...anyway, let me correct you...the e36 M3 does 60 in not 'just under 6 seconds' it happens to be 5.4 seconds..not shy from your cabrio's 5.2... ...either way, im not trying to say the e36 is anywhere near as quick as the e46, only stating that its more of a true drivers car...and still hands it to e46's to this day with a design that is nearly 10 years old... ...resembling a 930-993 to e36-e46 is quite an exaggeration, but atleast its clear that the e36 is a nimbler car... ...on any note i like the e46 M3 very much, the interior is years ahead of the terribly designed e36 interior, not to mention much higher quality...and of course the massive power is very impressive from the n/a inline six. let me apologize for ruining the topic of the thread... |

Chris - you join this board and your first post is to tell me to STFU! What is an Imbisul? Maybe you should ask your parents for a dictionary and a course on manners. |

David... E46 M3 is a great car, dont get me wrong. Stop being a biased homo and stfu. You sound like a total imbisul on this subject. Congrats on the new car. |

Trevor - the E46 is 200 pounds heavier (not a big difference) and has almost 100 HP more and has more torque (263 vs. 236). The E36 did 0-60 in just under 6 seconds. The E46 is about a second faster. The difference is huge. I have owned 911's as well ('85, '91, '95). The difference between an E36 and an E46 was like the difference between my '85 carrera and my '95 993(the 85 was lighter than my 95 993). However, there was no comparison in performance between the 85 and the 95. If I had a track with 50 yard starights maybe the 85 would win. Otherwise they were in different leagues. the E36 is from a different era - very competent in its day - and still a good car. Today it is very underpowered relative to what's out there. |

a good friend put it best...'a drivers car is a car with more emphasis on drivers feedback than outright performance on paper' ...the e46 lacks driver feedback if you ask me, and just because the e46 has more hp doesnt help cornering, the e46 is much heavier, and doesnt have the tq. to make up for its weight...it would be a very close little competition with the e46 obviously taking the e36 in the straights...

what do you mean by a drivers car? I find it hard to believe that there would be a track where a 240hp car (with less torque) would be faster than a 333 HP car. The E46 has more torque too than the E36 (262 lbs/ft at 4,900 rpm vs. 236 lbs/ft at 3,800 rpm). The performance differences between the two is quite large - i have driven both extensively. the e36 is a nice car. There is a big difference going to the e46. |

Yes, the problem with the s54 was in rare occasion, but it was quite fatal...you never saw this from either the s50(95 M3) nor the s52(96-99 M3). You are correct there are probably no e46 M3s that are ticking at 100k, my point was that you see e36 M3s that have been mistreated with 100k that still run like a top... ...you saying the e36 M3 was underpowered is like saying the e30 M3 was underpowered, yet if was perfectly balanced...if your all about cruising power then hop in your e46 and enjoy, the e36 has plenty of torque, and matched with the much lighter weight, it doesnt have too hard of time whipping by e46s on the track... the e46 M3 is better than the e36 in many, many ways...but the e36 is still more of a drivers car than the e46, just like the e30 M3 is more of a drivers car than the e36.

I have an E46 - it is a great car (a little heavy). I have 25,000 miles on it and not a single problem. I have one of the first ones that came out (July 2001). The only issues they had were with 2-3 months of production starting in October 2001 (Oktoberfest in Germany - never buy a German car made in October). I dont see how you can say it is not reliable. It is hard to compare 100,000 miles as I am not sure there are many E46's out there with anywhere close to that mileage, they have only been out for 2 years. It is much faster than the E36 and IMO better in every respect. 240HP is not enough for me closer to a 330i in performance. |

well, the e46 is a sweet car, but im still very partial to the e36 M3 for many reasons...im not all down with the new s54 3.2 in the e46, its had way too many problems, while the s50 and s52 have been extremely stong motors with no reliability problems, you see 100k mile e36 m3s that run like they were new. The e46 is also too heavy, like earlier mentioned... e36 M3 all the way... |

Dan... I don't think it feels heavy, I just think it feels like it could use more torque! Especially at lower RPM's!!! HAHA! |

Wyatt, Feels a bit on the heavy side, IMO. Honestly it didn't feel much lighter than the M5, which was kind of shocking, esp. given how light the E36 M3 is. --Dan |

Why don't many people like M3's? Certainly I have not driven many cars hard... But I have driven SL55, CL55, M3's, C43, Alpina Z8, Carrera C4S, etc... And aside from the monetary aspects, the M3 is a GREAT car. It has a superb feeling, great drivability, supberb looks (IMO) and awesome performance... Have many of you driven one? |
