These cars deserve high speed, but i have grown increasingly reluctant to open up on highways in the US, even where the sailing is "clear." For a number of reasons, not the least of which are legal repercussions, liability, risk of injury to others, etc. I don't condemn any of you for letting it whallop at speeds well in excess of 100mph, but on the east coast, at least, its just asking for trouble. (Desert driving may be different, i don't know how much tolerance the cops have out in the middle of nowhere:-from what i gather, in some places you are on Indian land, and their cops have jurisdiction). Although i was never a trackmeister, i am going in that direction to get my kicks.

But wait till November I will get my 512TR!!!

wolfgang,

that must have been 4th gear!
last time i redlined my baby on a german autobahn, i marked slightly more than 275 kph (170 mph), roof open, the girl sitting on the passenger seat was so impressed that she forgot to take a picture!

Maximum speed limit on the fastest roads here in South Australia is 110kmph (68mph), however I did cruise along an interstate country highway at 190kmph (118mph) a few years back in my old E-class.

Weird, Dom, as I was doing about 105 and asked the other half how fast she thought I was going. She said "Maybe 80". She was shocked when I told her.

Faisal- backing off 90mph to jump into a 70mph corner (most likely marked 30mph :-) in a capable car on a back-road is something everyone should do or ride shotgun for at least once!

I'm actually normally a rather sane driver, 80-110 on the freeway tops, usually do what the flow of traffic is doing. (then again, maybe not so sane, as my car TOPED out at 130. It was a momentum car :P) but get me on 128 West out of Healdsburg, and it's hours of fun untill the coast! Man that road is fun.

For a treat; here's a video of *ahem* "someone" driving my car up our 2 mile streatch of "test corse" that my buddy and I use when we fsck with our suspensions and want to see if it worked.

http://www.cartsys.com/fiero/movie/fiero-testcourse-RF.mov
http://www.cartsys.com/fiero/movie/fiero-testcourse-RR.mov

(try playing both of 'em at the same time! They're different runs, but close.)

I will have to join you next time, though it will likely be as a passanger untill I get off my duff, make some money, and get me an F355 ;)

Remenber, CHP choppers top out at 90KIAS!

I'm sure Evan is quoting speed in KPH not MPH as he lives in the Great Frozen North according to his profile. MPH is 5/8 of KPH

Chris,
my buddies and I do formation flying with the TVR, a couple of motorbikes, a couple of Esprits, some P-cars, a Viper, Countach, etc. It is unbelievable! Typically 80mph curves and 140-160mph on the straights.

I finally got to fly down the highway with someone in a car the same level as mine to make it fun!! As I pulled onto I80 in my IS300, this black maxima started to tail me as I passed someone in the left lane doing approx. 80mph. I usually never see anyone on that stretch of highway that I was on go fast, but as I pulled to the right to let the maxima pass me, he rips me up. I noticed two younger guys sittin in it smilin and waving me on. So for about 20 miles, me and these guys averaged about 130 mph, weaving perfectly. It felt like synchronized swimming. At one point I actually fishtailed a bit doing 115 (talk about scary)! It was truly the most exhilarating thing I've done in a while (that is, since I lost my lisence for the first time for doin 135mph).

C

PS. I finally maxed out the IS!! 155mph baby!

In the Saab or the Alfa, I can cruise at 90-100 mph with no complaints from the wife.

But, in the GT4, I start going over 60 mph, and she starts yelling at me to slow down. I guess it just feels fast.

I don't think to many of us who own F-cars can get on the open road & do the speed limit on a regular basis. For me on the free way if I have a mile or so I like to ring her out threw 4th to 7 grand+ 140 mph and just into 5th. I like to cruise at 110 to 130mph in OD at night in my carefully selected side fenced areas with no on or off ramps. Day time traffic stays around 80+mph and I hang in the center of it all.

Chris > no i didn't rice it out. ive been thinking of adding some stuff to it to get the acceleration a bit faster but i think im just going to save for something faster from the get-go

its a 99, i figured the governer would hit around 160 or so, but ive been able to push it up to 200. never over that though, i always run out of room.

and yea..the 0-60 is incredibly slow ;)

No worries guys. We just do short bursts to "clean out" everything. Colorado DOES have overzealous highway patrolmen so one must always be on the lookout. Our problem is that our chosen form of transportation is more NOTICABLE than some 6,000 lb. SUV barreling down the highway at 90mph. I feel much safer, with or without pee wee, in my 308.

John,

Don is correct. All it takes is an over-zealous cop and they will call the child people on you. That said, I have taken my kids up to 120, that was a couple years ago, and I do not do it anymore -- 80 max is the way to go. In short, while fun, it just didn't feel right going that fast with a kid in the car.

As for cruising speed - hit 110 today as normal for my blow out run -- felt real nice at 5750 rpms in 4th. Could have made 6800 and 130+ mph but decided not too. But cruise on highway at 75 - 80. Not worth the tickets.

Be careful John - the government tried to take a woman's children away recently because they got sunburned, so if you get tagged doing 100+ with your kid in the car some overeager cop might have child protective services show up and take your kid away.......

Dave,
Thus far my driving record has been clean in terms of accidents and i've been driving for 12 years. And trust me, i've done things that are a tad bit more distracting while driving... trust me.

Steve,
Yea, it is an Alfa. I got the picture, however, from my friend Omar aka AuraRaptor. I'm pretty sure the majority are in museums, however, I do know that a few of them have not been found.

Evan,
How in gods name did you get your Jetta to do 160?? I used to have one and it maxed out at about 125 with a 0-60 of a whopping 15s. Did you rice yours?

On highways in the NY tri-state area i rarely go over 65, since im never really in a rush to go some place. Even on my daily commute on 684 i dont really go mcuh more than 65, although once or twice i tested my old car's speed limiter on that road. it worked.

Rte 684 in Westchester is the Indy 500 of the NY area. Very few cars, very few cops, most people dpoing 80-85 during rush hour (women putting on makeup, talking on the cell phone and eating a bagel while doing 85), I usually work late so whenever I take the spider to work I hit 100-110 going home about 10 PM. Virtually empty road, but I keep the v-1 on anyway. Occasionally get to play with a P-car or a rice burner for a few miles.
Have done "125" in the dino but the speedo is so inaccurate I have no idea what the real speed was.

Officer, this Ferrari only travels 55mph... 65mph if posted so on the freeway.

The recent laser traffic ticket for allegedly travelling 101mph in a 55mph zone is naturally debatable in a court of law as such devices can be faulty.

Enjoy the Drive,

Different Marquee: Saab; the poor man's near-lux. Cruise at 85. Occasionally do 120 without complaint.

Well, there is 1 complaint... Marquee Emblem is a Griffin, not a Cavallino Rampante.

Halloween '03 was good, as there were @ 2 dozen cars doing 100 from my exit (that evening) at Malibu Canyon Rd. on 101 to sights of the upcoming 405. Plenty of space between all the drivers, nobody was gaming or passing. Just chillin' at the Century mark before the witching hour.

In and around Los Angeles, 80-90mph, outside 90-100mph. 90mph is the sweet spot. Silky smooth up to the fuel cutoff (140mph).

I think I'm going usually somewhere between 50 to 100 miles. Honestly I don't intentionally go to 100 miles, but after keep passing slow cars in front of me, I notice going to 100 so I always slow down after that.
