Based on milage: you can drive either of these cars and expect to pay* at least $0.40/mile to at most $1.20/mile, based on how many miles you drive, how hard you drive, and your luck with ancilaries. Cheap, they are not; but there's that thing about life being too short....... *gas, oil, tires, brakes, clutch, minor and major service, insurance, and miscelaneous. |

I think these days, the old maxim that "if you have to ask you can't afford it" might need a little bit of adjustment. The modern trend is against lavish stupidity, so that you should know exactly what you are spending on. No applause for people who spend like a fool. But when you get a Ferrari, always budget for the worst case scenario. If the gearbox goes bust, be prepared to put in a new gearbox. If the engine goes bust, be prepared to put in a new engine. If, however, in buying a Ferrari, you have to pray for the best of luck and bank on the hope that nothing serious will go wrong, then I am afraid, my friend, you really can't afford it. Hold off until you can. |

I would attempt to rent one of each for a day. They are soooo different. The 355 is an exercise to get in and out of. It is small and tight. You must be mindful...really mindful...at every speedbump. But I like a smaller tight car. Same with my BMW...I prefer the M3 to the M5. But the roar of a V12 is a heady experience. And it is less "boy racer". With that...my grandfather told me "Never get married just because of good sex. It's a long afternoon" Having said that...if you have the jack...buy a good car right, and you can own one then the other later for a year or two via a hefty admission for depreciation, taxes, and anything that breaks. |

I have never own a V-8. My V-12 is awsome but it ain't cheap McGee. If you have to ask the cost do not get it. It may have some surprises which can set you back a few pennies. Of course the 550 is a little faster than a V-8. As in top speed and being much smoother. |

search the archives for 550 problems - there are a few detailed posts on this topic - one within the past couple months i remember specifically. based on all the data i've seen, and my limited experience, the maintenance costs are roughly equivalent if you do everything by the book. while the 550 doesn't require an engine-out for the major, it's 50% more cylinders which racks up some extra costs, etc. --- so at the end of the day the majors are roughly the same price. Which one would be more enjoyable to own? only you can answer that one! doody. |

I'm looking to purchase a late model (1997+) 355 or 550. What is the typical maintenance on a 550 compared to the 355? Are there any problems to look out for when reviewing a 550? I'm familiar with the typical issues on the 355, but do not have as much knowledge about the 550. Which one would be more enjoyable to own? |
