Just an awesome event. I've been in a few 'rallies' before, but never on closed roads. There were 38 competitive sections over 4 days. Each day starts around 8.30am, and ends around 4pm, with 15min-45min for lunch. The stages varied from 1.5km to 12km. The challenge was to maintain a given average speed. This means that you invariable go as hard as you can at th start of the stage, and then match your speed and time to arrive with zero time penalty. Any stage less than 3 km meant going absolutely flat out, and even then, probably arriving 2-3 sec late. Longer stages were a bit easier. The roads were extremely twisty. There were no pace notes, but there were road books that had the major hazards noted. This is a very controlled and regulated event - governed by the same bodies that run the Australian rounds of the World Rally Champs, so it's no backyard get together, and so, within limits - very safe. The 550 was flawless. The V12 didn't skip a beat, and to hear that engine howl for the 4 days was just sheer music! I'd love to know if there are similar events in the US. |

neat pics, syd! sounds like a really fun event. how did the 550 perform? any problems? what sort of total run times did you have on each of the days? is it like 2-3 hours twice a day (pre and post lunch)? or is it really hardcore stuff? the maps don't have any scale, so it's hard to tell if those are long runs or short runs. are there any LEGAL events like this in the US? doody. |

Just got back from a closed-road tarmac rally around the famous Mt Panorama racetrack in Bathurst, Australia. Here are the pics: http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/sydneylow/ecc/ Having the opportunity to drive a 550 on closed roads, without fear of radar and speeding is truly one of the highlights of Ferrari ownership. This is probably one of the few closed road tarmac rallies that amateurs can participate in. More details of the rally are here: http://www.eastcoastclassic.com/
