Shown 135 (there's another gear to go in the pic ;0) RPM indicated once. Took a while to get there. Car's only supposed to do ~120 aero limited too.

Of course, none of this was on public roads, and I'll deny it, hey, look over here!

Hah the fastest I have gone in my own car is 105 :-) You cant get a 99 6 cyl. Mustang much faster than that! That and there are no roads nearby to do it safely...I have done 140 in a Ferrari though and about 130 in a Jag XJ6.

I did 145 in a 93 Mustang LX 5.0 with a fairly hopped up engine. Held that speed for about 45 minutes on the way home from Vegas about 5 years ago. At Baker, I pulled over to check the engine, just to be confident that it looked ok. One of my Ford Racing plug wires (not cheap) had been sitting on one of the HOT HOT HOT BBK headers during the screaming ride and was half fried. Oops!

It was fun, though! No shakes, rattles, or rolls.

Gone 165 in my TR, not enough balls to go any faster. That's enough for me and not worth taking a chance. I just wanted to see what the car would do. Way too many things could happen, tire blow-out, pot holes, ticket, license taken away, wreck, killed.

were you using your legs to steer as you took the pic? Is that why it is out of focus? You just did not spend enough time focusing the camera.

When I used to live in Tahoe I used to take the Countach down through the valley where there was a straight road for like 3 miles. I could see 185 mph on a day with no wind & that was Vmax on the Countach. No idea what speed it really was but it was Seriously Fast!!!!! :-)

THEORY OF RADAR (AND OTHER) RELATIVITY:

The angle of the dangle is directly proportional to the heat of the meat if, and ONLY if, the sum of the cum equals the mass of the a$$ AND the sum of the cum remains constant.

Mike,

Highly unlikely. What you have to realize is that the cop was using a hairdryer style radar gun. Given a policeman's a) ability to accurately guage speed on their own (something they are 'qualified' to do) and b) ability to focus on said object to clock, my own suggestion is that he was clocking the snail caught up in the wind draft from under the speeding Maranello. Said snail was unhappily detached, found himself in the way of some radio waves at the moment of 'clocking' and was discovered to be travelling a speed of 06mph. Given the coefficient of adhesion of a snail to the road, aerodynamics of the 550, airflow characteristics, and making certain conditional assumptions, I would say we can safely assume the car was travelling at approxametly 10006 mph, slowed only by the fact that the earth had spun backward so fast that it launched him into the air as well, preventing further speed gains.

... maybe it was 1006mph?

Hopefully a few fellow f-chatters will be there. What part of town are you in and do you ever go to Crystal Cove. And very nice looking 550! When did you get it? How do you like it?

Did the 180 on I15 past State line going and just past returning. I do not own a radar device. No rock chips ..lite early A.M. traffic..
I15 north of Victorville is under construction on and off past Baker. NEVER go fast on patchy pavement.PLace the dotted white line under the middle of your car. At the end of your top-speed section, decellerate well before coming up on the traffic in front of you .NEVER blow by (pass/overtake) a car faster than 15-20 mph.At your max speed do not but glance for a millesecond at the speedo or tach...if you have a passenger -have them read off the numbers to you. Always look far down the road.
Do a safety check before a speed run...at least check tire pressure. Never go mach speed unless your tires are newish(2 years old max)
Bad things happen to nice people. I was a sucessful race car driver for 16 years during which time I saw alot of bad stuff.
A 550 is a seriously fast machine. 150-200 mph on public roads is a serious undertaking.
Safety MUST always be #1.
Be safe.

I had mine up to 191. It felt like 100. The bad part was that I ran out of space. It was at around 5800 rpm. and pulling!! 200 was doable for sure.

On another "Pleasure cruise" we got from the entrance of Laguna Seca Raceway to La Superica in Santa Barbara in 1 hour 26 minutes. What can I say, we were hungry.

And yest it was strange. The strangest thing of all was seeing NO airplanes...and, while driving up & down PCH, seeing US warships doing picket duty patrols right off the beach. Very spooky, very sad for our country.

Bart - I grew up in Victorville (OK no jokes)so I know the fun certainly doesn't start there. :-) How long does it take you to get to Vegas from O.C.? And does your car overheat - that has to be one of the hottest stretches of highway around? I used to see the occassional cop after Baker - but rare. I guess now I could just outrun them to the State Line. (By the way does that work or can they pursue you beyond that - if in hot pursuit? Just wondering - I actually would not do that)

Dave - you have a deal. Next time you are in LA I will chauffer you around (or vice versa) in my car. My 40th is a two months away - so some 550 tips would be a nice present!

My home is in SF and my Porsche is there. My main office is in LA and I have a girlfriend in Beverly Hills where the 550 also lives. I may move it up to SF to alleviate the withdrawals I have when I return to SF.

I am in LA about 10 days a month.

P.S. That must have been a strange time to be on the road - immediately post 9/11

Mike, the trip on which I saw 170 was 2 years ago, exactly. You see, 9/10/01 was my 40th birthday, and on 9/7 we drove from Austin to Tucson, spent a few days there, and then on 9/9 drove to Aviara/San Diego to spend my birthday with family & friends before going up PCH to Carmel, staying, and then heading home. The birthday was great, but obviously the next day sucked for our entire country. We continued on with our trip as planned, seeing empty hotel & resorts the whole way. Anyway, I saw 170 in New Mexico or Arizona on our first day, IIRC.

Now, I get to SoCal occasionally on business--perhaps more in the near future. Where do you live there? Perhaps we could hook up on my next trip.

I drive to Las Vegas often on Thunder Road (I-15). If you leave early in the morning, the CHP are still sleeping. After Barstow, the fun begins. After Barker it is ZOOM.

Just be careful and do not over drive your abilities.

I have given up worrying about rock chips. I have so many it looks like a shotgun hit my front end.

You are right about the noise level in a 550. Very quite. I do drive with the window open and I still find it nice.

See you in Vegas. Just please don't try to pass me on Thunder Road.

Its cool when you take a car up to a high speed and the only thing that really is different is how long it takes to slow down. On the other hand, several years ago in high school I had, we'll say a non-high-perf car. The car started to revolt over 75MPH. At 85, the dash vibrated so much you couldn't see its edges. Thank you, Pontiac.

Dave - do you ever get out to SoCal? Would love to pick your brain about the 550 / driving tips (e.g best first school, etc). Just got mine and don't know how to drive it and what to add - e.g. stereo upgrade, tape vs. speed lingerie.

Although I am learning. Just ordered the Valentine one today, installed the fuchs exhaust out of the gate, floor mats ordered.

I like the occassional adrenaline boost from a good 125 plus run (in the 996) and absolutely cannot wait to get more drive time (some at speed) in the 550.

Leonard - welcome to the board.

Tell me more!! What roads were you on? Radar on? I am jealous.

Did you get any rock chips? Do you have tape or bra for those high speed outings?

Was it all in at 180 or did you have more left?

I have not yet had the chance to go over 80 mph in my 2000 550. Got it a month ago. Drove it a few days and went out of town for a month. Will be back behind the wheel next Wed and can't wait. I will go to Crystal Cove with it on the 20th - perhaps some other F-chatters will be there.

I have a business meeting in Vegas at the end of the month and was thinking of driving from LA.

Yesterday I drove to a business meeting in Nevada. First time in the year I've owned my 2000 550 that I was in a place to safely stretch its legs.
So the question was answered...What is the difference between 180 and ...say...120 ? Answer...not much other than a little more engine noise due to higher RPM. Certainly no more wind noise(still zero). Same superb stability/tracking.
It does take a while to slow the car down from this high a speed so it is always best to be prudent in backing off long before coming up behind traffic traveling in your direction.
As always, the 550 exceeds my expectations. It is amazing.
