Ben, your pics are awesome as ever, buddy. It was great hanging out with you. Great run down to Los Gatos. Brian, good to hang our with you briefly at concorso. Probably see you again soon at one of the HMB breakfasts. Lawwdog, it was nice meeting you finally. You have a lovely car. I see that Ferrari fever sparkle in your eyes. You're so lucky your wife shares your passion for cars. Tariq and Michael W.: Great run down 17 and 1. I was impressed that we were able to catch up to Ben Lobenstein. Ben, In Palo Alto, on University Ave., there's a smaller bookstore next to the Borders that has some amazing photography exhibitions. The one right now has really good black and whites as well as colours. Let me know when you are going to be in this area next, and we can go together. | ||

Faisal- all great advice! Bit of a story nobody wants to hear: I (quite on purpose) never took a formal photography or cinematography class, and while I acknowledge they do help the art, it's something very personal and close to me, and has to come 'un-guided' if you will, or it wouldn't be fun. (note: everybody is different! Most will benefit.) I perfer to pick things up along the way, usually from real photographers, and incorporate them into my 'style' if you will. One good solid is the rule of thrids (and knowing, or guessing and getting lucky, when to break the rules is always where the fun stuff happens!) In very general terms, I try to put onto film the magic I feel in a place. The harmony in lines, the dimentionality and tactility I see in space, etc. Therefore, most of my composition tends to exagerated or at least highlighted perspectives, odd views, and converging/diverging lines. I'm a total slut for landscapes too! Favourite line in a song I heard on the radio the other day "I remenber, Stormy weather, the way the sky looks when it's cold." You and I need to get us a pair of Medium (or even better!) LARGE Format 8x10" cameras, and just goof around with 'em. Man I love those things. PS: I've *always* enjoyed your pictures a great deal. Ben, In my high-school photography class, I was taught to go for the low-angle and ground-level shots too. 3/4 views of the flank are also nice. Diagonals create drama and motion, but can distort proportion, so you should try to get a reference object near the back so that viewers get a sense of the scale. And if you get a fence or something, try to find a line that leads the eye to the subject. It's harder on the track, where you are trying to capture detail on the car and not lose the sensation of motion. Low pit lane walls tend to lead the eye away from the cars racing right next to them, so I try to keep them out of the shot, unless they are leading you to the person waving the checkered flag as the car is crossing--that's a tough shot to get. I have forgotten most of the other stuff, and can't be bothered to fiddle with settings to optimize my shots. Digital cameras allow you to take so many, you can just throw out the ones you don't want, and still be left with a healthy selection. One of these days, I am going to read the manual, and then maybe I can take the chrome effect or blue-sky or sunset shots that calendars have. I think your pics are great! | ||

Mario- Heh, somebody's gotta keep all the gunk burnt out! I'm looking forward to getting a quicker car too, so I can keep up with some of the other drivers out there tearing it up! Belive it or not, just my trusty Canon S230 digital! It's just about perfect for a digital camera, small enough that I have it with me, and decent quality. Everything else I shoot on 35mm, but find I rarely have the 35 on me. Got to try Norm's D100s, and I've got to confess, it's looking like film might be dead for all but medium and large format (REAL photography! I lust after a Hasselblad H1 *big* time (kind of an SLR for med-format!) Most of the magic and atmosphere you see is from the cars and the setting. Man was it beautiful, the early morning mist and the dawn sun dukeing it out! I've been on this kick lately with the ground-level shots of cars. I just think they look amazingly poised, mean, and romantic that way somehow. Appologies if I over-do it Best! Ben. | ||

Ben, Nice Shots... I was there too. In fact, my 355 is parked behind Norman's 360. Norman's car got more pictures taken of it than most cars out there. Norman is a class act...not that I thought he wouldn't be. I'm sure there were more people from this board there but I didn't get to meet everyone. I met the guy who own's the green 02 456 parked on the other side of my 355. He's got an 04 yellow spider on order....must be nice. | ||

To make a long story short, I saw the 288GTO up close and personal for the first time in my life. I am head over heels in love. I filled the CF card on the camera. If there were a cup nearby, it'd likely be on it's way there too... Withought furthur musings, here are the early cut of pics I thought were neat, enjoy and cue the music! Super Stud Norm, his "Teenage Son" 360, and "Grand Dady Can Still Swing" 288GTO! Surely, this must be how the streets of heaven are paved!  Super-Hot 550, Super-Hot coastal setting, Super-Hot forground...  Enzo looking pretty good in person.  F40, straight from dream-land, mystery-fog still tendriliscious! <smacks lips!>  |
