Porsches are a great car for everyday driving, I met some Porsche executives a few years back and asked how they felt about Ferrari they stated, "A Porsche is like having a wife and mistress combined, the best of both worlds, a Porsche is a useable exotic that can be driven everyday." |

Speaking of FAST cars. Sept 5-7 I'll be at Watkins Glen with my MK-IV and these 2 other Donohue cars one of which is the fastest race car ever built. (It's not the Ferrari)

David, My brother was involved in a crash with my car. I had lent it to him for the week with disastrous consequences. The car is "totalled". I was considering a GT2 or a Turbo Cab or a regular Turbo again. For all the bashing these cars get, I just keep coming back to them. They are just incredible cars. Its rare to dump a large sum of money in a car and feel good about every aspect of ownership and feel you got a GREAT deal! To prospect of buying a new Ferrari leaves me with a little doubt in the back of my mind. Porsche is easy. It's like an A to B guy buying a Toyota. Cheers |

I love car message boards because we get to argue the same stuff over and over again when we all know there is no right answer. I can tell you the 5k miles in my GT2 were exciting, every single one. It is an amazing car. These new tweaks are total marketing. Less weight, and yet the wheels are still non-hollow -- total anchors as far as I'm concerned. If you want a GT2 find a nice used one, they are dirt cheap, and then do a few mods, starting with the wheels. You will never get tired of driving it. Just be careful. |

Yup Rob, take away mods and driver issues, I cant see anything in the sub $300K production class toughing the GT2. You could perhaps purchase one of the street modified 962s running around out there.... but short of that the GT2 should rule the road. I still think the 360 looks and sounds better. But for me, in those price ranges my choices would be: Buy a Daytona for street driving and get the GT2 for track days! Is it really any big surprise that Porsche builds the better club focused track car? They have more experience in this range/target market and place much more emphasis on it. That doesnt reduce the status or desirability of any Ferrari model at all. Porsche builds wonderful driving cars with brilliant engineering. |

Those stats are BS. For instance, they won't overrev an engine, so if you have to shift at 59 mph, there goes your 0-60 times....Also, G-force does not mean faster on the track, as cornering dynamics are more complicated. I would want to drive each before making a decision...don't pick w/o a good test drive. |

OK, get driver or mod comparisons out of this equation. I picked up a recent R&T and based on 0-60, 1/4 mile, braking, and G's here are the cars in order I would want to drive on the track if my life depended on it. Otherwise I love Ferrari and always want a Ferrari, you can always get something faster. No supercars ($200k+) included... 1) Porsche GT2 2) Lamborghini Murcielago 3) Dodge Viper SRT 4 - tie) Corvette Z06 4 - tie) Ferrari 360 |

Dave and Mark: you guys really made me laugh. Thanks for the mods. Dave, does your question imply that you will be in NYC? If so, would love to meet. As to the "battle" between these cars, i agree with Will H. and Terry that the specs are virtually meaningless, at least when the car is in the hands of a rank amateur without serious track time, like me. And, i also agree that the car doesn't have the overt sex appeal of the ferrari. But, and take this from somebody who loves ferrari, its a truly impressive car to drive. |

Once you accept that competitiveness is mostly down to the driver, you're left with rationalizing your own inability to win all the time, against all cars. I don't like to face hard truths, hence the essential corollary to the rule that driver skill is everything in lower level racing: "Everybody ahead of me is cheating." |

"As for competing or "playing", in club events and an awful lot of amateur racing I think competitiveness is largely down to driver skill - particularly if we're talking about playing at club track day events." I totally agree with this. At P-car track days, its not uncommon to see early low hp 911s on skinny tires blowing the doors off of late model turbos... all because of driver skill.

">>The GT2 can have twice the hp, Id still buy the 360.<< And if you were buying the car to take it to compete at track events?" If the point is that you'd expect the Porsche to cost less to operate in club style, unmodified track use, I agree with you. But I'm still choosing the Stradale for club event use, because I like the car better - completely subjective. As for competing or "playing", in club events and an awful lot of amateur racing I think competitiveness is largely down to driver skill - particularly if we're talking about playing at club track day events. If we're talking about actual wheel to wheel racing, then I think the discussion becomes too complex - what series, what modifications, what rules, etc. |

I also would like a GT 2. I have heard that they are alot more performance car than a X 50 996 Twin Turbo. It is more than just a 2WD and a pony or two more. Supposedly the factory kept the published HP output low. It does not take much to bump the HP. I also like the looks of the car. |

I"ll say this much... you may not like the style, the boring interior, the senile exh. note, nor the fact that it isn't from maranello, but if you ever see a gt2 upclose and personal, in the hands of a good driver, it'll leaving you with a gapping slackjaw. And, it'll do what it does, all day long, and all night long without a single hiccup. B/W the two , I'd take a GT2. ps; there will only be 9 gt2 imported. |

James, are you sure on the F40? I have a tough time seeing the F40 stay with the GT2 around a track. Sure 0-60 and such, but on the racetrack I would lay my wager on the GT2 given equal drivers. Its just a much more modern design relative to suspension and in particular brakes. The Porsche factory has always been ridiculously conservative on both published HP figures and fuel/ignition mapping. Thats how the tuners are able to make such apparently phenomenal gains. An example is the old 993 twin turbo rated at 400hp. I have read actual hp on most cars as delivered was more like 415-420hp. Add to that a chip and minor exhaust change and you get 450-480 and its still just relatively simple bolt on stuff. If you want to drop some coin: add a change in the turbos, wastegate and intercooler.... 750hp. I think the Stradale is a much better looking car and I bet it will sound better as well. But if they were both put in the same showroom stock racing class it would always be foolish to bet against the Porsche. |

The Porsche 911 996 GT2 is actually quicker than all current production street Ferraris except the Enzo. Within the last 20 years, the only two other production street Ferraris that can better its peformance are the F40 and the F50. |

"just read autoweek that p is re issuing gt2 turbo for 04 with less weight and more hp. means trouble for 360cs for sure." I just can't see the GT2 hurting Stradale sales. Sort of understand what you're saying, it's mostly subjective anyway, there are going to be so many choices in this performance range, but I'm one Stradale sale Ferrari isn't going to lose to the GT2. I have trouble believing these cars are bought purely or primarily on specs. I'm a track junkie, and I don't care that much about a few tenths to 60, or 10 mph in top speed. I give looks/style to the Stradale, and I prefer my local Ferrari dealer to my local Porsche dealer. Not knocking the GT2, just a matter of personal preference. Love the cars the Monster Maranello is jumping. Nice touch. |

From what i have been told, the horsepower gains are entirely attributable to remapping of the ECU. The aftermarket already supports a number of respected tuners, and chip makers, whose work brings horsepower levels up to the ridiculous. Apparently, at a certain level, you must make changes to ancillary equipment to carry all this HP. I have resisted "chipping" mine, for now. The interior is still boring, though, and they could chuck the cupholder at the same time they get rid of the radio. By the way, the stock exhaust on the GT-2 is a humongous thing. Changing that, alone, yields significant improvements, not just in weight, but in quicker access to booosSSSTTTTT! |

just read autoweek that p is re issuing gt2 turbo for 04 with less weight and more hp. means trouble for 360cs for sure. performance, maintenance, reliability, dealer network all go to porsche. looks/style only for 360cs. if given to me as a gift with all maintenance and a loaner cs for when in shop then id take cs. if my own $ to use on street and drive to 10 track events/year, then id have to go porsche. |
