Rob wish I could give you the long answer... I simply do not have the time.

In short the fours dominated customer and works team U2 (Under Two-Liter) races as well as selected twisty or short track races with no displacement limits. The twelves were more suited to races at Le Mans, Monza, Spa etc...

So Bill, the 4's seem like the drum brake cars to race today. However, back in the day without all the chicanes added to tracks and the grand touring classics without speed limits wasn't that where the 12's dominated?

When Ferrari pushed the limits and put someone with a light finger on the dyno they stated 315-320bhp at 7000rpm. This is what von Neumann was quoated when he bought his car.

In the real world with stock discplacement, 300bhp is very realistic. What is not shown by these figures is the huge increase these engines have in usable low rpm torque. Having driven and raced nearly all the varients of four and twelve cylinder Testa Rossas, the Monza has them all beat by a mile.

The sole advantage of the 290MM, 290, 315 and 335 Sport models was increased rpm and peak horsepower allowing higher top speed.

Today in practical "drum-brake class" historic racing, tourque at low rpm beats high horsepower top speed every time as long as you skip tracks like Ekhart Lake and Road Atlanta.

Lime Rock, VIR, Summit, Morosso, Laguna etc... are the Monza's killing grounds.

While I am not complaining, the car had plenty of room left in it.

I sold an SI GTO two weeks before the auction to a client. Before acquiring the GTO he asked me to bid on his behalf to $2.5M

The new owner of 0604 would have kept going well past a hammer price of 2.5 had there been anyone else on the car.

Even at that lofty number in the big picture this was one very special car and not likely to come up for sale again.

The two under bidders were both dealers.

There is only one other 860 Monza left in the world and the owner of that one would not part with it for twice what was paid for 0604.

I have now driven both but only 0602 on the track. Hard to compare the two otherwise, however, 0604 has a better history and likely to continue to rise in value if and when sold again.

To give an idea of modern value over time. I sold 0602 in 1995 for $900K. 0604 traded several years ago for $1.4M and with commissions almost $2.1M at Monterey. Nice investment that will out run any other drum brake Ferrari bar none!

PS: The car's days as a road / touring car are over. The new owner is going to race the car hard in the Ferrari / Maserati Shell Series.

I hope to share the track with the new owner in the months and years to come.

0604 looked and sounded great. My friend who bid on it but did not get it took it for a drive on fri before the auction and said it had a lot of grunt. The people who bought it really wanted it and paid up past my friend.

Even better than Ferrari 860 Monza s/n 0604 selling for nearly $2M is that somebody paid over $25,000 for a 1967 Mini Moke!!

thanks for the link. I googled around and found the link to the auction, where the car has been sold. I`m very curious to see the results:

Ferrari 308 GTSi 1980 for $ 42.900,- ??????
(Serious price in Germany would be �uro: 28K

Ford GT 40 MKIII 1971 for $ 250.000,- and not sold????
(so cheap and not sold? Fake?)

Who knows more about this auction/cars?
