I believe there's a simple general rule for determining this on all F engines:

If you stand at the clutch end of the engine facing the front of the engine, the #1 cylinder is at the uppermost right side, and the cylinders are numbered consecutively around in a "U" shape.

For a specific model it's also shown in the OM under "ignition system componets" (from the '84 US 308QV OM -- which, of course, matches Bob's description):

308

The rear bank is 1-4 from right to left, the front bank is 5-8 from left to right this is looking forward from the rear of the car

I've searched the archives & the net and can't seem to find it. Does anyone know how the cylinders are numbered? (ie. 1~4 on one bank;5~8 on the other)
