Yes, there's a picture of the long. engine in the article. Only difference is the intake plenum does not have the ribs cast on top like the 348/Mondial "t". Otherwise, its the same. Yes, again in the Ferrari Story book, they note the S/S chassis. Its also mentioned in "Symbol" magazine, issue #21 - Winter 1988. |

Thanks Peter. Quick question: Do you know if the PPG car's engine is mounted longitudinally like the Mondial T? Also, I don't remember ever reading about the red 408 having a steel chassis! Did that come from Ferrari Story as well? |

Only the yellow 408 had an aluminum chassis, the first - red - one had a stainless-steel chassis... Again, the PPG car uses the F119D - 348 - engine... (This is according to Ferrari Story #16 "Prototipi") |

Yes! Wayne is right. I had them totally merged in my mind. As I was falling asleep last night, I wondered if there was not some confusion on my part. |

Ric, I think you are confusing the PPG Pace Car (s/n 76390) with the two 408 test cars (s/n's 70183 and 78501?) (see photo below). The PPG car was based on a Mondial and, as far as I know, was powered by the 3.4l engine. The 408s were engineering studies built on aluminum tubular chassis and powered by experimental 4.0l engines.
The yellow 408 is on display on the upper level of the Ferrari Galleria in Maranello. It is partially dismantled to showcase its aluminum structure. Is this where the engine is on display as well? Yes, this is also where the PPG Pace Car is currently displayed. |

My mistype, that should have read "408". Here is a picture of a 4.0 Litre 328 based motor, on display in one of Ferrari's Museums (I forget which).
I was fairly certain it said something about it being used in one of the 2 PPG cars (non-officially called the 408).

Actually, its the I.D.E.A. PPG Pace Car prototype, built on a Mondial chassis and uses the 348 engine (basically the test-bed for the Mondial "t"). The four-litre engines were never made from 328 blocks - the bore was too large @ 93mm. They carry their own type# of F117. They were the 4WD prototypes that used at first a stainless steel chassis, then the second prototype used an aluminum one. Those cars look more like an NSX...

Ahaa, thank you Ric for filling in the details. I shot this at Road America Indy Car 200, September 1988.

Ugly POS... PPG prototype, based on a 328 chassis. Rumor circulated that it was the "428", the replacement for the 328. R&T even had it on the cover, if I remember correctly (idiots). Ferrari had a few 4.0L motors made from 328 blocks and hence the name. I sure would love to get my hands on one of those motors! IMHO, I think it was a mistake for Ferrari to make it, as it caused a large rift between Ferrari and Pinnifarina.

I found this in my archives. Don't have details other than year and location. No serial number.
