Chris,

>>If they're not clear-coated, they will completely degrade within a couple of years due to ultraviolet light.<<

Graphite composites do degrade with heat and uv, but there are ways to treat it so they aren't disposible in a matter of a couple of years. Depends largely on materials you use and also, again, how they are treated.

Chroming a car of polished aluminum finish is illegal, isn't it? The DOT would never let something like that on the road.

I've seen chromed motorcycles that look pretty good, and that Enzo looks good. Just wish that if they're going to do it to a car, they'd have done it with a better looking car :-(

I saw an Azzuro California Blue F50 for sale in the DuPont registry a few issues back.(I THINK it was the July 03 issue)Asking $750,000.00. and theres a Yellow one in the August issue for $795,000. Also, regarding as to "its his car,he can do whatever he wants to it"
Thats right, but,if someone buys the Mona Lisa, does he have the right to paint some Elvis sideburns on it? I guess so,if it's his!... Same thing.

Ryan - here it is.

I heard that a customer in Texas ordered the car and had it painted Azzuro Cal before even picking it up. I'm not sure though.

Well, worse comes to worse they repanel the whole thing. It's not like it won't exist anymore. That said, you'll probably see it in "Dub" magazine soon if they chrome it. He probably got the idea from the game Project Gotham Racing on Xbox, where there's a reflective silver finish you can win for the F50...

Dan - I've heard about the Azzuro CA F50, but never seen pics. My favorite color though.

Better F-50 change: Koenig Twin Turbo (like the videos). A turbo 12 would be scary...

I thought I saw a Jag XJ 220 in chrome once in a mag (demo car); showed off the lines beautifully. Chrome F-50 is too much though... I would have just repainted it Azzuro California :-).

I saw pics of a ford concept once that was entirely chrome (or some other highly polished metal). It actually looked really cool. The photos were shot in a field full of flowers and the reflective surface made the car look almost invisible.

N'din - it's interesting that Zonda left the carbon fiber body panels unfinished. If they're not clear-coated, they will completely degrade within a couple of years due to ultraviolet light. I've seen old race cars and street Ferraris like F-40's with unfinished (no clear-coat) carbon fiber surfaces, even on the inside of the car, which were very yellowed and faded and probably no stronger than cardboard.

Carbon fiber is tough to clear-coat properly. Assuming that Zonda did clear-coat the car, I'd imagine one of the reasons that they won't do it again is the enormous amount of labor that went into finishing it.

His money, his car, why should we judge? Yeah, I'd prefer for someone to save the car and for them not to chrome it (I'm sure Kevin Marcus is pretty happy, one less original F50 which makes his more rare)- but, like Neal said, he'll probably drive it- which is more then most owners.

dont think chrome cars are for me either but cant deny anyone their personal taste and i have more respect for a rapper who would pimp out their fcar than someone who treats it like a rembrant and is too afraid to even drive it. ricer, gangsta, pasta or anyone who enjoys cars in any way is cool by me.

True, you'll be able to pick-up these cars for really, really cheap, once the rappers go the way of the 80's "hair metal bands" (which,by the way,are from my era.) Even played guitar in one,for a little while (local band). Anyway, when you see all these "gangsta rappers" on VH1's "where are they now?' (they'll be asking that about the cars,NOT the rappers) These cars will be in restoration shops all over the country having tons and tons of money being put into them, just to put them back to "original" shape! (or,you'll be able to get an F50 for $99,995.00!)

Hey Dan, seriously, rappers ruin great cars. I guarantee you that any exotic here in Texas that is bling bling belongs to a rapper.

The only rapper that I feel has an authentic appreication for cars is Wyclef Jean. R&B guy who has a McLaren and many other exotics (he hasn't changed them at all).

Evan: why not? I could say the same about country singers who might cover it in lace and hay!

I'll take this opportunity to purchase the car for the $200k it will fetch once finished and unwanted.

For what it is worth those "chromed car components" are not chrome over plastic. They are plastic with aluminum done in a process called vacuum metalizing.

I think they have to spray a metallic primer first, then chrome it. Remember Alesi and even Michael had chromed helmets and now Trulli has it. So it can be done. Plastic can be chromed as done on many chromed car components are plastic.

The most beauiful carbon fibre car that I saw was a Zonda. On a visit to the factory, an owner had just sent the car for service and it was all finished in unpainted carbon fibre. It was so beautiful. We asked the factory if it was difficult to do it, they said there is 20% wastage because all the carbon fibre weave has to be matced and they have to hake a few panels before they can get one perfect one. The factory said they will never build another one, it's too much work. They did that only because it was for the Zonda owner's friend.

well, sure it may be distasteful and all, but it sure would be neat to see once, wouldn't it? It can always be redone, those guys go through cars so quickly, the F50 will wear on him, it will sell for a low price, and someone will fix it - no harm done

They actually did mention that it was a rapper (who would have thought). Black Horse was subbing out the actual chrome work (and didn't seem too thrilled about the chroming idea). (I didn't take any pictures there today.)

It bets the age-old question: WHY?

Hopefully they'll fail in the prospect. Why would Black Horse actually try?

Any pictures of the white 550?

I went by Black Horse motors today and in addition to the 3 or 4 Barchettas, 4 550s (including the White one in the Pharrel (sp?) video), the 360s, 355s, F40 etc., there was an F50 - in the service bay. Upon inquiry I was informed that the car is in there to be completely "chromed"! They are chroming some test panels and may next chrome the entire car. This may or may not happen - awaiting the go ahead after the test panels. Pretty insane - as if the F50 needs to be anymore ostentatious.
