Made post year later because I didn't think it was "postworthy" until I read some stuff on the European section this morning (about passing through radar beams on the roads in Switzerland). And it's not necessarily a story that I'm "proud" of... let's face it, doing that kind of speed in a tunnel ain't exactly very smart! |

Jay... That is a great story. You should send that to Forza for sure! This, along with DES's story would be great drivers' journals!! |

I just posted this story on the European section... but thought I better post it here too in case any of you miss it. It's a fun little story of something that happened to me last year while driving through Bavaria.... Last year when I was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, I discovered they had a beautiful long tunnel. So I dropped off my friend with his video camera in the tunnel (mistake number one!!) and then drove through the tunnel REALLY fast in my rented Ferrari 360 Modena (mistake number two!!). I accelerated all the way through the tunnel, and was doing about 240 km/h when I exited. Of course the sound of the engine echoing through this long tunnel as I accelerated all the way through was just incredible... When I went back into the tunnel to pickup my friend with the video camera, he was GONE! I stopped and looked everywhere for him. He was nowhere to be found. So I was really worried. I thought maybe someone thought he had a problem and picked him up and took him back to the hotel, so I drove back to the hotel Sonnenbichl to look for him. When I walked in, the receptionist told me that the Police had called, and had arrested my friend. Additionally, they instructed me to drive to the police station, IN THE FERRARI, so they could talk to me!! I was afraid of being arrested and having the Ferrari impounded, so instead of driving to the Police, I took a cab. I also took lots of cash, in case I had to bail out my friend and/or pay for my fine. When I arrived at the police, I told them who I was. They invited me in to speak with the Police Sargent, and we sat down at his desk. He looked very serious and I thought I was in some serious deep sh*t. He then proceeded to point to a black and white video monitor on his wall, which is a closed circuit surveilance camera mounted inside the tunnel! Then he hit a play button, and I got to watch myself speeding through the tunnel. After that, he pulled out my friend's video camera, and played the video my friend took of me passing through the tunnel. He could hear the audio, and he counted gears, and noted that most Ferraris are doing close to 250 km/h when they shift out of fourth gear at redline. Unfortunately, he was correct. Then he asked, "Where is the car?" I told him that I had taken a cab, since I was not sure where to find the police station, and I knew the cab driver would know where to find the police. He then got a big smile on his face, and said "Oh no!!!! I wanted a ride!" It turns out the reason he wanted me to come to see him, and the reason he held my friend as a "hostage" until I got there is because he had always wanted a ride in a Ferrari! As most of you probably know, Garmisch is a pretty quiet little town, and my driving the Ferrari through the tunnel at high speed was the most excitement they had seen for a long time! Then all the officers came into his office, and started laughing, calling me "Michael Schumacher" and "Schumi", and they brought my friend into the office with a big smile on his face. Then I could breathe a sigh of relief! So we sat there, and they said, "Well, we are going to have to issue you a ticket for SOMETHING." So they got out their law book, and paged through it a bit, and wrote us a ticket for 13 (thirteen) Euro for violating the "no-pedestrian in the tunnel" law! By this time it was getting late (after 23.00), so they made me promise that the next time I drive through Garmisch in a Ferrari, I would stop and give them all a ride. Next week I plan to drive to Garmisch, and I will stop at the police station to see if any of my old friends are still there! So, it seems their bark was much worse than their bite. Boy was I scared at first! |
