I was just at the dealership for this very reason. I checked the oil after 700 miles and it was a bit low. The manual says to check it while it is hot and idling. The dealership says to do it this way as well although they told me they actually turn the engine off and check it immediately. Cap does get very hot so be carefull. I bought two quarts of shell helix ultra for $26. About 3/4 of a quart brought it up to proper level. Hope this helps.

Best thing to do is to take the car to the dealer to add any fluids. You could take the readings if you want but it's very easy to overfill. LIke Brian said, 360s do not consume oil.

36 years ago the guys who designed my MK-IV came up with the best system to check your oil. There is a round site glass in the sump. Look into the sump. If you see oil you're fine, if you don't add a quart or two. (As it holds 25 quarts it sometimes needs 2 quarts) I've never understood why this system isn't used on all cars.
72 years ago the guys who designed my Duesenberg had an even easier system. Open Hood. Look at engine mounted oil level gauge. When it's time for oil change, open lever, oil drains out, close lever, add 12 quarts and motor on.

I strongly advise against this. Strongly.

I strongly advise against this... and the car doesn't really consume they oil... it spews it out all over the engine... making "very messy" the ultimate understatement.

I am sure this works great for Phil... but I strongly advise against it for anyone who might be getting such advise from this forum.

I just had my oil changed at the dealer. They used Mobil 1 15-50. It took 10 quarts @ $6.99 per quart and a new filter @ $26.58

It's actually slightly more accurate to check it IMMEDIATELY after the engine is switched off.

The oil being returned from the cooler into the tank OCCASIONALLY splashes up the dipstick tube, causing an artificially high reading.

When the oil is hot (80 deg c), it's desirable to OVERFILL it by 20-30mm to avoid spikes of surge (360 challenge, in left hand corners on slicks mainly). But be very careful to not go too far as it'll consume itself and get very messy!

The Shell Helix aint a great oil either, it's ok for toodling around in, but a fully synthetic 10w60 (Castrol R is my fave) is better.

Can someone please tell me the proper procedure for accurately checking the oil in a 360 Modena?

Is it: Engine on and hot, parked on a level spot?

Or is it: Engine off and cool, before startup?

Thanks!
