I don't think Ferraris have their engines running at much higher temperatures. They have typical coolant thermostats in them set at typical temperatures. Their oil temperature is the same as with other vehicles. The problem is that everything is crammed in the rear of the car, including gas tanks. The exhausts on my 328 are very close to the gas tanks. When it comes to a head on collision, I prefer my engine up front. Headers away from gas tanks reduces the chance of a fire. |

As Ferraris have their engines running at a much higher temperature than most cars, could this result in an increased risk of fire? |

Bottom-line: ANYTHING can happen! Front engine cars are IMO more dangerous, because the engine is in front, and more likely to be either pushed into the cabin, or fuel lines easially sliced. Mid-engein car is actually pretty well protected, and aluminum actually dosen't spark when it contacts the road at speed (UNLIKE STEEL!) so the 360 will have LESS chance of catching fire. That said, CARRY AN EXTINGUISHER, better is a pull-fire system as fited to all race cars. And, if you are in an accident, TURN OFF THE IGNITION INSTANTLY, before you even try to move (racers instinct to do this.) this shuts off the fuel pump. Best! Ben.

gee, i guess if one were going to do a high speed run or some other chancy type thing, might be a good idea to do it on an almost empty tank, righto ? Hard to burn if there's nuthin' left in the tank... |

A customer of mine had a 1996 993tt. He was hit in the right rear corner. The car burst into flames. The impact of the car severd the lines at the fuel filter. The car was running and the fuel gushing out of the broken line ignited on the hot engine almost instantly. The fuel pump was still running so the fire just kept getting bigger. I have pics of the car somewere. Point is all cars can catch fire if hit in the right/wrong spot. Be careful out there folks...It's a war zone!! |

I wonder if it is safer to have the fuel tank in the front of a rear/mid engine car ? Although not based on any statistics I know of, it seems to me that crashed 996's almost never catch fire. There are a lot fewer mid-engine F-cars and I have seen and heard of many fires. |

John, Rear end would hit probably be okay, I don't know on the 360 but the 355 series down and mid engine V12s have the fuel tanks inches from the front of the rear tires and quarter panels, a 15mph impact there would easily rupture them. |

jeff, i think ur being a bit dramtic. i don't think a 360 is 'easy' to burn at all. go to wreckedexotics.com. there are all sorts of 360's with heavy damage to rear that did not catch fire. i would guess that only a very small percentage of 360's catch fire upon rear end impact.

All mid engine Ferraris seem to burn easy, there is a lot than can happen since the fuel lines run around the rear engine compartment as well as 2 fuel tanks within inches of hot parts. A strong enough impact anywhere can sever fuel lines spilling all over a hot engine = instant fire, even worse a hit in front of either rear wheels will rupture the tanks and you have an instant fireball hopefully you the car has stopped enough and you are still with your senses you could get out depending on how strong the fire is. My advice, don't crash |

Wait a second, I am not out serching for crash pictures, I am serching for information. For example if you get in a crash involving the rear quarter panel just how long do you have to get out of the car. Do they explode, what. Would be nice to not these things. |

After seeing a crashed Ferrari myself I must say I rather sit in a Ferrari than a Kia. It holds up pretty well and surely if it goes up in smoke..... As I have been saying SO OFTEN! You should carry a fire bottle in every car you drive. Just so you can help others. Not for your own protection in most cases but for the protection of others. If everybody would you would be safer even if your car catches fire.

Rob, I wish you would put half of the amount of effort in to finding Ferrari Bikini pictures as you do accident photos. |

I KNOW THIS IS A HOT TOPIC, BUT I HAVE A 360, AND IT SEEMS WHEN A 360 CRASHES A FIRE FOLLOWS. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SOME OF THESE PICTURES POSTED FOR EDUCATIONAL REASONS, AND SOME SUGESTIONS OF FIRE PREVENTIONS SYSTEMS. ROB KLEIN |
