Yeah, it's only 99% of the lawyers that give that other one percent a bad name...
:-)

Seriously looking at that form I have to say I don't qualify. I mean I'm taking my car to get some groceries and visit friend etc. Not just concours or racing. And I would seriously doubt, that some of you guys qualify either.

Obviously nobody would probably ever find out, but all you need is one traffic accident and an overly zealous cop.

See lawyers are good for something! Here's the link to the form:

Just go to the test station and ask for a show/race car exemption form

I keep hearing about these exemptions from you guys, but have no clue on where to find that ominous form. I went to our lovely DOT in the city and asked and they looked at me in utter disbelief. They said the only way out are antiques plates (after 25 years). What gives?

On my '78 they tried just the sniffer test but then insisted on giving it the treadmill test. No way Jose! The guys who were going to do the test looked like they washed out of valet school. I could just see one of those government workers shoving it into reverse instead of where they thought first ought to be and go rocketing out the back door.

So I took the car away and applied for an exemption, which apparently is much more freely given than I thought (thanks Bob C). All I had to do was send in the form and a copy of my insurance policy (which is a collector policy from Hagerty) and I am immune from smog searches and seizures for two years.

The station manager took one look at the 85 308 and said "We'll just do a static test on this one." They just stuck a sensor up the exhaust and checked it while it idled. Great relief! Two more years and I can get collector plates and not have to worry.

When I had my VR6 there, they had trouble with the stick shift and jumped the car out of the rollers, which made me crinch. VW however must have built some strength into it, nothing happened.

So with some anxiety I approached the 'bench' with the Ferrari. The fact, that the tester must just have entered puberty didn't make me feel any better. He greeted me with a friendly "Oh, a Lamborghini!".
Finally they took the car through the test. Twice actually, I think it failed the first go around. I whinced as they run up the revs. But they did a good job all in all. No blunders and I left a relieved customer.

Got four more of these nuisances to go. Then bye bye cats, hello tubi!

Thank Enzo, I have not had anything messed up by them yet, but know people who have. Getting a claim approved is a really bad, you are not filing against the testing contractor, you file a claim with the state.

I just had mine done. I felt very hesitant to allow the operator behind the controls, and he sensed it. While second in line, he started chatting with me about the car, and mentioned how funny it seemed that there had been a lot of great sports cars coming through in the past few days--Vipers, Porsches, even another Ferrari. I sat along side him and made sure he didn't f**k anything up. It made me wonder what their liability is. All in all, he was very respectful.

1985 308 GTSi....I do not dispute the environmental objectves but definitiely question the IM240/dynanometer tests. There have been numerous documented and certainly many unreported incidents of damage to brakes, transmissions and engines directly related to testing procedures. Why should the IEPA require someone other than the vehicle's owner to take control during testing?? This was not the case prior to 1999 ( intro of IM240/dynanometer), and, in my opinion, violates personal property rights. If you are inagreement and/or have further comments, please contact. Thanks---
