Yeah, heard about those guys as well, pretty cool stuff. I pulled once briefly 6 g in a L-39 jet while doing some pretty wild acrobatic stuff. That's when I realized, that my stomach is made for two dimensional rides as opposed for 3D.

If you guys like speed, not to change the subject from land to air, but about 15 years ago i went to an Air Combat school. That was the biggest rush i ever had!! I was able to fly a rea Italian Fight-Bomber Trainer against another person. I'm considering doing it again soon too, now that they travel to different airports. Instead of using real guns, they have lasers and if you hit the other guy in your dog fight, it turns smoke on from his plane. Also, everything is video taped for you too. I have my pilots liscence, but you don't need to have one, you fly with an instructor. He let me have more control of the plane, there was one point the 'G' meter hit 5.5 and the instructor broke the fight off before we blacked out!! It was an amazing rush!! The web site is : http://www.aircombat.com Just thought i would throw that in there for you guys looking for rushes!!! The only negative thing i would have to say about it, i had a back ache for about three days after that and i felt about 2 inches shorter too... haha, But i would do it again, it was very awsome!! They have been to Palwaukee Airport, Waukeegan Airport and i think either Midway and or Kankakee Airport too, they have the schedule on thier web site..

Aaron, yes you get some good sensation of speed. For me it is all about getting a sense of what it feels like. And these 550 HP normally asperated single seaters are very heavy. You feel the weight of the car. Unlike a F1 (which I drove at another occasion in Europe) it is not very nimble and 'quick'. It is a heavy sucker with nice power. Driving in an oval of course is a whole different experience to begin with. Especially in a heavy banked one like the Joliet Speedway. I have driven in the old Chicago speedway, which was shorter and very flat with only slightly banked curves. In Joliet you really felt the banking and had a sensation for being very low in the turn vs all the way up to the wall. Driving101 keeps the speed the same to make it easier on the drivers. Personally that went against whatever I learned before and my instincts: You think you're way to fast going into the turn (you're not of course) and you're way to slow on the straight (you are). So I bent the rules of the game and kind played with the gas (you're not supposed to do that) catching my instructor on the straight and letting him go a bit in the turns. It was also fun watching the other 'teams' on the track. Once we kinda got closer to another tandem team actually had to brake a bit to keep the distance and at one point we were overtaking by the tandem car going high and fast. Bottom line is: No it is not racing. Yes, it is definitely worth the money and it is a great experience. |

I've been wanting to do something like that for a while but they really don't come near here. Fontana would be great track to do that. Andreas is there a good sensation of speed? I'm curious to hear what the experience is like. |

Check out www.driving101.com. They are coming to the Joliet speedway over the first August weekend. I have signed up for the Racing 100 experience for 2pm on Sunday afternoon. Six laps in an Indycar replicar. Would be cool if we had a few more takers from here. I have done this before btw with the same company, when they were running it at the Chicago Speedway in Cicero. Those were CART replicars and it was a lot of fun and very interesting. Glad I did that while we still had that track. Bob will be the official photographer. Also hope to get a shot of our cars in the infield of the oval, hehe. |
