The QP is going to have auto as the default. Manual shifting will have to be engaged. How many of you have driven the new QP?

Eric is correct. The triptonic in my wife's Cayenne Turbo is buttery smooth and fully accessable from the stick and the steering wheel.

David, there is indeed a fully automatic setting for the F1 (just press a button). But what I believe Jim is saying is that it does not compare at all to the buttery smooth automatics seen in todays 4-door luxo-cruisers.

As a current owner of a Maser coupe, and very recent owner of a MB coupe, I have to agree. I hardly ever use my F1 in auto-mode in part because of how poorly it performs. It short-shifts you to 6th gear by the time you are at 40 mph, and the downshifting can be very jerky at speed. At any time, you can manually select a gear by flipping the paddles, but you will quickly find yourself fighting the car, pretty damn annoying. Since its a coupe, and I am a fan of the F1 (manual sport mode), this is not an issue for me. But it could be an issue for sedan drivers, particularly MB potential converts.

That said, the Maser F1 has improved over the last 12 months, and they say that the QP version will have an auto mode that is greatly improved even over today. That is an easy claim to make, and for the QPs sake, I hope Maser is correct. I guess we will have to wait it out.

How bad of an oil leak and what else should I be looking for besides the obvious oil stains on the garage floor if any ?

It will come with an auto mode BUT IMHO a 4 door luxury coupe needs a super smooth 6 speed auto trans like the P triptronic or the BMW auto. An F1 auto will get old in bumper to bumper midtown traffic.

Jim, I don't get it does'nt every F1 comes with an Auto mode just like the coupe. If not you are right it does not make sense.

Mine continues to rock on. That said it's still overpriced. My wife's Cayanne turbo is much more car for the same $. Also some totally unacceptable things remain such as mine has started leaking oil at 2500 miles. They'll fix it but that's stupid. Btw the quattro with only an F1 and no auto is also Very stupid.

Morrie- I agree: I buy to own and drive (and drive good and hard), not to re-sell.

I also get attached to things; was wrenching to sell my very first car a few mos. ago. She was good to me...

I think the fact that no one knows much about these cars, and for that matter what they are worth is causing the prices on 02's to be where thet are. Another thing to keep in mind the 03 spider had a suspension upgrade. If you get the chance drive an 02 then an 03, huge difference.

I think once the four door hits the market and they better establish themselves in the market things will change. Then again I never expect not to lose money on a car.

Needing some inspiration to work hard, I stopped by Ferrari/Maserati New England last night after shopping and did some looking. It was after hours but they had left 2 Maser Coupes outside. I've seen them before at other dealers/car shows but you're right, pictures don't really do it justice. The back end especially, which isn't 360 gorgeous but much more presentable than pictures imply (I thought before the general shape of the rear looked too much like a Chevy Monte Carlo's, and not 360/575M graceful).

But I could see myself buying one... especially because it would resolve the whole baby seat issue, for even less than a 456.

It is unfortunate they're depreciating on eBay so fast, though. Good for me eventually, but reflects poor customer awareness... or brand inconfidence (due to inexperience).

Larry:
We do live very close to each other. I picked up my car yesterday, brought a friend with me, he test drove a Maserati spider and bought it. I think the reason for all the good deals (my car was their demo had just about every option you could get) is that not many people seem to know alot about these cars. I took my coupe out yesterday on the same backroads I take my 360 on and I was very surprised, its no 360 but alot close than I thought it would be.

Everyone at Algar have always given me great service, and they gave my friend a pretty good deal on the spider he bought yesterday. Just my opinion but there is not any other car I rather have under $100,000. Algar only has three left in stock, they seem to be selling there pretty well.

ELI, more curious than anything else. While my stable is far less impressive than many (most?) others here, I think I'm at my current limits with my wife driving a 1991 Previa minivan with 155k miles and me driving a 512TR, 993 and S4. The tolerance of even exceptionally understanding and tolerant wives should not be unduly tested, IMHO. Larry

Morrie, Congratulations. Is it the "Verde Goodwood" still pictured on Algar's site? I'm not sure I noticed it when I had my car serviced at Algar a few weeks ago. (I believe I'm not too far from you -- Chestnut Hill area, and take my son a few blocks from Harts Lane/Cherrydale during the week.) I am surprised that Algar gave you a good deal -- my impression is that they charge top dollar for at least their used cars (which are in tip-top shape). I suspect the deal you got is a reflection of generally disappointing Maserati sales, no? Larry

I have been driving my Coupe daily for 9 months now and I love it more and more as I get used to it. I was chatting with the service manager of Ferrari of LI telling him that sometimes the car scares me because it has so much power and it is the fastest car I ever owned. He told me that that engine generates more than 425 HP but they do not advertise that instead they say it has 390 HP. I believe him without a doubt. One has to drive one for a while to realize that. Greatest performing car for the money on the market today. Period.

Eric,

I believe you meant 4 years/50,000 miles on the warranty. If not, feel good, you have 10,000 miles more warranty on your Spyder than you realized.

"the Mas sounds better than anything else I own"

Alex, do you have a tubi or the like on your Mas? We put a tubi on ours and love the sound, but some might find it too much.

My wife and I used to take the Mas instead of the 360, thinking the Mas would attract less attention. Wrong, I'm afraid, people seem to love the car.

From what I have been told, the Maserati is pretty much the same as any car on the road, no major service issues. I'm going to use it as a daily driver (except when the snow comes) and considering the 4yr/50,000 mile warranty I assume Ferrari built it pretty well.

Just in case anyone cares about these things, the Mas sounds better than anything else I own, when downshifting in Sport mode. It does a perfect double clutch downshift in less than 50 ms and it sounds like you're Fangio hurtling round the 'Ring.
You have to drive it to believe just how good this car is! And for the money there is nothing even close.
Given the choice whether to take the Modena or the Mas, the Mas gets the nod almost every time.

I am not Morrie, but I am about to leave work, so I decided to jump in. Please excuse me!

The warranty is 4 years, 40,000 miles. It does not include routine maintenance, but does include the engine, transmission, and electronics (and perhaps some other bits). And yes, cambiocorsa just means the car has F1, and does not include any other options. Hope this helps...

Thanks Eric. That sounds great.

But there's that moral question - would I pine for years for an F-car, then not buy one for a different make (although hey, it's built BY Ferrari), when I'm spending the same?

Morrie - What is the warranty like on the car and is it maintenance free for any period of time? Does the cambiocorsa just signify the F-1 gear box? I would consider one of these - probably a convertible to replace my E46 M3 Convert. when the time comes. There aren't as many maserati's as BMW's, Mercedes etc. Something different, something unique, something italian

Ryan. The back seats in the Maser each come with brackets/thingies that allow a baby seat to be anchored (2 baby seats). You can't see them or feel them when sitting, but they are indeed nestled within the folds. My dealer offered to remove them upon delivery, but kids might be in order 5-ish years from now so I kept them. I saw a subtle smile form on my girlfriend's mouth when I gave my salesguy the instructions.

The back seat is also quite usable for schlepping people, as long as they are toward the petite side. But since the trunk is so small, the car isn't the best choice for hauling 4 people on a weekend getaway.

Morrie, thanks for the referral; but I'm about 34 months away from buying my next car (just starting law school - and just bought a WRX 3 weeks ago). I guess I'll just let the '03 Maseratis depreciate a little first ;-).

I've seen the Spyder and Coupes on several occasions, but was just wondering (since you've obviously been around them the past few days)- is the back "seat" at least big enough for a baby car seat? No reason yet, but might have to consider that option by then...

Great car! My wife actually wants a Maserati Spyder over an F-car when the time comes (of course, being a girl, what she *really* wants is a VW). I would get either titanium or black on bordeaux leather...

I remember seeing an hour-long interview of Luca di Montemazolo (sp?) on Charlie Rosen a few months back - he said his daily drivers were a new Maserati and a 575M. He went off about how he loved the front-engined Ferraris more (hence the heavy influence in their company direction). He's one of the few rich/powerful that looks stylin' with a mullet-esque hairstyle (PM of Japan too :-)).

I recently sold my 996tt, great car but in my opinion, not enough driver feedback, no way an adult can fit in the back seat, and my wife was scared of it (heavily modified) The CL is a nice car, but feels just the the S500 to me, the jag is quick, but not F1, and not much feeback, maybe just my opinion, but none of the other cars brought out the emotional response. The 03 has an upgrade to the F1, and it seems to be the best working in any car I've driven. I'm picking her up this weel, will post pics asap.

I had a ride in 03 Maserati coupe from FOD to my house, and it was really nice. Car was yellow, and it looked sharp for a sedan. It was w/ F1 paddle, and I didn't noticed any indifference from automatic. Must be the driver, I thought. Could be the car, I am thinking after reading this post. (Mike, I'm kidding)

We have an 02 Spyder which recently had all of the 03 upgrades installed (F1, Radio, Nav screen, Suspension, Shocks etc etc) all under warranty and without us asking. A class act!
The F1 is really superb now and shifts better than my 01 360 or my 03 575. The Mas is a lot of fun to drive and I have a tough time prying the keys away from my wife (a reformed SL driver).

Maserati is definitely doing the job right and delivering great cars, especially relative to their price segment competition (SL's, Jag XK8's, 911's).

Morrie,

Congrats. I sold them for a couple of years until recently and could not understand why more people would not even look at them. They are a great driving car. Lots of fun and very uncommon to be seen on the street. 4.7 0-62 and a 175 mph top speed can get your blood pumping pretty good.

Enjoy it for what it is...............

Its the dark green with light interior. Car is still on Algar Ferrari Wedb site, in fact the car is still sitting on their showroom floor. I am bringing this car in to replace my M5 which is a great car but no where near as much fun. I am surprised, that so many people are unaware of this car. I have been talking the car up and already have afew people going to take a look at spiders.

I know this topic has been gone over in the past, but I just thought I'd just give it my two cents.
Was at my local Ferrari dealer weekend before last, and I really took a good look at the new Mareratis. I really did not have much interest in them before, but I should have. First I drove a coupe with the six speed, then I drove the F1, I could not believe how good the F1 works in that car. My 360 is an F1 (my 04 spider will be a gear shift), and in my opinion at least the F1 works far better in the Maserati than in my 360. My dealer gave me a great deal on the Coupe I test drove, car was loaded up, and I pulled the trigger. I looked at the DB7, the CL500, and neither came close, and are both more expensive. It appears the F1 was upgraded in 03 in the Maserati. If you have not driven one, I'd advise a test drive, I think you will be impressed, and from what I gather there are some good deals to be had, at least from my dealer.
