I found a rubber plug in a door from my '80 308GTSi marked "Dino". A worker at the factory grabbed from the wrong basket?

I agree they should leave Enzo's office exactly the way he left it, including any papers or pens, pencils he had on his desk etc. , and noone should be allowed in there.

Andreas, i don't see anything wrong with it and i certainly understand that this isn't some unusual practice, i'm just a little confused as to why it was done with Enzo... Office work was not his thing, racing was...

Although, now hold on a sec... If it were a toss up between preserving his office or preserving a racecar, i could definitely see why they would preserve his office- he'd turn over in his grave if they kept a Ferrari from doing what it was intended... Hmmmm... Maybe that's it...

Alan, if I'm not mistaken the engine used in the 308 series cars was based on a Lancia block, not an expanded 6.

BTW DES, it is not unusual to preserve one's office. The Russians did the same thing with Gagarin's office (first human in space) and it is considered good luck to visit the place before going into space.

I believe a replica of Enzo's office is at the Ferrari Galleria in Maranello on permanent display. I took a picture of it, but don't have it here right now.

James, that's the picture I got in Maranello for you. If you send me your address in an email I can send you the poster.

I figured your car would be one of them.

James,

Check with Ken at Ferrariliterature. The picture is from his site and he might have a higher resolution file.

Mr Ferrari's office, as it should, remains as it was on the day he died. I think from your enlargement that that's Vaccarella driving a 512S at the 1970 Targa Florio (He and Giunti finished 3rd) On the opposite wall of Mr. Ferrrai's office is a pic of my car and it's sister's crossing the line in formation at Daytona in 67. (I'll post a copy tomorrow.)

JG, the more i enlarge it, the blurrier it gets... Maybe someone with something more sophisticated that Paint can enlarge and enhance the picture so as to more clearly show the detail...? MarkPDX...? Anyone...? Bueller...?

Then the big question is, where's the original photograph that's posted below and the even bigger question is where's the painting hanging behind Enzo in the picture... Would be pretty cool to unite the picture with the current owner of the car... That's gotta fetch some serious coin...

I've seen this argument forever. They (the Dinos) were built by Ferrari, named after his dead son. Ther're Ferraris. Period.

Rob, I can say that all of the Fiats badged as a Ferrari look, drive, smell and drive like a Ferrari, a legal division of Fiat.

At the shop here we have two gt4s. One is unmolested and bears only the Dino script badge on the hood. Another is equipped with the dealer retrofit which added the Ferrari Rectangle badge surface mounted, no recess, in addition to the recessed Dino on the front, and a Cavillino Rampante horse emblem to the rear valance beside the 308GT4 script badge.
I think the factory learned a marketing lesson on that and the 308GTB was introduced with the rectangle on the front from the start!
The racing V6 engines were always referred to as Dino's after his untimely death. The V8 line inherited the designation as it was based upon the same block architecture, expanded by two cylinders.

206, 246, and GT4 look like a Ferrari, smell like a Ferrari, sound like a Ferrari, drive like a Ferrari, respected as a Ferrari by 99% of everyone. How many FIATs can you say that about? The Ferrari is in it's soul, not the shallow marketing business world of black and white.

One who drags his feet will more often trip.

Ohhhh, I love the Ferrari vs. Dino debate :-)

It seems like we've gone over this a thousand times before.

The GT4's were badged as dino's up until sometime in 1976, when the series 2 cars were introduced. The series 2 cars were badged as ferrari's.

My car is a 1975 series 1.

There was a service bulletin from Ferrari that came out in 1976 calling for an update in the badging, air con, bumpers, etc. The update specs are located at:

http://members.tripod.com/~ferrari308gt4/updates.html

My car has had these updates done, presumably by the dealer. Interestingly, on my car, even the dino 308gt4 script on the trunklid was replaced by a ferrari emblem (not sure by whom).

The cam covers on my engine are marked Ferrari, not dino. I believe on the 246's, they were marked Dino. I don't know if they were changed at some point, or if they are original.

You can search the archives for threads where people posted photos of ferrari and dino badging on these cars.

So if you have an early gt4, do you re-badge it as a dino or leave as is?

I am electing to leave it as is for now. Like ferrari, dino badges are also horribly overpriced. By the time I replace all of the badges on my car, I will have spent over $1000. Additionally, originally the dino badge on the nose was a recessed badge, so I'd have to pay for the body work to replace that particular badge. When you consider that GT4's are barely worth $20,000, it's just not worth it.

In the end, Dino or Ferrari, it's just a car. But a fun one.

I have magazines from 1972 that call the 246 a Ferrari while acknowledging it doesn't say "Ferrari" on it. At the time, no one thought of 'Dino' as anything other than a Ferrari name.

It is my understanding that FNA and Ferrari dealers replaced the Dino badges with Ferrari badges after FNA complained to Ferrari Spa that they couldn't sell the things badged as a Dino. I know if I had one I would want it badged as a Dino and not as a Ferrari.

My understanding is that the last year of production the factory did an about-face and put Ferrari badges on the 308gt4, which they hadn't up until that point. I read that in a book, but can't vouch for the veracity of it.

I have never said that the 308GTS and 308GTB didn't come with a Ferrari badge on it. I did say that the 308GT4 came from the factory with a Dino badge on it, which it did. But then again, my Fiat Boxer came with a Ferrari badge on it too.

Now that Enzo has spoken they will have to be rebadged as Ferrari's if one hopes to score at the better concours.

in the last issue of f1 magazine, there is an article about the experiences of 17 people's first encounter w/ enzo himself.

the quote from paolo martinelli was as follows:
'in 1978 we had been testing a prototype of the 208 turbo when mr ferrari walked into the fiorano garage. i told him we were still a bit concerned about the standing start. 'whats the weight?' he asked. 'about 1240kg', i replied. ' really', he said. 'you tell bellei (tech director) that a FERRARI of 2000cc cannot weigh more than 1200kg'.

so there you have it frank, according to martinelli, enzo called the 208 (308 body style) a ferrari, not a dino.

of course martinelli's memory could be failing but just thought that would be a good one for you to know about.
