It was the first time I've also heard about the WSR - I suppose that stands for "World Speed Record" but I'm just guessing.

Also a google search on the web for 550 WSR doesn't turn up much either. I guess the thing to do is to ask FNA and see if they can find out anything from the factory - and get some VIN numbers. I'd be interested too as I have a Blue Pozzi 550 and love it!

VERY interesting read, syd. thank you for the link!

so what is this "WSR"? i always thought they tested a stock car and just put a rollcage in it (more or less).

furthermore, the car in the picture on the card in question (1436/98) is blue, not the silver/gray that the article says all 30 of these "WSR" cars were. of course maybe the car on the card is just a random maranello.

but i've never heard of these WSR cars. certainly i've never seen one for sale.

the FHP and rollbar are no biggie, but this article says they also did some weight reduction, which is news to me; and also means it was not a "stock" car that made the records.

is this article accurate?

There is a Speed Endurance Record car for sale in the uk at the moment but I can't figure out if it was an actual car used in the event or one of a limited number celebrating the run.

www.allfours.org.au/videos

has some good clips, street racing, rally and reviews. Also the first two Stockholm getaways in a decent size. Now THAT was one crazy SOB!

Ack. No engine sounds, just jittery piano music. It felt more "Flight of the Bumblebee" than "Flight of the Valkyries." Could have been a much better video, with only some sound editing... Lambo's website's video of the Murci going 200mph was more interesting just because they left the big flyby 'whoosh'-es.

Ferrari has a 10 Mb video of that run available for download. Here (right click, save target) is a direct link to the video, it that doesn't work go to this page then click on "Events" and "550 Maranello records"

IIRC Lambo broke the records with a Murci a year or two ago.

I remember when that happened. I had a ZR-1 Corvette at the time, and the 550 took the records away from the ZR-1. I loved Ferraris then too, so I had kind of an emotional conflict in that my pride in my ZR-1 was hurt, but yet I was happy that a Ferrari broke the records.

thanks joop!!

do these averages include the driver swap time or is that cut out of the timing? what about refueling and whatnot? did they do 100 miles at 190mph on one set of tires or did they replace the tires at some point during the 100 miles?

i assume this is a highly-banked oval or circular track designed for high-speed testing? is this a honda test track?

thanks!

The 550 Maranello record car was taken right from the factory to prove that Ferrari could produce reliable cars. It broke 3 records:
- 100 kms distance (304.1 km/h)
- 100 miles distance (306.037 km/h)
- 1 hour (296.168 km/h)
The car was driven by the editors of the American car magazine Car and Driver an the Italian magazine Quattroruote

The chassisnumber was 113518

i have a Ferrari card (sorta like a greeting card) 1436/98 celebrating:

October 12th, 1998: Ferrari 550 Maranello breaks three world speed records on the Marysville track, Ohio, USA.

does anyone know specifically what the three records were that were broken and the specifics of the numbers?

i know one of them was a speed endurance record - they went something like 24 hours at an average speed of 180-something (iirc). but i don't know the details, can't find them, and was unaware of the two other records.

tia,
doody.
