Well, make no mistake: I am seriously considering the Stradale. F1 or not.

For me on the track, nothing beats F1. Rick is right, the trend is for all cars from Ferrari and Maserati to be equipped with F1 or Cambicorsa as with Maserati.

I had 6 speed on my ex-355 but F1 on my 360. I prefer the F1. Yes it can be a bit of a bother when you're stuck in traffic and have to inch your way through the jam, but once the road opens up there is no match for F1.

Rick I attended the Advanced Course at Fiorano in June 2002. I loved it. I'm going again with my friends next year.

And why drive such a car if not for the enjoyment?

I'm not debating the "tech" or the efficiency or performance value of the F1. If I raced my car or used it specifically as a track car then the F1 advantage certainly outweighs any "need" for more driver involvement. And I can see Ferrari's point that if the F1 cars have paddle shifting then it makes sense to them that shifting all Ferraris should move in that direction. For me, however, I would like a high performance street car that is, abover all else, a fun car to drive and that means a 6 speed. There's no denying the technology or virtue of the F1 but I would enjoy a manual car more.

Not sure I really understand the dislike for the F1. Nostalgia? I love the traditional manual as much as the next enthusiast, I think, but even entry level race cars increasingly carry sequential gearboxes. I grant that executing downshifts, clutch and shifter, heel and toe, with sufficient smoothness to avoid a spin or even worse engine damage requires more skill than clicking down to the tune of electronically matched revs. Driving the F1, however, now seems to me somehow more "racy," or more evocative of race driving, than does driving the old style shifter, particularly as the paddle shifters improve. The F1 in my 575MM seems a significant improvement from the F1 of my '99 360. I'll always own a traditional shifter, but agree that it's "old tech."

Rick, that's troublesome news... i hope that's not the case... Anyone know how the new 420 and 460 are coming out...? Sticks or paddles or both...?

Rick, i just watched that video a little while ago; very cool, thanks for posting... love it...

when i was in italy two years ago at the advanced ferrari driving course i heard some talk among the staff about F1 versus manual gearbox. although it was just idle conversation the italian staff tends to take the subject of their cars pretty seriously. they casually mentioned that it was possible that in the near future (whatever that means) ferrari may stop offering manual gearboxes and go exclusively with F1 (or newer) technology. their position seemed to be that their roadcars benefit from their experiences in racing and the F1 is the best technology (for now) and the manual gearbox is old tech so why continue this direction? the enzo and stradale i believe only offer the F1...maybe this is the beginning of the end of manual gearboxes? too bad. although i personally love the F1 gearbox i can definitely understand how so many others love manual shifting. enjoy it while you can i guess :-)

Agreed. If it were 6 speed, I would have put in the deposit already. Other than the fact that it's F1 only, it's exactly what I lust for in a sports car. I have a friend who has one on order and he offered it to me but I don't know how long I would enjoy the F1. I will drive it when it gets here in a few months but I have a hard time thinking that there's enough virtue in the rest of the car to make me overlook the transmission. A gated shifter is so awesome and interacting with the gear change is such a fantastic part of driving, I just don't think that I could look forward to driving an F1 each day with the same excitment.

Jay,

I also wish it was a 6 speed, something about the gated shifter that gets me.

what is the redline?

I just wish:

1) the redline was a little higher;
2) it was available with a 6 speed;
3) that I had one parked in my garage.

Then my advice is DO NOT watch any of the tv car review show's in the near future and tape it.
I've already seen one Auto, Motor and Sport TV on my local PBS station a while back and they did a preview/review of the Stadale.
And the exhaust note and engine noise is killer. They shot footage of a Stradale going around Fiorano and later in area that see you regularly has testing area for getting footage Germany.
It was a one lane wooded area which help focus the exhaust note into a loud bark. That send's you into a instant drool mode.

Yours,

Andy K.

i'll make it worse. here's a portion of what a reviewer had to say in the sept issue of car magazine: btw, i traded one of my 360 modenas to my dealer and i'm going to replace it with a stradale!

"boy does the ferrari (stradale) make its own introduction. i'm standing at the top of a pass in the apennine mountains and i hear a mild parping. that's the 360 stradale arriving. the sound gets harder; sharper and louder. but slowly...slowly because it's so far away. eventually the noise is at fever pitch and i figure the car is just rounding the last bend before coming into view. but it doesn't. there are half a dozen more hairpins more to go, and when the 360 does arrive in a blaze of searing sun-blitzed yellow, dogs are barking and birds are falling out of the trees. it's a profoundly life-enhancing sound for sure, but if this exhaust is legal, so's driving at 200mph in the rain on bald tires, talking on a mobile phone to saddam hussein."

Am I the only one? I mean, this morning I get in the 575 and looked down for the little red start button...

It sounds like such an amazing mini-enzo...

Can somebody cure me? Please...
