Ernesto,

To each their own. I know when I was looking for a 360 the service records from an FNA authorized shop ranked high on my list. Since my plan is to move into a 360/420 spider within the next year or two, I want to make sure my car is as marketable as the next one so I can sell it reasonably quickly. So, I certainly do think about its marketability down the road, as I think many others do. I certainly don't want to pay ridiculous prices to get my service done, but my relative "newness" to the Ferrari world and my relative ineptness to servicing cars myself keeps me far away from doing my own service.

Certainly, if I planned on keeping the car forever I would care much less about FNA-authorized maintenance. Furthermore, if my car was out of warranty I would most definitely seriously consider an independant. But, since my car still has over 2 years left on warranty and I plan to sell before my warranty expires, I want everything to be in proper order to maximize its saleability when I go to sell.

My services (2 so far) have also included FNA service bulletin work, some of which I did not know existed. I still think it is imperative to do these services at the dealer if you have a new car. It's not exactly being "worried" about selling it down the road, but feeling confident in promoting it to a potential buyer with positive consequences (i.e. easier sale and potentially more money).

Nick, obviously if any problems or symptoms arise I will take it to the dealer, same with any warranty work or recalls. I am not arguing with that. All I am saying is that you dont need any specialized equipment or experienced dealer personnel for simple fluid changes and regular maintenance, although the dealer may want you to think so. Yes, its an expensive car - but still just a car. Any good mechanic can deal with this routine work. Now, as I said before, I am taking the car in for the major service because I feel its definitely worth it.

I have difficulting understanding the logic of doing your own servicing on a very expensive car. I recognize some enjoy doing their own maintenance but is it wise?

Dealerships are expensive but so is their equipment, training and wages for skilled mechanic's. They are trained to look for problems which are beyond the expertise of the average owner.

I learned long ago having the right equipment, specialized knowledge and experience is as the commercial states; PRICELESS!

Ernesto- My thoughts exactly. While a car is mine, I do what I want. The next owner can do as he or she wishes. I think there are enough buyers out there with the sense to know that changing the oil and other services that a do- it- yourselfer can handle, will be just fine without paying some dealer for a nonsense service. As you said: "It's just a car".

Well, in the first place, I dont really care about the marketability of my car whenever I decide to put it up for sale. I didnt buy a car to worry about how any action I take will affect its value in the future.

Second, if you pay $1k or $1.75k for an oil and filter, change, brake fluid, coolant, "chassis tightening", and trans fluid, you are crazy. IT IS JUST A CAR. Since when is taking a car to a lube shop a bad thing? There is nothing on the regular service intervals that cant be done outside the dealer. So far, I've done all the maintenance myself according to the Ferrari service manual I purchased (not the owner's manual). If the next owner doesnt like it, too bad. Part of the fun of ownership is doing some of the work yourself, and getting brainwashed into thinking to have to bring it to the dealer is not part of that experience.

Now, the major service I will take it in because the work is a little more involved and time consuming.

I agree, for the "newer" Ferrari under warranty where you want to maximize marketability later on, using a dealer for service is just about mandatory. However, my issue is that my 2002 has 3900 miles and will be on 5000 miles very soon. I was quoted $1750 to get the 5000 mile service done. Ugh....

A 5,000 mile service from a F-dealer includes,Oil
filter, lubrication, brake fluid, coolant flush,
chassis tightening, change trans fluid and a few other assorted things. The service runs about 1000.00.

Ernesto's maintenance history is not typical. Read the owner's manuals for an explanation of 5K and yearly services. Typical F dealer will charge about $1K for those, including not just engine oils but all other fluids. if you're interested in keeping "records" for a future sale of the car, I think it's mandatory. Try to explain to a potential buyer of your F1 360 that you did not think these dealer services were necessary and instead just changed engine oil yourself or went to the local lube shop...

All I have done on my 360 is change the oil and check the level of fluids during the past three years. I have done this every 3,000 miles, costing around $100-$200 each time. It is now 3 years old and its about to have its first major service (all fluids, belts, seals, etc etc) costing around $2,750.

Ok, so apparently during a 5k service the oil is changed and some things are re-tightened. Anybody know what else is done?

The big question, and I guess this varies quite a bit, is what should this service in general cost? Both from an authorized Ferrari service center and from a good independant?

TIA,

Michael
