Martin:

Doesn't the "you break it - you bought it" mentality apply here? However, in all fairness, I think the sticker/notice needs to be posted prior to the drive?

That truely is a bummer. Luckily the occupants are ok & no bodily harm.

By the way, you would need to wreck all corners of the car, flood it inside & engine with salt-water, loose every book & record, sand-paper the leather seats, mismatch the tires and claim service isn't necessary in order to sell it on e-bay!!!

WOW!!! High speed, hit a water puddle and the rest is history..........the guy who wrecked it must be sick with guilt...........OUCH!!!

Oh well, you can always sell it on E Bay for double the value!! :-)
( or turn it into a kit car ) LOL

I do not want to give too many details of the accident. It was a "act of God" waterpuddle that caused a spin and impact with a guardrail. Driver and passenger are okay. Damage to the car is substantial.
The driver did have insurance and I persoanally know him for a while and have full confidence in him, otherwise he would not have been offered the car in the first place.

The comical value...well...
in his own words:
"here is another picture for Wrecked Exotics Dot Com" :-)

I am taking this all very much with a smile. Nothing to get worked up with. Everyone is okay that is the main concern and the rest is fibreglass, metal and a broken ego :-)

I unfortunately wrecked a friends car last month.
HIS insurance is dealing with it (I am fully insured), my company has NOTHING to do with it.
Fair or unfair? I don't know.

Yes Martin,

My understanding is when someone gets behind
the wheel of your car, they are responsible.
IF they have insurance.

In some states, the policy covers the car, and in some the driver. It varies. Read your policy provision under "Other Insurance." This is standard provision (statewise) It will answer your question unless vehicles come from other states.

You are assuming he has insurance. You do not need insurance to get a driver's license...you need insurance to register a car...hopefully you got that before the test drive but every test drive that I have been on (F-car or not) the dealer only has asked for my driver's license...if they ask for anything

good luck

Alex and the rest:

Here is the news on how this works:

If you go onto a testdrive or drive anybody's car with their permissison, your insurance actually covers the other parties car. This is not for cars owned by relatives and related parties.
So yes the driver on the testdrive will have to contact his insurance (and we will have to as well) and his insurance will actually pay for our loss.

I had no idea until today that this was the case. So even if you lend your car to a friend and he crashes it, HIS insurance will cover your loss (providing he has Comp and Collission).

Remind me to never go on a test drive with you!

I don't believe that you have any claim against a driver if he crashes your dealer owned car during an authorized test drive. You gave him permission to drive and you are responsible for the car. The bad news is that beyond the damage to the car the customer probably has a claim against you (or your insurer) for any damage or injuries he suffered.

Depends on the policy...
My insurance covers me in any car I drive.

no clue on the first question.

my understanding on the second question is that the dealer's insurance covers everything. of course if it's your fault, i'd expect someone to come after you (justified or not) for damages - either the dealer or their insurance company.

doody.

ps: you're a dealer - why are you asking this?

Hypothetically:
If you borrow a car and that car has only basic insurance but you carry full coverage on your personal car and you crash that basic insured car, would your insurance cover the damage to the basic insured car? (Basic meaning State required insurance)

Any other thoughts on how you can get the insurance to pay for that car?

This is a basic insured Ferrari and your fully insured car is also a Ferrari.

Other question:
If you go on a test drive with a dealer and the dealer covers basic insurance on his plates but you testdrive and crash that car, does your personal insurance cover the dealers car?
