Frank, See the attached pics. You may want to consider what I did to enhance the sound system in my 308GTS QV. First change the door speakers to up to date units. Second, use a compact subwoofer system. Mine is a Sansui unit measuring only 12"x8"x4". It is a model SAW-400A and has a 5" subwoofer, built in amp, adjustable gain, phase, and cross-over controls. I ordered it from JC Whitney a few years ago, and cost $75. It's not mounted, I just place it between the console and the roof cover when I am going to use it. I may mount it in the passenger footwell, but I will need to devise some quick disconnect brackets (note the box is supporting it while I take the photo). I don't know if Whitney still offers it, it does a nice job, without over doing it.

V1 is simply the best. Has saved me a few times so far. Gives its warning way ahead with enough stopping time. Even helped me once with instant-on radar where you're normally powerless: Got an instant-on chirp, slowed down, came over the crest of the hill and looked right into a radar gun pointing at me. But the car ahead of me, for which my alarm briefly beeped, was enough warning to me. V1 works nicely in our cars as it can look right through the back window. Would never leave home without it for long distance driving. I have been grounded once for a month, don't want to have that happen again. |

How do you like the V1 ? I was considering getting one. read a post in the General discussion. And heard all good about it. Last night, had the Ferrari out for a moonlit drive out west (I live about 1 mile due east of the Yorktown Mall where we met last week) And,on the way back home, driving eastbound,on Butterfield Rd. Rt.56, around 9:00PM, I had a teenage girl in a Grand Am in front of me. 3 lanes. We were in the inside lane. 45 mph. And,I was being a good boy, doing the limit. She took off from the light thats by the Hooters (where we should have gotten onto I-88) going real fast. Then, sitting in the center median, facing traffic, was a Lombard cop. As I passed him,he put on his lights, and got onto the roadway, and turned around to go eastbound. I wasn't nervous,as,I WAS doing the speedlimit and had my seatbelt on.But...you STILL get that "sinking feeling" I went over to the center lane, and sure enough,he drove right past me and pulled her over. But,I knew he was probably thinking,"I bet I scared that guy in the red Ferrari!" No. I knew I was legal. But...for those rare times that I'm not...want to get a V1. How's it worked out for you ? |

I think the original radio config was the dealer's choice. So Blaupunkt and Alpine are probably very close. I think mine had a Blaupunkt in it. Was crap though. The electrical system in my QV so far hasn't let me down. It also powers now the V1 for which I tapped into one of the lines. Planning already on the next install, which will be a GPS. |

My wife has a (girl) cousin that just graduated from DePaul school of law a couple of years ago. And she works at a firm downtown, that specializes in the Entertainment and Music fields.( Copyrights, and stuff.) And,I do agree with you regarding keeping my car as original as possible, too. (Absolutely-NO CUTTING!) But,I am going to do what I can to better my sound system, without hurting the car. All stuff that can be removed. Also, agree with the cars electrical system as being somewhat primitive(scary?) But,not too bad. My car came with an Alpine unit.(It broke) And,I have since replaced it with a Blaupunkt. What kind of stereo came with these cars as OE ? Can they be found,I wonder? Also, does anyone know how much a 308GTSi cost brand new in 1981 ? And,what,if any, options were available? (or did they pretty much all come with the same equipment?) |

Wow - lots of memories. Frank, my firm concentrates in Commercial Litigation primarily. Sometimes I would like to have a radio in the car, but since it didn't have one when I got it I'm not going to mess with it. If it did have a radio when I got it I certainly would not have removed it. I'd draw a very hard line at doing anything which changes the car in any way. No drilling, special brackets, nada. And I'd be concerned that the funky primitive 308 electrical system could handle lots of watts. Sounds like a future unpleasant smokey meltdown (which is a band I saw in the 70's). That 70's band banter was cool. My first concert was Boston in '76 at the Amphitheatre. I have a couple of Chicago bands who are friends/clients of mine now. |

yeah...I mostly like the "hard stuff". We met Alice Cooper at his restaraunt,Cooperstown in Phoenix,Az., last summer .Got some pictures of us with Alice. And,I definitely LOVE the Joe Satriani type stuff, too. We saw him at House of Blues a couple years back. Saw Steve Vai there, too. I managed to save most of my concert ticket stubs since about 1981. I had saved most of them from my first concert in 1974 (Bad Company opening up for Black Oak Arkansas at the Auditorium Theatre, downtown. Tickets were $5.50,$6.50,and $7.50 back then!) Also saw Steppenwolf(original lineup) with Canned Heat(Bear was still alive and singing) and ,an opening band...never heard of them before...from Canada, some band called RUSH.(look where they went from there!)Plus, probably well over a hundered other concerts from '74-'81.Remember all of those concerts at old Comiskey Park? Journey,Aerosmith,etc... I saved most of the ticket stubs. Mom accidentally threw them away!!So,now all I have are from '81 to now. I don't get out to concerts as much as I used to,bad back and all.We just saw the Scorpions and Whitesnake at Allstate Arena, this past year. But,if there is someone I like that comes to the House of Blues,I try to go,because that place is great for a concert. Really small and you can get pretty close and see really good. I remember seeing Foghat and Bob Seeger at the old Chicago Stadium, don't exactly remember the year '75,'76,'77-? But,there was a sound board set up where our seats were supposed to be. So,the head usher signed our ticket stubs and told us "Go anywhere you want. If anyone hassles you, show them your signed stub!" THat was very cool. Went right up in front of the first row! Man,I could go on for hours reminiscing about the concerts that I went to...but won't. One of my younger brothers who lives in Phoenix,AZ.just saw the Sex Pistols at a small venue in Tempe, this past Monday night. He's in a wheelchair from an accident, and got up to the front. He got a whole camera load(27 pix) of shots of Johnny Rotten and the boys. I have an uncle thats in his mid fifties, that told me that he saw Led Zeppelin at a place called "the Kinetic Playground" in the late '60's,for $1.50! Also saw Janis Joplin,Jimi Hendrix there,at other times! I coud go on and on and on and... Bet you guys all have some good stories to tell, too! |

While I agree with most of you, that when driving your Ferrari hard, music is nothing but a distraction from the engine sound. However don't you guys ever go for boring long hour drives? I mean just going to Blackhawk for racing was a total bore (not the racing, the commute). An hour of freakin' highway traffic. I need something to string me along for that. Going to Indy I'll face the same boredom again, but this time twice as long. That's why I have a MP3 player with all my favourite songs in random mode. |

If you're into metal or rock, you may like my CD that I just completed. Its instrumental guitar ala Joe Satriani with some jazzy fusion influences thrown in. Just got 1000 replicated. Next time we go for a ride, I'll bring some along. Anyway, I replaced the stereo in my 308 with an Alpine FM/CD/MP3 player 60 watts per channel, and the speakers in the doors with Sony 50 watt 2-way XPlode speakers. No cutting, just took the door panels off to replace the speakers. Sounds great and ballsy enough unless you have the top off and are going 140 MPH. Then you have to crank it but the wind is so loud and the thrill and all, that you forget about the music. But my referral is CNA Audio/Video. They specialize in high-end home theater design and installation, but Craig Eggert from there has done numerous cars on the side, including mine, and I'm happy. His number is 630-336-7442. Located in Aurora. Tell him I sent you. He can design a system based on your budget and needs, with additional speakers, amps, mounting, etc., or you can bring him the components and he can just do the labor. |

Frank- Your taste in music is like mine, heavy metal and hard rock. The rest I'm not interested in, except the occasional classical montage. Trust me, don't throw money into the sound system in your 308; it will never pay for itself, cause you'll rarely use it!

Frank- Don't waste your money, you'll probably never have the radio on. I've put $$$ sound systems in some of my other F-cars. Money wasted; I rarely turn the sound systems on! |

Thats funny you said that,Bob. Because,to be honest with you, I really don't listen to the radio hardly at all when I am driving my Ferrari-just love to listen to the sound of the engine purring! But,once in a while... I do like to listen to some tunes. I suppose that what I have is really adequete...maybe a couple more speakers and a small amp should do it,like Tod and Andreas said. But,sometimes I just get in the mood to CRANK IT UP! I wasn't always a big old fat guy, with short hair. Used to be rail thin ,with hair halfway down my back, and a fu-manchu,(think,"Spinal Tap") I can show you some pictures from my younger days, when I played guitar in a metal band,(late '70's,early '80's),that,If my mother-in-law saw...(need I say more?) But,on occasion, would like to be able to blast the tunes. Depends on the mood I am in. I have a pretty eclectic music collection.Just about everything,(NO RAP,OR HIPHOP)Lots of 60's,70's,80's,hard rock, metal, jazz, smooth jazz,BLUES,reggae, swing,MOTOWN,you name it! Even some Classical, for driving through the Arboretum in the fall. |

Hmmmm.....mine doesn't. As a first point, I would strongly dissuade you from doing what you described. I think original cars are the way to go and yours is very very nice. That being said, I hear excellent things about Abt in Niles. |

Guys, just replace the Blaupunkt with a good FM/CD/MP3 player. Then replace the stock speakers in the door with some modern two way speakers. Finally add a small amp to it (put it on the gear center console) and hide the bass booster behind the passenger foot wall. Works great. Other setups I've seen had the amp against the engine wall, but my bling bling shop advised against it because of the heat build up. No cutting needed for anything. However: If you really want to get some decent sound out of your speakers (I'm talking 308 here, dunno about the 328), then remove the leather cover over them in the door panel. That really muffles the sound. |

I'm going to probably put my own stereo in, too many horror stories from different people going to have car stereos put in... Shouldn't be too difficult, my 328 i believe has 5.25" speakers in the doors and two small tweeters in the dash. What about adding speakers in the headrests?? You may also get a low profile subwoofer to fit under the seats too??? |

Like has already been mentioned by Tod in another thread,I want to upgrade the stereo in my 308,too. But...NO cutting! Do any of you guys know of a good stereo shop that can do this? I have a nice Blaupunkt CD in there, now, with 210 watts. BUT,small speakers. Would like to maybe put in an amp.,and some bigger speakers. but, without cutting. Was thinking about having a custom Red fiberglas enclosure...something along the lines of the center "waterfall" in the C5 Vettes. I could put it behind the seats, with a bulge in the middle, and a couple of big speakers in it,maybe a sub woofer somwhere, too. And,take it out if I wanted to. Attach it to the points where the targa top cover connects-? Right now, just have the 2 speakers in the "stock" area behind the driver and passenger, and 2 small little tweeters in the doors(like that when I bought it.)I am looking for BIG,DEEP,BASS sound-not like a ghetto Escalade,or anything, just some balls! Anyone know of such a place? close by?(western 'burbs) And,not wanting to charge my "good" leg for it! THANKS!!! |
