest to post a thread in the Tech section! If you do today you will have an answer tomorrow. I personally think that it is not necessary to exchange both sides if just one is broken. But hey: Little do I know...
By the way: Dont want to tease you but I just took out the car for 100km. It was fantastic with the weather :-) :-) :-)
Its exactly like Jackie Ickx said about Ferrari at the last Modena Motorsport meeting: Small kids have small toys, big kids have big toys...

Thanks! I will definitely keep that in mind. I think that all the problems will be resolved now. But how much cost the brake pads and discs for a 328?

Hi Jens,

Trust is relative! I think that you should never give a mechanic with a small business a carte blanche. He is very good in his work but I think that he renews parts very quickly. He probably wants to make the car like new. I will talk to him on tuesday or wednesday when I pick up the car. He renewed the front braking pads while they were only half in size. I am not sure if I had to have them renewed. I also told him only to renew the ball-bearing that is broken. Why should I need a new ball-bearing on the left when it is functioning normally?

Ton,

Usual week of work with backaching at the end of the day! My only social contacts seem to be limited to chatting at this board at the moment. :-(
Nevertheless work is going on quiet good. Hope to have ready a first concept for my project somewhere next week. Rest will be talking to others about details and what they think about it.

Glad your family and you "came back in one piece" from skiing. :-) Great you had good weather, yesterday a friend of mine told me that he has never seen me being so pale and white in the face. Guess I need to go on a small holiday with some sun as well...

Refering to the car: Believe me I know very well how you feel! :-( Welcome to the world of exotic italian sport cars... But enough with the cynical comments. The amount he charges you is really high! Paid the same for the whole renewing of my transmission. Again seems to be that some minor things are summing up to a tremendous price. Thats extremly often the case with Ferrari.
Guess the manifolds bending were the most expensive part? Due to brake pads and discs: I would perhaps ask Rosenmeyer if they pay it since it is not quite fair to sell you a car with foul front brakes (although my car needed replacement of these as well when first serviced).
Last time you told me that you trust this mechanic so I guess you just have to accept the bill but I would ask for a detailed bill for sure..
Perhaps we can meet somewhere the next weeks to have a spin with the cars again? Would be nice although my terrible voice hasnt been getting any better yet.

Hi Jens,

I am back! Sunburnt by the beautiful snow conditions. I read that some new members have joined the club. That's great!

I was unpleasantly surprised by my mechanic today with a reparation bill of 3300,-!!! (and my car not finished). He changed as discussed the engine and transmission oil, put in a K&N filter and changed the gasstruts. But....... he also welded a crack in the manifold(?), changed the ball-bearings at the front(?) and renewed the front brakes and discs. This took him 18hrs of labour.
On top of the bad news my car was still not ready to pick up. :-( I looked forward to picking up again my car the whole week in CH. As you can imagine this was a big dissapointment. I will be working on monday and probably pick it up on tuesday.

How was your week? Still working hard for the deadline?

Hi Ton & Jens,

My postal details are on their way to you Ton - I'm so glad I joined this list! I hope you have a good holiday.

My car needs to go in as soon as the weather improves. It needs a thorough clean (after basically standing in a garage & collecting dust for seven years), a full technical review, an oil change and a new cam belt. Then I'll feel confident for the summer. Oh - and if I get the standard silencer in the UK, I will fit it instead of the current custom made cat-silencer. That will see me through until I fall in line for a Tubi.

I can't wait for summer!

Jens - bad news. I today learned that I will not be able to join in the 1st European Ferrarichat track meeting as I will be working on a project from which I cannot withdraw Damn - I was looking forward to that...

Ton,

Actually I have not noticed that shifting has become easier. On the other hand I have never noticed that it is considerably hard to do, so what!
Current engine oil that has been put into the car by the official Ferrari dealer at the inspection was 5W-30 from Shell so nothing really special, I guess. Is the Agip oil really better or just more expensive? :-)

Ton,

The K&N should really do no harm to the engine. The transmission oil has been changed with my transmission rebuilt last time as well and the mechanic told me it is the best for the 348 and improves the shifting so it should be something similar to what your 328 gets now.
Concerning the thorough check I wish you good luck and no bad surprises. I am pretty sure that everything is OK. The car looked as if in very good shape last time I saw it :-)
All the best to Belgium and for your skiing holiday!

Jens,

My mechanic will also install a K&N filter for more hp and a faster respons to the throttle. He also advises Agip 10/60 racing oil for the engine and a different oil for the transmission (smoother shifting). Furthermore he will do a good check on the car. I am already looking forward to picking it up again next week.

The gas struts are 38 each. These are the original Ferrari struts for a 328 with spoiler (heavy duty).
Sounds like a good deal to me.

Thanks for the advice Ton.

I do not have a Ferrari mechanic that I can speak to or share ideas with so I will be interested to hear what your man has to say.

I was recently in South Africa. The Ferrari dealer at the Kyalami race circuit was able to provide me with a generic make of gas strut, unfortunately available only in white. However, he would have resprayed them black. I don't recall what the price was, but I can check with them. I will be in SA again in May so if you need a set of resprayed-generic-struts, let me know!

Personally I find Italiancarparts.com very expensive. They also charge a lot for S&H. I am interested in one of those gate vault locks but I find the item overpriced (especially if you include S&H). I will ask my mechanic what the normal price is for the gas struts. I will let you know.

If the disk is any good, I'll post the content to my website. By the way, gas struts are on sale here at US$ 169.95 a pair: http://www.italiancarparts.com/parts/ferrariparts.html (scroll down to Struts [in red] close to the end of the page).

...does that sound reasonable??

Gents,

The other day on e-Bay I bought a Ferrari 328 "parts equivalency" disk. Apparently it lists the parts used by other marques that are also used in the 328, complete with cross-referenced part numbers.

I have yet to receive it in the mail but, when I do, I'll let you have the equivalent Fiat part number for the gas struts (if this is not just an urban legend!)

Hi Ton,

I hope to join the Fchat meet in June, although it will be tough for me to get away on Thursday. So I may only be there for the weekend.

Does anyone have GPS co-ordinates for the venues that are being proposed? That would be the easiest way for me to find everyone without wasting too much time!

I am currently writing up the experiences I had when buying my 328 and will post in due course.

Although I am not adressed by your mail I think I have to add that there is absolutely no need to feel uncomfortable with your "little S2000". You are a Ferrarichat member as we all are and it doesnt matter whether you own a Ferrari or not as long as you have some "passione" for the cars with the prancing horse.
I will be in Spa for sunday for sure and as Ton I can offer you a ride in my 348tb if you want to.

Ton,

500 km in a Ferrari in one day, that has to feel great!
I only drove twice a Ferrari, it was for only 30kms each and that allready felt fantastic!
The first time i only was 20 years old and it was a 348 ts.
The second time it was a... a 328 GTS!!! This time i was 22!
At that moment i decided that one day: 'i'm gonna buy my own Ferrari!'
Last year i nearly rented a 360 modena for a day, but the car had some engineproblems and the car was of the road for at least 2 weeks, so my holiday was over! But this summer i'm definately gonna rent a F-car! (355 Spider or 360 Modena)

BTW, for the trackday at Spa, are you also going for the whole weekend and are you staying in the same hotel as Bart Bosmans?

I wish you a very nice weekend and lots of Ferrari-driving, the weather seems to be good also! but remember, drive save!!

I feel like I could take her out for another 500 km. I just love the sound of that steel sport exhaust!

Jens,

Good luck on picking up your car tomorrow. We will definitely meet for a drink soon.

Guy,

Absolutely no problem. I'd be happy to take you on a round.

Ton :-) :-) :-)

Wow,

I just returned from Stuttgart and had my first long (500km) drive in my 328 GTS. There are no words to describe how I feel. It was absolutely fantastic!! Unfortunately there was a lot of traffic (trucks, trucks and trucks) on the autobahn so it was difficult to really let the car go. But I used every free bit of autobahn to shift back and feel the power. It is so much more comfortable then I expected it would be. And I am also amazed how easy the car drives and handles at high and low speeds. Today is certainly a memorable day!

Ton,

How was your first drive with the 328 on the wild german Autobahn? :-)
Should have been no problem to keep up with the trafficflow, I guess :-)
Hope you will have lots of fun with the car and never look back...

Ton,

Congratulations with the very nice looking 328 GTS!!
It sure looks brand new! 30000km, that's hardly run in!
I'm also looking forward to meeting you with the F-car! It'll probably be at Spa.
Maybe you can take me also for a lap around the track?! Then i'll take you in the S2000 for a spin!

BTW, did you go to that shop in Hasselt last saturday?
I didn't have time, but maybe it's better to stay away there because i always spend way to much money!

See or hear you later!!

CIAO..

Ton,

That's great news since the weather should be perfect tomorrow! 450km are good to get used to the car and to perfect your skills in shifting smoothly without much clicking from the open metal shifting panel (This shows weather you are a novice or a pro in your Ferrari :-))
Nevertheless enjoy your ride and the friendly waves from people you have never seen before.
Will be back in Bonn at friday and keep you informed about my car to arrange a small ride with our beasts!

Bart,

Don't worry about it! It shows more then clearly that I am also clueless from time to time!
I'd still be happy to take you on a round at the Nurnbergring!

Hmmmm.....

I guess that even now that I own a Ferrari I still don't have a clue! :-)

Jens,

I will try to pick up the car in Stuttgart tomorrow! It will be my first experience with "Die Bahn" to get there. But after that I will enjoy my new baby for 450 km driving her home!

Oh wow, I am looking forward to that!

Matt,

I agree about the F-40 but I am not sure about the final development of the 348.

But who am I to know?

Ton,

Actually Matt is right! The last Ferrari released before Enzo Ferraris death was the 348. This doesnt matter too much though as he was never really interested in the street cars the factory produced.
What I have read lately is that he was really excited about the F40 though! Actually this proves once again that his interest was clearly in racecars.
Nevertheless the 328 has a really great and timeless design IMO!

Ton,

the F-40 (88) and 348's (late 88) were the last car Enzo supervised before his death.

Bart,

It is a 328! The last Ferrari built under the strict supervision of Enzo Ferrari. The last of the Mohanicans. I have always wanted this special model. It is a timeless classic Ferrari.

Amar,

Believe me that there is a huge grin on my face! It must be the ugly shape of my face that is conceiling it. :-)

Jens,

Absolutely! I will let you know when I pick up the car. I am already looking forward to it!

This is absolutely a fantastic feeling!!

Hi guys,

Today I finally bought my 328 GTS! It is an '87 rosso corsa / nero with only 30.000 km in superb condition. This is definitely the one that I have been looking for. The weather was beautiful today and I testdrove it for more than one hour in the German hills. The car felt so good that I did not want to give it back. Unfortunately I could not take it home today. I will pick it up somewhere next week. Here are the first pictures. An update will follow after I picked up the car.Upload
