Ton,

Take a look at this nice (understated) unit:

http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_detail.jsp?product_id=3176&taxonomy_id=25-121

I saw one last week and I think it fits the bill. If I remember correctly, the price was about GBP 325.

Hi Ton,

There's an interesting new option on the market:

http://full-line-audio.com/Kenwood/kenwood_music_keg.htm

http://www.kenwoodusa.com/product/product.jsp?productTypeId=162&productLineId=1&productId=2373

http://www.kenwoodusa.com/excelon/excelonKeg.jsp

...it's just a pity that you need to install an external box like a CD-Changer. It would be better if the cartridge just plugged into the radio.

Hi Ton,

Sony seem to have some interesting MP3 players on offer: http://www.xplodsony.com/products/?CATEGORY=CD&MD=CDX-MP40 The other players listed on the left of the page are great, but the CDX-MP40 seems well priced, understated and not "overkill"! As I won't be using the stereo that much, maybe this is the best "bang-for-buck" so far.

Mark,

The last 10 months have been crazy. I worked 3 to 4 out of 4 weekends every month. But things will change (and get better) in May. The car stereo has been pretty low on my "to do" list. I hope that I will have some time to inform myself about the different radios next month.

Hi Ton,

It's unfortunate that you have to work this weekend...but I think I will have to do the same on Monday as I have too much on my plate at the moment. April has been a crazy month for me and May-June is going to be be no better. Oh well, that's the way I pay the bills and afford my pleasures.

The car sterio is low on my list of priorities right now, but let's keep in touch!

Heiko,

The old Kenwood in my car (see first message in this thread) dates back to 1986, as do the speakers in the doors. Like Jens, I have not used my radio/tape, but would at least like to install something that would work if I really wanted it to! But for obvious reasons (i.e. there are other interesting sounds to listen to), I don't want to over-capitalise. MP3 is also a must.

He-he!! Today is my 8th wedding anniversary. This time eight years ago my wife and I moved into a large, fairly empty house that had one feature that my wife did not enjoy...a vintage motorcycle being rebuilt in the middle of the dining room floor! OK - it didn't last long (i.e. I was relegated to one of the spare rooms), but Debra soon learned from experience that I am passionate (or should that be obsessive?) about my vehicles!! My 328 is a continuation of that trend - "I am one" with the car!

Hmmm...getting the completed motorcycle down the stairs was interesting! But that's another story.

Becker definitely is not cheap but they really produce very good radios! Look out at ebay, perhaps you can get a used one cheaper. I love mine in the BMW but it annoys me that it cant be used as microwave oven for that price :-)

Mark,

I dont know all the Becker radios too good. I have a Becker Traffic Pro which is basically the same as the Mexiko Pro with GPS navigation. Its very good!!!
Try www.becker.de for all the details. They have quite a good homepage where you can look at the details of all radios. The Mexiko Pro can be chosen either as CD or MD radio. Guess only the Online Pro radio can play MP3 files.
Referring to the Ferrari versions of the Becker radios see my first post at this thread:
"The ones from Ferrari also show the Ferrari sign as starting display when turned on (Again the normal ones only show the Becker sign). It was sold for around 150 Euro which was quite a bargain.
The "Ferrari" Becker Mexico or Traffic Pro can only be bought from an official Ferrari dealer I suppose (Expensive!)... "
Hoped that helped a bit!

Hi Jens & Ton,

I have been looking at the Becker Mexico Pro 4627 CD Tuner: http://www.soundlabsgroup.com.au/becker/becker_range.htm

I don't see any mention of MP3 playback. Didn't you say it could handle MP3 Jens? Furthermore, how do I identify if it is the "Ferrari" version of the radio...an F-badge on the face plate?

Hi Jens,

Sorry that I did not get back to you yesterday but it got a little busy. I think that you are right! Probably there is NO powerloss. I think that it is all in the mind. But I will have the mechanic check the car anyway. It also means that the car is not sitting in the garage for a week while we are not at home (burglary prevention).
We have been in Wengen one time before and it is a very nice place to be. The holiday will be a little bit of business combined with pleasure but I am very sure that we will enjoy it. I will let you know as soon as I get back.

Mark,

it's funny to realize that we are both looking for the same thing. Let's keep eachother updated about the progress. Lesions of the cruciate ligament are a pain. You need good exercise to stabilize your knee again. Just remember that there are professional footbalplayers with NO anterior cruciate ligaments in a knee, and they are still active. But be careful when you go skiing or sporting anyway.

"Deurnagdiens" - but that's OK if there's a holiday at the end of it. Lucky guy Ton; enjoy the break! I screwed up my right knee last February skiing outside of Ljubljana, Slovenia. I tore the Anterior Cruciate Ligament and had to have surgery 9 months ago. My leg is still recovering and I'll unfortunately have to stay off of the snow this season. My wife and I generally visit the region between Kitzbuhel and Zell am Zee/Kaprun two or three times a year. "Gemütlichkeit" = oh yes!

I agree with you totally Ton - as I said in my original posting: "no garish flashing lights or graphics". I dislike them intensely - I think they lack class, and they always remind me of some of the WORST taxi rides I've ever had!

Ton,

Exactly: Deadline for my work is april the 7th of 2003. Still some time to go but sadly lots of work as well. Its actually a project where I have to find the best solution for a private public relationship between a community and a private investor to promote and develop a residentual area.
Not uninteresting from a legal and engineering point of view.
Actually what I have heard from Wengen is that it is a rather small swiss village and skiing area with lots of "Gemütlichkeit" :-)
This is going to be very nice, I am sure.
Do you have any real proofs for the loss of power in your 328? Perhaps its just an arkward illusion since I sometimes encounter these feelings too with my car. Mostly they are not correct after asking some experts. Hope this is the same with your problem.

Hi Jens,

I am currently at work too and will stay here until tomorrow morning. But then it's a holiday! We are leaving on saturday for Wengen(CH). We will return the next saturday. I am really looking forward to it because it gives us some precious time together in the snow. I will bring the 328 to my mechanic because I have the feeling that it is losing some power. I don't think that it is a big thing but it also gives him a chance to have a real good thorough look at the car while I am away.
Why are you working so hard? Do you have a deadline on a project?

Ton - I have e-mailed you some photos that I got from Donny Bridges who's installed the Pioneer MP3 player in his 308. It looks pretty neat. However, to avoid cognitive dissonance later on, I guess I'll have to some more homework to find out what other MP3 players are available in Europe.

Ton & Jens,

Yes - it sounds like Ton and I are looking for the same thing, and a agree whole-heartedly about the CD-changer. I've never owned one and I don't want one - MP3 is a much more elegant way to go as far as I am concerned. As I said, 15 albums on a disk, so whe needs a clumpy, outdated changer adding complexity and taking up valuable space?

I concur regarding the price-quality ratio. I certainly don't intend over-capitalising as I don't think I'll be using the CD/radio that much (and I speak from 17 years experience with an Alfa Spider)!

In my original posting I also mentioned that I'm looking for something "understated". Ideally I would like the stereo system to have that mid-80's look, but with 21st century technology inside. Aesthetically it must blend in, and not be an eyesore.

I absolutely agree with you! I am not interested in a cd changer. Just as Mark I am interested in an mp3 player. I think that Mark and I are both looking for the same thing for the same reasons. On the other hand I don't want to put a very expensive radio in the car because I will hardly ever use it.

The Becker radio could be interesting although I wonder why the guy did not post a picture of the original radio.

Its actually not a changer but just a normal one disc system. Nevertheless it is still possible to additionally connect a cd changer. Perhaps not such a good idea in my opinion if you look at the limited luggage compartment in a Ferrari. It would get even smaller...

Hi Jens,

Thanks for the valuable information. It would be great to have something "official" and with a Ferrari logo, so I will keep my eyes on e-Bay!

However, I am really keen to be able to play MP3 disks as this eliminates the need for a shuttle changer. On a typical MP3 disk one can fit approximately 150 tracks...which will probably keep me busy for the rest of my productive years!

The first two Pioneers at the top of this list look interesting:

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pioneer/CDA/CarProducts/CarAlbum/0,1427,40~4010~4010600,00.html

...the first one actually has a 10gb hard drive, but the price is outrageous.

Ton and Mark,

Since I suppose the 328 has the typical standard radio slot I would recommend you a radio from Becker.
The Becker Mexico or Becker Traffic Pro (Mexico+GPS Navigation) are excellent radios with an inbuilt cd slot which is behind the display.

Actually these two radios are standard radios which are built in every Ferrari now directly at the factory with the 360 and 575M
At ebay germany there was a used Mexico which had the original Ferrari signs above the display like the ones built in directly (The normal ones you can buy at a radio store have just a Becker sign!). The ones from Ferrari also show the Ferrari sign as starting display when turned on (Again the normal ones only show the Becker sign). It was sold for around 150 Euro which was quite a bargain.
The "Ferrari" Becker Mexico or Traffic Pro can only be bought from an official Ferrari dealer I suppose (Expensive!)...

Con saluti cordialissimi,
Jens Haller

P.S. Have a Traffic Pro in my BMW Z3 myself and am extremly satisfied with it!

The only problem within the European section is that there are not very many 328 owners.

My 328 GTS has a period radio/tape deck and old speakers that I would like to remove and replace with updated items. Its not that I want to play music over the sound of the engine , but my current outfit has seen better days. If Im going to have a sound system in the car, I would like it to look presentable and work properly!

Kenwood-Face

I currently have a Kenwood KRC-424 Cassette Receiver fitted and it powers what I assume are original speakers. Questions can anyone:

Recommend a Single CD Player that plays normal CDs, CD-Rs and MP3-encoded discs? It must also be understated (no garish flashing lights or graphics), match the dashboard, and be installable without cutting anything! Some of the top-end Pioneers look interesting.
Recommend a make and model of quality, high-performance speakers that will fit in the doors to replace the speakers that came with the car?
Help me to remove the Kenwood radio from my dashboard! To remove the unit, one is supposed to insert the supplied removal brackets into the holes located at the right and left of the front panel. The brackets are held by the hook. Pull the brackets to take out the unit.

Kenwood-Bracket

I unfortunately did not receive the Kenwood removal brackets from the previous owner. Does anyone out there have an old set that they would like to get rid of?
