Any car that stands for a long time runs the risks of clutch sticking to the flywheel, shocks seizing, tyres "flat spotting", brakes seizing, oxidisation of mechanical components, hardening of oil seals etc. A regularly used car is always a better buy than a car that has just stood for years.

Hi.......

Check out the attachment for some considerations for a Boxer purchase. Belts can deteriorate due to tension and oxidation, without use. Clutch discs can stick to flywheels after long periods of disuse.

Good luck !!

I traded a 1994 348 Spider even for my 1982 BB512i last December. I had to put in a new clutch($2.5k) and had a 30k service done($6.5K). That service including belts, seals, gaskets, water pump, valve adjustment, engine refinishing and everything else listed in the shop manual. I also had the front bumpers brought back to euro-spec and painted($1.2k) and had the headers and mufflers cermanic coated($450). The car is now like new and I have driven it over 3k miles since March. The BB512i is a great car and a lot of fun to drive. It is an beautiful car that gets attention everywhere I go. Out of the 6 Ferraris I have owned, it is my favorite so far.

I reckon miles are unimportant. We all know how easy it is to doctor the miles, and also how it can actually cost more to maintain low mileage cars anyway.

Condition and history are the most important factors. A good PPI will find this. Also, any car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. No more, no less.

Ed: The odometer/speedometer can be disconnected is just a few seconds!!!!!!! It is a simple disconnect plug under the front of the engine.

With the paint problems, I doubt that this can be a 2,000 mile car!!!!!!

Is this car needing a 30k mile service?
The clutch needed replacing because it was slipping in 3rd and 4th gear.
Stone chips, paint touch up(behind both doors) and lower fascia scrapping seem excessive for a 2kmile garage queen.
Is it possible speedo was disconnected?

If you want me to check my database for history, I would need the last 5 of the VIN. BTW, 2,000 mi is very low for that price.

and further more, factor in a 5 to 6 thousand dollar cam belt job and buy the car. It is a grossly undervalued car in the 12 cylinder class.

My 2 cents worth here: I too have a boxer that is a garage queen. I had to replace the shocks and the clutch a few months ago. My car has 5000 miles on it...and I have owned it from its infancy....true miles. Yes, the clutch rusted and got stuck a couple of times just sitting there. I had trouble with my fuel system, the gasoline gummed up and I had to rebuild one of my FDs and replace both fuel pumps. The car is still not running that smoothly, unfortunately, because I probably should have replaced all the fuel lines etc...but it is getting better. I love the car and I do not have it for sale...but cars that sit deteriorate faster it seems that those that are driven :-(

BTW: A 15,000 mile service does not include a belt change. This service is done with the engine in the car.......adjusting valves.

I mean $45,000!!!!!!!!

I have about 20 pages of service receipts, from 2001 ( I bought the car last july). it seems that the car sat for a while, and he wanted to make it into a Pebbles Beach condition. The car really didn't need anything....it ran fine, but it did sit for a number of years.

Major items where: New belts and tnesioners, engine detailed and painted, new Tubi headers, new Tubi exhaust (the owner supplied the Tubis), polished the cams, new valve guide seals, ALL new seals throughout the engine, new injectors, plugs, wires, rebuilt ignition distributor, cleaned fuel injection distributors, ALL new hoses, and clamps, tires......and the list goes on.

He also replaced all shocks, springs, ball joints and bushings. He had the shocks specially calibrated.

The repair bill for the above came to $25,485. This did not include the cost of the headers, and exhaust. I assume these cost about $7-10K new.

He then had the whole interior removed, and redyed.....to the tune of $10,000.

The $45K did NOT include a "perfect" red exterior paint job!!!!!!

This guy had money, and wanted the car perfect. Why he sold it is none of my business.

People tell me I stole the car, whereas, I believe, that I just got a very good deal.

Henryk,
what was done for $45k? Did you mean $4.5k? Is a belt change part of a 15k mile service?
What would a 30k mile consist of and cost?

I bought an 83 BBi, with 17K miles, recent major service, new suspension, new interior, not a scratch, engine detail, etc.......to the tune of $45K to the previous owner. The car was a perfect "10"......car is red/tan.

I paid $75K.

owner said belts were done at 15k mile service.
i'm a little suspicious of mileage since a cluth was needed. don't have the paper work on it yet.
what would one expect to pay for it?
It also has had some minor paint touch ups.

has it never had its belts changed in nearly 20 years?

clutches can fail from sitting too long? i can imagine certain parts maybe getting rusty (?) or whatnot, but a whole new clutch just from sitting?

do the paperwork and service history bear out the mileage claims?

definitely get a good PPI on it.

the CW is that if you intend to drive it, you'll end up pouring money into it to fix the fact that it's been a garage queen for so long.

fwiw,
doody

It is a 1984 512 bbi.
2000 orig miles.
15k mile service done 3 yrs ago.
Clutch done 2 yrs ago, owner said it was due to sitting so long.
The car has sat in storage a long time w/ such low miles.
Is it time to do a 30k mile service?
What other mechanical/electrcal gremlins might pop up?
TIA
