John,
What i find great about some of our roads is one
can get a lot of thrills w/o speeding a lot. One road that is good is 62 west of eureka. you just
have to be careful of oncoming tourists or truckers taking up both lanes going around the hairpins!
i see you are also a 911 fan. Awesome website!

Highway 23 south from Eureke Springs to Ozark Arkansas. Road and track listed it in the top 5 in the U.S. back in the 80's. And I live right on it baby!

Great shot of the Furka pass, Jay...
Brings back happy memmories of doing that fabulous circuit of passes in the middle of Switzerland - Grimsel,Furka,Schollenen and Susten passes all in one crazy loop. Of couse you can always do a brief detour and take in the Nufenen and Klausen passes as well. Most of my laps were on my trusty old Yam FJ1200 - what a great bike!

Another classic is the Mont Ventoux hillclimb route near Carpentras in southern France - one of the old European Hillclimb championship courses. It's just awesome... I last did it aboard a Ducati 900SL and the sound of the V twin reverberating off the rock walls is a great "road trip" memory. While you're down in the South of France don't forget to do the road from Bandol up to Circuit Paul Ricard - probably the best circuit approach there is!

Great to read all the US roads - sadly my US experience so far amounts to a spongy rental car full of family in Florida .... must do better!

US Highway 128, either East (into the Napa Valley) or West (all the way to Mendocino and the Pacific Coast.) one of the best drives on the planet.

US 1 (PCH) up and down the coast a few hundred miles in either direction is pretty cool too.

Lucas Valley Road is fun. So is the run between Larkspur and Indian Valley. Too many to count!

There's a 2 mile "test course" a friend of mine and I use to torture-test our suspensions on a bumpy, and curvy road. Fun because I know it so well, and great to test car's behavior. Hey, those lines are just a sugestion!

For pure terminal velocity, I like to nominate
I-90, starting from the state of Minnisota to the Idaho/Montana border. An Autobahn in our very own back yard.

Another good one in Washington State is the drive to Mt. Baker (which is an active volcano). The drive upto the top is filled with many switch backs (as you can see from one of the pictures) as well as lots of beautiful mountain scenery.

Love the roads nearby Maranello, Italie. Nice twisty roads in the mountains. Also the bigger highways in Germany are good fun (like to one going to the Brennerpas (Austria)...
but I also loved some of the roads already mentioned here...like the ones going to Las Vegas...just drive and don't see anybody for hours :D (drove there with a rental Pontiac GrandAm 3.0...for me a nice car since they don't have them in The Netherlands :-)

There are many fine roads in California but I'm partial to Highway 1. The stretch between Hearst Castle and Monterey is hard to beat but I also like the stretch between Pacifica and Santa Cruz. The "devil's slide" road that goes around the Point in the background of this photo and on towards half moon bay is a road on which you want to be failry precise - lest you end up off the cliff and into the pacific, ha! At night it is quite fun.

I've driven most of the roads in Colorado... paved and unpaved... and love them dearly... Independence Pass from Twin Lakes to Aspen is just one of my many favorites.

But they don't match the Road to Hana on Maui... early in the morning before there's too much traffic. The constant drive to push it on those addicitive twisties is constantly countered by the drive to slow down and take in the amazing scenery. I want to go back to Maui and make that drive every morning before breakfast!

I have to agree with Ryan on New Zealand. The North island has some incredible roads, though I didn't spend much time driving them. I was either lounging or partying in Island Bay or flying to Auckland to do the same... the roads from overhead were beckoning my name and I think I will retire there, travelling where there are good roads outside of NZ or keep So Cal as my base and do the same. :-)

Here's a shot parked along the roadside of Grimsel Pass in Switzerland, looking toward the back side of Furka Pass (i.e. you can see the road carved into the side of the mountain, with lots of switchbacks). You should hear the sound of the Modena's engine echo through the canyon! The sites and sounds are breathtaking!

I'll print this out and will put it into my travel file for future trip planning. Some road magazines have similar articles once in a while (I remember one with Ben Affleck driving a 355 ? on the East Coast) and they're always a good source for fun.

The BEST section is where the speed limit is only determined by
safety equipment on board and some high speed experience....SILVERSTATE..Hgwy 318 about 90
miles of it. Too bad only 1,2 or maybe 3 F cars
are there out of 200 entrants!

Oh, I forgot to mention New Zealand. All of it. I swear there's no road going for more than 100 yards without a twist or turn. Beautiful green mountains/hills on the North island, Alps and plains on the south.

Go the the Bay of Islands, Coromandel, and the alps if you go. Drive anywhere!

Hey Trevi!

You're right, that "tremola" old highway that winds through St. Gotthard is really cool. It's amazing how well the old granite cobblestones have held up over the years. I especially like how the road line-markers were designated using slightly different color of granite. So cool. Do you happen to know how old this section of road might be? I've often wondered when it was built....

The Northern State Parkway West and then coming back East, all the way to the end; the LIE late, late at night; the Southern State Parkway deep west... All late at night when no one's around...

Sweet Briar road lasts about 10 minutes but is a sure thrill for any Ferrari owner; night time only, though... Anyone one near the Suffolk/Nassau border might know what i'm talking about... If not, just ask and i'll tell you where it is... It's residential, though, so it's only good for a late-at-night thrill... Really dark, very twisty...

Suicide Hill was fun on my brother's mountain bike when i was a kid... :-)

-I just did the Gotthard pass in Switzerland (towards Italy) a few weeks ago (the tunnel was under repair). Very fun, wish I had a better car than my friend's Peugeot...

- the road along the water that goes from San Remo, Italy to Monaco

- I miss Kamehameha ("Kam") highway on Oahu (just moved from the windward side a few mos ago after 4 years there - ever been to the Polynesian Cultural Center? That town is where I lived; that little college is my undergrad)

-the main drag in Maranello, passing the factory, Fiorano, and two mean, rumbling Enzos on their pre-delivery break-in runs.

-currently reading the AAA guide trying to find some good New England drives for Fall leaf change...

Definitely the Austrian Grossglockner HochAlpenstrasse. Smooth as silk, plenty of curves and switchbacks, and high Alpine scenery. Plus, since it's a pretty expensive toll road, there's not much traffic to impede the fun. Hit it during off-peak tourist season for maximum enjoyment. Oh yes, and be driving a 360!

many different roads in the alps (Switzerland, Italy, France, Austria). the narrowest and twistiest one i made was "splgen-pass", there is one turn on the italian side, which I really could not make in once, despite of using the full width of the road.
also very beautiful roads are in the black forest, germany.
and sometimes, german highways without speed limits and low traffic such as A81 or A7.

UK - Here in the UK - the best roads I've driven are (a) the road from Betsw-y-coed to Bangor - very straight for half of it and then very twisty (b) A57 Snake Pass. These are all based in NW England as that's where I live.

The 2 can be fun as well, Deer Creek Canyon off PCH, Stunt Road (almost ran this tonight again), Solvang and back roads to Ojai and Filmore. The first and last are definitely long, the other two not so much, Stunt Road being the shortest.

Mine are the entrance to Yosemite Park, Mulholland drive in the hills above LA, Ortega Hwy in Orange County and Angeles Crest Hwy crossing over the Sierra Madre Mountains above LA>, (all roads around So. Cal.) I would appreciate knowing your favorite sections in your area. (The ring around Munich is also fun but I only had a BMW 325 rental at the time, still fun.)
I want to set up a "parade" with the local authorities and I am looking for a fun area.
