I am thinking of this for my winter storage :
And then put my 328 in it, hook it up to my truck and drive down to Florida. Then remove my 328 and drive it all over down there. Thats what i'm looking at for Winter storage...

Thanks,Sindo. But,my barber just moved down to the Boca area, and made me that same offer. I WAS going to go down to Scottsdale/Phoenix for the winter, until my 12 year old daughter decided that she wanted to live with Dad instead of Mom. Which is great with me. But,I really was envisioning driving all of those great roads out there, for overnight trips to Vegas,L.A.,SanDiego,etc... But,my kid comes first. I can only hope for a mild winter! And,I can always do the southwest thing in a few years,no big deal. |

Yeah,I supppose you could be right. But,as I already said,I have been driving it year 'round. Except in rain, snow,or excessive salt on the road.I do drive my fiberglas 'Vette in the rain, and winter,as long as the roads are clear. You CANNOT get ANY traction with those wide tires! But,I'd like to keep the Ferrari as nice as I can. I bought it in '01,and it is an '81. It was absolutely flawless when I bought it. Recently serviced,14,250 miles. So,I want to continue keeping it in that condition...nothing wrong with that. I have ALWAYS kept all of my cars as clean and kept up as possible. Even the "work beaters" that I owned when I was younger. I had a buddy who always bought a brand new pick-up truck, and prided himself with how long he could go with out washing it. Yeah, pretty stupid, right? He ended up dying of stupidity.(had alot of medical problems...puked blood all the time, had a very big, deep sore that wouldn't heal for a year, drank a case or more of beer every day. Super high blood pressure. Always looked "purple", Smoked 2-3 packs of cigs a day.We kept telling him to see a doctor, but he wouldn't. One day, when he was 36 years old,he dropped dead. The doctors said that had he come in for a check-up sooner, like we kept telling him to do,he'd still be alive today. STUPID!) Anyway,I'll continue keeping my car as a museum piece, just in case the Smithsonian ever wants to display a 308,and they're all beat,or neglected,or...i'll still have mine( -just kidding!) But,it really doesn't take a whole lot of effort to keep it clean, and polished, and waxed,and.... |

Frank, you're right about the paint. Older 308's seem to have a reputation for crazing and temprature differences may account for that. BUT...it's a car and not a museum piece (yet!). My fiberglass Europa has it's share of stress cracks too but driving it is way more fun than staring at it...although I like that too!! |

Yes,actually I HAVE been driving it year 'round. But,at my previous home, had an attached, heated garage. I only took it out on clean,(NO SALT!!!),dry streets. But,my Ferrari really LOVES the cold air! My only concern is the fragile,22 year old lacqeur paint. It's already started crazing and checking a little. And,I thought that maybe that had something to do with very cold weather-no? I thought that the metal, when it gets very, very cold,"contracts",albeit a little bit, thus causing the checking and crazing in the paint.I think I heard or read that someplace, somewhere, sometime. But,if it's not true, guess I don't have anything to worry about. |

Frank, an unattached, unheated garage is fine. I drive my Lotus year round; only when the streets are wet do I take the Honda. My garage is attached but also unheated and it dips below freezing inside. Your car and you will be much happier if you drive it year round. Just be sure to warm it up! I think you'll find the car will last a lot longer if you don't store it for several months every year. |

I'm not even sure our garage is heated or not, it certainly is damned cold in the winter, but that doesn't bother the car a bit. Just run it regularly and it won't need any winter precautions. I always snicker at the 911 with its battery charging power line sticking out while my baby snarls out for a quick jab along the frozen Lake Shore. |

Frank- Don't be so concerned about finding temp. controlled storage, just find storage! I have my Rolls stored in non-temp areas for years, and no ill effects. |

P.S.-Yes,Andreas,My barber just moved to Florida and made that EXACT SAME offer! If it were up to me,I'd be spending winters in Phoenix/Scottsdale,AZ., Which is what WAS my plan. But,now my 12 year old daughter came to live with us,(problems with her mom,my ex.)So,I have to stay here for the winter, now |

I am going to look around my neighborhood, too. Actually, now that you mention it(Private garage) There is an old lady that lives right across the street from me that lives alone (her daughter lives on the next block and visits almost daily to check up on her) And,she only has 1 car,but a two car,ATTACHED garage. And,she really likes me,because one time I caught, and saved one of her small dogs that ran away from her,and every time I see her and talk to her,she always brings that up,and how she'll never forget that.(What can I say,I was a Boy Scout!) Anyway,I will check with her. But,do remember my Insurance man frowning about storing the Ferrari at a private residence. I would REALLY prefer a heated, alarmed, secure warehouse that is specifically used for vehicle storage, close by. Or,what the hell. Maybe I can get my car repainted(lots of crazing and checking, anyway) and that will solve 2 problems! |

Frank, Can't help you in the southwest area but you might try "Prancing Horse Stable" which is owned by FCA member, Thor Torger. It's located off the Kennedy next to Park Ridge 773-775-9010. No affiliation, just a suggestion..... Dave |

Any leads, tips, info. as to where I might find a nice, clean, safe, secure, heated winter storage in the Western Suburbs ? I moved to a house with an unattached ,unheated garage, this past year, and need to find a spot to safely store my 308,probably only Nov.,Dec.,Jan., & Feb.(maybe even part of March) Thanks for any help ! Prefer not to use a private residence.(Insurance man said,"No.") |
