Dave, it gets easier with practice. Doing it on my E38 740 took about 30 minutes; duplicating it on the E39 took about 10 minutes. :-) Dan: the easiest way to install on a 348/355, IMHO, is to just run the power wire along the top of the windshield trim, down along the right/passenger side a-pillar windshield trim, then down into the passenger footwell, under the carpet, and right to the fusebox. You can use fuse taps (box of 6 from Radio Shack, $.99) and tap an ignition-controlled power source. No cutting, no splicing. My friend Charles Perry and I did it in the 355 in a dark parking garage in Montreal (GP weekend) in about 15 minutes, which included looking for a flashlight. Use a credit card to push the wire under the trim pieces - no need to remove them! If the 550 has the fusebox in the passenger footwell, there is no reason why this wouldn't work there either. If you do loosen the windshield trim near the rear view mirror, tie a knot in the wire where it exits (and goes to the V1) before reinstalling the trim piece; this will keep the wire from pulling out if your suction cups fail one day and the V1 falls. vty, --Dennis

Dennis, Thanks, got me motivated to surf the net a bit more and found a website that shows the install of a V1 in a E39 540i just like mine. Took 30 minutes, and looks great; just did it tonight. Dave

Ok, this topic comes up all the time. I'm including a bunch of links for how to install a Valentine 1 (V1) radar detector in your Ferrari. These links are from a BMW site, but if you check out the links, you CAN figure out how to hardwire a V1 in your car. A friend and I did it in my 355 and 348 in less than 10 minutes each. These also have links for surreptitious mounting. vty, --Dennis BMW V1 Install Ideas Jim Powell's "InV1si Mirror" rearview mirror mounting for the concealed display: http://apexcone.com/Radar/RadarLove.html James McIver's stealth V1 install in the third-brake light housing in an E36 M3: http://www.vb.quik.com/jmciver/pages/v1.html Jason's stealth V1 install in a visor-mounted CaseLogic CD case and ashtray remote. http://www.540i6.com/jasonsv1.html Another BMW install: http://www.kindel.com/bmw/valone.htm V1 Installs for Other Vehicles Audi S4: http://www.sanders-stuff.com/Cars/Guides/V1_Install/v1_install.html Corvette: http://www.c5tech.com/mods_v1.htm Honda ST1100 (bike): http://www.st1100.org/farkles/whitbrown.html Honda/Acura/NSX: http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/DIY/detectorinstall.htm Porsche: http://boxsters.addr.com/hacks/stealth_v1.htm http://www.kindel.com/porsche/valone.htm http://www.whiteson.org/boxster/mods/v1.shtml http://www.industryfigure.com/berkeley/Porsche/Accessories/valentine.htm
