Very good price.
For a 550 just think of that. The EURO makes almost no more difference in price to the US model.
As I always said, you save a ton the the first years by buying EURO than the price gap shrinks to virtually nothing.

I saw this car there about 2 weeks ago. It's beautiful, and seems like a great price, but I didn't get any details or drive it. I will be at Bob's shop this weekend to have some work done on my car and can look at it for you if you want. Post or e-mail me a list of what you'd like to know and I will try to get answers. I should be able to e-mail Monday, 8/25, with details. Or I can call you from the shop or after I leave if you give me a number in an e-mail or PM. Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks. I'll check on the updates.

I'm also curious about the Euro conversion. In the pics the rear license area looks like the European size, but I can't see where a US plate had been installed.

The cars in Ft. Wayne, anyone nearby who could look at it?

There have been a couple of recalls and these should be documented in the service records. A few dealt with the fuel or exhaust hoses-I don't remember which but the problem was that a leak could develop and lead to a fire. In terms of potential cost, the most serious recall would be the one involving the wheels. A Euro model will not be changed out free from a Ferrari dealer-you'll be responsible for the cost, which could run about $10,000. But you'd still be getting the car for under market. However, if none of the recalls can be documented, I would consider staying away from this deal as who knows what else has been neglected?

That being said, my '97 has had all of the recalls done and is properly maintained. It has proven dependable and is a wonderful ride!

Here's the wheel recall notice:

SafetyAlerts
November 28, 2001
Ferrari Recalls 550 Maranello

Detroit, MI (SafetyAlerts) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published a recall affecting 1997-1999 Ferrari 550 Maranello manufactured between January 1997 - June 1999.

Number Involved: 468

Defect: On certain passenger vehicles, the wheel bolt inserts fitted in the magnesium wheel can show signs of cracking. If the wheel bolt inserts begin to crack, a reduction of the torque applied to the wheel would result. Vehicle handling could be affected, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace all four magnesium wheels with wheels made of aluminum, which are not fitted with inserts. All the wheel bolts will also be replaced because the aluminum wheels require a different type of bolt. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification was to begin during October 2001. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ferrari at 1-201-816-2651.

No, as long as the wheel recall was done. But they had some electrical glitches, some A/C glitches, and some water pump/hose glitches, if I recall correctly. I will look into this further. You may also want to post this on the Tech part of FC.

I had forgotten you were going to Monterey. Can't wait to hear all about it!!!

Dave, we'll be there Saturday, hope to see you, your bride, and your Maranello. Seeing all the 550s and 575s at Monterey really whetted my appetite for one.

What are the shortcomings of a '97? Are the wheels different than the later models?

Mark, it is a 1997 model. That was not a good year for the 550. Being a Euro car doesn't matter, really, as long as it was converted properly, but I would avoid that year, IMO.

Hope to see you Saturday,

Dave

Anybody know anything about this car? http://www.ferrariads.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?search_and_display_db_button=on&db_id=476&query=retrieval

I've been pondering a 550 for some time, and this looks tempting.

If it is out of warranty anyway does being a Euro car really matter?

Any advice appreciated.
