Yes - for sure Amar. I know TCR well and have parted with wads of money there before! We will be in London next week (going to see the Art Deco exhibition at the Victoria & Albert) and I will make sure I get to TCR as well.

Since I last went shopping there I have polished my negotiating skills in the markets of Egypt, Tunisia, Cambodia and Thailand. I'm ready for them!

Mark, you should try Tottenham Court Road the next time you're in London - there are a bunch of electronics and audio shops north of Oxford St and you can even negotiate prices!

Noooo! Useless. I went to one branch of "The Wiz" and many smaller electro-stores, but did not see one car radio! I guess that Manhattan is not the best place to look as the people that live there generally do not have cars...they tend to use public transport or taxis.

I actually read an article in one of yesterday's newspapers that mentioned that dealers in Manhattan were no longer stocking radios as they just don't sell in that part of town.

So...back to the drawing board!

Hi Ton,

I heard from my insurance broker today that I should receive my international "green card" insurance within 5-10 days. I'm looking forward to April!!

Hey - I have the morning off tomorrow and will see if I can find some interesting car audio systems here.

Hi Gents,

Greetings from New York! Hey, me too - I also still love looking at other Ferraris. My God - they are just gorgeous machines. I will have to own more in the years to come!!

As a motorcycle rider I am used to the "fraternity" aspect of ownership. Motorcycle riders generally greet each other (with the exception of 2-stroke riders and Harley owners) I have not yet encountered another F-car on the road, but look forward to the meeting!

Hey Ton...you and Jens should travel further east!

Currywurst mit pommes sounds like a great lunch to me. It will be a lot of fun to have a look at the ring and watch some other exotic and less exotic cars fly by. I agree that the spotters will probably be surprised when we park our cars to have a look

Ton,

I have already set up a nice route for sunday! We are also coming along the Nürburgring at the route so we can as well take a look there and at Breidscheid (a corner at the track)where we can have a nice "German" snack: Do you know the taste of a "Currywurst mit Pommes"?
Its not very gourmet-like but a typical german fast food thing. They will most probably look very surprised when we park the Ferraris in front of their little booth :-)

Ton,

The only difference to the time that you didnt own your very own Ferrari is that now the other Ferrari owners greet you back when waving to them :-)
At least this was the case with me after getting my 348...

Mark,

Nice picture! I also still like to look at other Ferrari's. It is always a pleasure to visit the Ferrari-dealer. Yesterday I drove my Ferrari and saw a 550 maranello and a 355 spider on the road. Nothing has changed since I own my own Ferrari. I still twisted my neck to be able to have a look at these cars.

So guys, Good driving today? I spent most of the day:

* Watching the Malaysian Grand Prix
* Getting my BMW motorcycle out of mothballs and back onto the road (did a quick 120km in the country)
* Tidying up my newly acquired silencer!

See another thread for a picture that proves how hard a worked with my Bosch drill and wire brush today:

http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/223734.html?1048458714

Should I leave the silencer bare metal or should I paint it? What doo you think?

Ton,

the picture was taken at the "Pass dal Fuorn" in 2149m last year on the way to Maranello. Usuall we don not drive in Switzerland/Italy thru the "Tunnels"; we prefer the mountains and climb over all the hills/passes. Its much more fund driving this smal roads up to the hills; and its always snowy white at the top. The roads are clear but beside is stil lat lot of snow...what a fun!!!

Hi Mark,

Ups, I haven`t seen this thread. Sorry I`m still a Rookie.
Well, I know the problem and have had a long phone conversation with Heiko about the correct TUBI for my car. My 308QV is a 1984 U.S. Model - original with cat & short pipes. As I mentioned in another thread, I reinstalled the cat for a steel pipe in the same sice. The right TUBI to fit my car perfect is a TUBI Racing 328 US cat version - of course without the cat (once again thanks to Heiko!)
Now I`m also waiting for the TUBI.

Hi Wolfgang,

No - it's unfortunately not a Tubi but a standard silencer that I bought here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2405482344

Take a look at the pictures at the bottom of this page to see why I need it!: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/212428.html?1046818004

....I will also be patient and get a Tubi in due course. I have to buy a house first!

Hmmm... "Season Plates"! I have a related frustration, and won't be able to do any serious driving till April. But For the month of April, I'm mostly away from home - New York, Nigeria, Prague, Spain and who knows where else at this stage.

So it looks my first "real" driving of the season will be in May

Hey Guys,

I'm back! Here's some advice...don't try to smuggle a 328 silencer onto a flight in your hand-luggage!

That's me back at home yesterday evening with my new toy. And yes, I did get it onto the flight!

They stopped the seasonplates in Belgium and Holland a couple of years ago. So now your car has to be registered for the whole year. That is unfortunate on bad weather days but it provides an enormous freedom on the few beautiful days in the winter.

HM...I would prefer 05./06.04.2003 (weekend after the one you mentioned). Because...Heiko will be back and take part in the "Corso", I think about being there too (but ONLY if it doesn't rain *g*) and most of the guys of FC BaWü have "season plates" (I think) so their cars can not be driven before the beginning of April.

Just my two...

Wolfgang,

This would be absolutely great! Ton and I spoke about driving trough the Ahrtal and the Eifel. I wanted to show him the route we are taking at the meeting in june. It leads directly through the Ahrtal and its well known "Rotwein-Strae" which is quite nice. If there we could as well cruise through the Eifel which is directly near by. Of course we would pass the Nordschleife at some point just in case... :-)
Advantage is that all sites are relatively near by. Length of that route would be around 100km altogether. We could combine the trip with a nice lunch somewere in the area.
If you want to take the long trip from Karlsruhe etc. to join us that would be really cool from you...

Wolfgang,

Jens is right about the Tubi. Don't want it too extreme because it will get you in trouble. I hope that you can hear the "regular" Tubi on my 328 and on Jens's 348 soon. You will be very impressed.

Now I`m 100% sure to install a TUBI. My car was factory delivered with a cat. But we **** off the cat for more Tone & PS. Now there is only a piece of steel pipe installed insted of the caty.
I will contact right now Manu for a sound file and prices for the TUBI.

Wolfgang,

I have looked up the 308 at the general catalogue of TUBI. There are different silencers but just for the different models of the 308 (Cat, non cat, cabureted etc.).
For the 348 though there are two different types of silencers. One is the normal and the other one is the tube only silencer. I have got the normal one combined with TUBI test pipes that have replaced the cats for more performance and power.
Even the dealers are telling you to choose the normal TUBI since the more extreme one is basically a race version which is very, very, very loud. Most probably you will not pass any TV or police car you drive by because its simply too loud even for the passengers inside.
As far as I can see such an extreme version is only provided for the 348 and 355 etc. and not for the 308 so I guess you dont seem to have a choice.
Concerning the sound you dont need to worry. With my car the TUBI behaves just like you mentioned: At low revs its a bassy sound which begins to scream from 5000rpm upwards. As far as I know all TUBI should have that distinctive characteristic.
If you have any specific questions about best sport exhausts for the 308 you should definitely call Manu at SCUDERIASYSTEMS. He knows vitually everything about TUBI and will most probably be able to mail you a sound clip of a 308 with a TUBI on. Bought my TUBI from him and they were fast and had a very, very competitive price...
He is an extremly helpful and friendly guy and IMO they definitely have the best prices for TUBI in whole europe. Just shoot him a mail and mention that I recommended you. Feel free to ask him everything you like to know since he is a real pro
( [email protected] ).
By the way: He is also a member of this board and will come to the meeting in june.
On the other hand: You can as well ask Heiko about these things. But hey, two opinions are better than one, I suppose...
Hope that helped a bit!

I`m looking to get one with deep basses in the lower rpm. and crying like a 360 over 5.000rpm.
Which one is the best?

Manu, thanks for the sage advice and the quote that I received this afternoon. I think the Tubi has made my "to buy" list...but I may only get there in a few months time! Priorities, priorities...

Cheers, MARK

Hi Guys.

Whether your Ferrari is a 328 or a 355 - there is really never a problem with de-catting it. It does wonders for the temperature dispersion - and adds a little power too! Cats only remove the very last X% of pollutants and you'll be amazed of the state of them when they come off cars - most of them are hollow anyway. Very occasionally there may be problems with the Bosch 7.3 Motronic on the 360M when we fit test pipes to de-cat - in this scenario we just fit O2 simulators to keep the ECU happy.

Mark - I'm going to get back to you ASAP about giving a quote (I've got terrible toothache and I'm just popping off to the dentist).
The thing is there is a HUGE difference between a so called "sport exhaust" and a Tubi. Most "sport exhaust" maker build replicas of the original silencer in marginally higher quality stainless steel and then rip out some of the baffling/sound insulation. There is no fine tuning of the "note" - how can they do it - they hardly have sonic chambers.....??
This rudimentary technology is EXACTLY the same that they would apply to their Subaru Imprezas/Escort RS Cosworths exhaust systems. Yes the result IS louder but who wants 110dB of pure bass.....??

All V8 Ferraris can be made to scream like F1 cars and THIS is Tubi Styles objective not increasing volume.... as an example, we converted a F355 on Tuesday (doing another on Friday) which ALREADY had a "sport exhaust" - it sounded pretty loud but it had the same, flat, boring bassy note throughout the rev range - After Tubi installation, the customer said "it was like having new car."

Mark,

The Tubi was already on the car when I bought it (just plain luck I guess). I was worried about the annual technical inspection too. But Mark C is right, they don't check the noise level. I had absolutely no problem.
I really don't know if there is a big difference between the Tubi and other steel sport exhausts. But Bart is making a good point. Send an email to [email protected] and he will provide you with all the information you need. He is a nice guy.

the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) is the main control for the fuelling, ignition etc etc. The Euro 328 didn't have a Cat so no lambda probe or Oxygen sensor so if you have either of these then they can go as well as the Cats. My concern is whther somebody has change the main ECU to a US type that supports these probes/sensors.

Hayward and Scott have a very good reputation not just in the Ferrari market sort of the Rolls Royce of exhausts although I understand their prices are not too bad

Bart & Mark,

Thanks...I'm learning a lot here! I was also advised to look at Hayward and Scott exhausts: http://www.haywardandscott.co.uk/ - do either of you have any experience with them?

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is an ECU? I would guess an Emission Control Unit - the probe in the exhaust (and associated box of tricks) that senses emission levels? If I remove the cat, then I guess I won't need an ECU - please correct me if I'm wrong! But I suppose it will be more complex than just removing the ECU.

There is what appears to be an after-market plastic box with a couple of cables coming out of it in the car's boot (opposite side to the radio antenna), and I thought that this had something to do with the exhaust as it has US stickers on it. It will investigate under the car, shoot some pictures and post my findings in due course.

Cheers, MARK

they don;t test the noise level on the annual inspection (MOT Test) so a Tubi will be fine, however you might also want to talk to Kent High Performance, I had a Sporte Exaust fitted by them for around 600, it registered 108dB and you could hear the car coming over a mile away! The car also went much better with a noticable power improvement over standard

In the UK a car of that age does not require a cat so it could be removed, only other thing is that maybe a US ECU was fitted to help meet the emissions? I am sure Euro ECU's are easy to find but might be worth speaking to a specialist like QV in Ascot or again Kent High Performance

Ton & Jens,

I have been reading the thread on Tubi exhausts at http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/199278.html and learned a lot. Ton, for interest's sake, what did the exhaust cost you in the Netherlands?

Please also see my posting at http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/212428.html?1046818004 as I would like to hear your opinions.

As you will read in my posting, my car is European, but was in the USA for a short while and so had an after-market catalytic converter installed. I have no idea about EU exhaust, emission and noise legislation. In the UK I have to have an annual technical inspection...and I'm sure that I will fail the noise test with the Tubi! Furthermore, what would the authorities say if I removed the cat and fitted an exhaust without one?

All the best, MARK
